Steve Harvey and Clear Channel Sign New Long-Term Contract

Clear Channel Media and Entertainment announces an exclusive long-term agreement with radio personality, comedian, television host and best-selling author Steve Harvey to renew and expand his relationship with the company. Under the five-year agreement, Harvey will continue his current role as host of The Steve Harvey Morning Show, which is syndicated nationally by Premiere Networks on nearly 70 radio stations in the U.S., reaching approximately six million weekly listeners. Additionally, Harvey will work on a variety of joint ventures including the international expansion of the radio show, development and creation of new programming and promotions, community and charitable events, as well as multimedia projects and events. He will also serve as a spokesperson for the company. "Steve is an unrivaled talent with success across multiple media platforms and we are thrilled to expand our partnership with him and collaborate on new opportunities to further drive business growth," says Clear Channel Media and Entertainment Chairman and CEO John Hogan. "As the leading media company in America, we continue to deliver the most relevant content and top personalities to diverse audiences across the country and Steve is a remarkable talent and incredible asset for Clear Channel Media and Entertainment." Today, it's the number-one syndicated morning show in the top 25 metro markets with Persons 12+, Adults 25-54, Adults 18-34, Adults 18-49 and Women 25-54 (Source: Arbitron, FA'12, MSA, Exact Times, AQH T 25 Metros). NABEF Accepting Celebration of Service to America Awards Entries

The National Association of Broadcasters Education Foundation (NABEF) announces that entries are being sought for the 2013 Celebration of Service to America Awards, recognizing outstanding community service by local broadcasters. Winners will be honored at the Celebration of Service to America dinner held June 3, at the Washington Convention Center. Categories for the Service to America Awards include: Service to America Community Awards for Radio and Television, honoring broadcasters for individual campaigns, projects or programs that serve the public good or otherwise provide exemplary service to their local communities. Service to Children Awards for Radio and Television, recognizing broadcasters for outstanding programs, campaigns and public service announcements that serve the children of their communities. Service to America Television Award, acknowledging a television station for the totality of its efforts and commitment to excellence in serving its community. Ford Developer Program Wins CES 'Best In Show'

Engadget has released its "Best In Show" awards for the 2013 CES, and the Ford AppLink Developer Program has won the "Best In Automotive" award. The program allows any mobile app to interface with voice commands in the SYNC AppLink system and is especially important to the radio industry. The Ford program's House Developer is Jacobs Media's jacAPPS. "Despite literally millions of gadgets and concepts at CES, the Ford program stands out because it levels the playing field for all apps, especially for radio stations," says jacAPPS President Paul Jacobs. "It is exciting that Engadget recognized Ford’s innovative AppLink program, allowing any radio station to have a strong presence in its SYNC enabled vehicles." At the 2013 CES, jacAPPS unveiled sixteen iPhone and Android apps for Greater Media radio stations.




Mike O'Meara Back on DC Radio

Mike O'Meara is back on the air in the Washington DC market, now at Talk WTNT-AM, and FM translator W275BO, airing weeknights 7-9pm. O'Meara and Don Geronimo gained popularity in the market with an extended run on the DC market's WJFK-FM from 1991-2008, which also had been syndicated by Westwood One. In 2009 O'Meara started a podcast with the "Don and Mike" crew of Robb Spewak, Buzz Burbank, and Oscar Santana, which continues and is available to terrestrial radio stations. O'Meara had joined Kirk McEwen for mornings on "105.9 The Edge" WVRX-FM in July 2010, but that show ended a little over a year later when the station, now Talk WMAL-FM, flipped formats. O'Meara's current "Mike O'Meara Show" airing on WTNT-AM fills the former Michael Savage slot. It's underwritten by longtime show sponsor Oncor Insurance. The show, which remains a daily podcast, is described by its website as "a fun mash-up of real life, pop-culture, news of the day, dynamic audio clips, and four guys busting each others' balls." It began airing on WTNT this week.




Chicago's WGN-AM Signs Extension with Blackhawks

WGN-AM, Chicago, and the Chicago Blackhawks have agreed to a five-year broadcast rights extension. The agreement will keep Blackhawks hockey on WGN-AM, through the conclusion of the 2018-19 National Hockey League season. WGN-AM has been the flagship station for the Blackhawks since the start of the 2008-09 season. "The Chicago Blackhawks and WGN Radio have forged a special relationship since the partnership began in 2008 and we are proud and honored to be able grow that even further thanks to today's great news," says Blackhawks President and CEO John McDonough. "WGN Radio has broadcasted countless memories and hallmark moments for our organization and fans over the past few years and we are excited for what the future holds. We thank everyone at station for their tremendous support." WGN Radio DOS/Interim General Manager Jeff Hill tells us, "We are proud to extend our relationship with the Blackhawks and bring the excitement of hockey play-by-play to our listeners. The fast pace of the broadcasts provide an incomparable energy and we look forward to delivering the best hockey broadcasts for the next six years."




TRN Adding New Weekend Programs

Talk Radio Network announces that it is adding seven new weekend shows. The shows, launching the weekend of January 19-20, include "Making America Laugh with Louie Anderson" and "Nutzz and Knight Radio," hosted by Gordon "Lug Nutzz" Stewart and actor Christopher Knight. Says TRN CEO Mark Masters, "We are completely focused on helping our affiliated stations make more money. Weekend programming is a place where our affiliate's local salespeople can 'incubate' new local advertisers inside high quality 'niche programs, and when those work, they can move those happy clients into the M-F buy. These programs fit that strategy perfectly for our affiliates." The new TRN weekend offerings also include "All Action Sports Radio" and "The Brian Oxman Show." AWMF Names Caroline Beasley Honorary Trustee

The Alliance for Women in Media Foundation announces its newest Honorary Trustee, Caroline Beasley, currently EVP/CFO for Beasley Broadcast Group. AWMF tells us, "With a respect for tradition and a talent for business and finance, Beasley has played a major role in shaping the radio company founded in 1961 by her father, Chairman/CEO George G. Beasley." She says, "This is an incredible honor for me. I'm grateful to the Alliance for Women in Media Foundation for the invitation to join such a distinguished group of broadcasting and entertainment professionals. AWM plays a vitally important role in advocating and advancing women in media; I admire their past contributions and accomplishments and very much look forward to helping them ensure that this important mission and message resonates well into the future." Beasley joined the company in 1983, holding various finance positions at both the station and corporate level prior to being named VP/CFO in 1994. In 2005, she was promoted to Executive VP and in this expanded role oversees all corporate finance activities, including financial analysis related to the company's acquisitions, divestitures and swaps of radio stations, as well as the company's credit and investment banking relationships.
