Could Geraldo Rivera's new career as a syndicated radio talk show host come to an early end? Quite possibly if he actually becomes a political candidate. Rivera, also a commentator for the Fox News Channel, says he's considering seeking the Republican nomination for a U.S. Senate seat from New Jersey. Grabbing a lot of news media attention, Rivera told his audience on his Cumulus-distributed radio show, "Fasten your seatbelt. I am and have been in touch with some people in the Republican Party in New Jersey. I am truly contemplating running for Senate against Frank Lautenberg or Cory Booker in New Jersey." Lautenberg is the incumbent but is expected to be challenged in a primary by Booker, currently the mayor of Newark. Booker could get the Democratic nomination without a challenge if Lautenberg decides not to run again. Lautenberg has not yet said whether he'll seek another term. During his on-air announcement of a possible political run, Rivera added, "I figure at my age, if I'm going to do it, I gotta do it." But would he really do it? Or could this be just an attempt to gain additional media attention? His radio show is based at Cumulus Media’s WABC-AM, New York, where it began as a local show. Rivera did not directly address when he would quit his radio and TV jobs if he became a candidate, but in an interview he suggested Cumulus Media and Fox News might have something to say about his political prospects.
