Atlanta's former "98.9 The Bone" is now "98.9 The Walk" with a "family-safe" Country format on FM translator W255CJ. The translator's signal originates on the HD2 multicast channel of WWWQ-FM. The new format debuts following the merging of programming of the two Cumulus Atlanta Rock stations on "Rock 100.5" WNNX-FM. That was simulcast through the weekend. Cumulus, telling us they prefer to call the format "Uplifting Country" rather than "Christian Country," describes "The Walk" as: "Targeting those individuals who love a special kind of Country music, people whose family values are strong, and those who are tired of being offended by what they hear on their radio. The Walk is exactly that -- a radio station for people who want to hear their favorite songs, without anything that’s inappropriate or embarrassing. We're perfect to listen to when you want to escape all of the negativity in the world. No silly or inappropriate DJ talk and music that's safe to listen to no matter where you are and no matter when you listen." The new format is online at 989TheWalk.com. In our previous report on the Friday Rock merger, we noted that "There is speculation that the new format on 98.9 will be something using the name '98.9 The Walk' based on domain registrations, but exactly what format that might indicate remains a mystery to most speculators."
On the new website, visitors are told the station is "Positive, Uplifting Radio," adding: "Our station features a place where listeners can hear a different side of their favorite Country artists like Carrie Underwood, Rascal Flatts, Tim McGraw and Kenny Chesney as well provides a new home for contemporary artists such as Michael W. Smith, Third Day, Amy Grant and Steven Curtis Chapman. 98.9 THE WALK will be family friendly environment with a strong sense of community. The focus of the station is music. It is safe to listen to with your family no matter where you are and when you listen!"
