Cox Media Launches 'Power 106.1' in Jacksonville

Cox Media launches "Power 106.1" in Jacksonville, Florida, on translator W291CI, billed as "Where Hip Hop Lives." The new "Power" replaces Soft AC "106.1 The Dove," which many had said was only a "teaser" or stunt format. "The Dove" at first was a simulcast of Cox's WDUV-FM, Tampa, but the Jacksonville 106.1 version of it soon became, we've been told, only a loop of music from the WDUV-FM format. The new Hip Hop format is launched under Operations Director Todd Shannon, with 10,000 songs in a row commercial-free. The 106.1 translator is being fed by WJGL-FM's HD2 multicast channel at 96.9 FM. Reports from the market say Cox is attempting to oust Clear Channel’s "93.3 The Beat" WJBT-FM from the top spot in market ratings, even though Cox knows "Power" can not beat "The Beat," but they are hoping it can hurt its ratings to help the full power Cox stations better compete. The new "Power 106.1" is online at www.Power1061.com. The 106.1 FM translator is being used by Cox under a deal with its owner, Victor Vickers. That translator operates with 225 watts.

More Bull! – Houston's KILT-FM Flips to New Country 'The Bull @ 100.3'

CBS Radio Country KILT-FM, Houston, flips to New Country "The Bull @ 100.3" combining the heritage KILT call letters with Country music from artists including Jason Aldean, Carrie Underwood, Luke Bryan, Hunter Hayes, Eric Church, Zac Brown Band, Florida Georgia Line, Taylor Swift, and Kenny Chesney, among others. The new format is said to be "The Next Generation of Country” and targets a younger audience than the usual Country format. Beginning January 14, the new lineup will include "Foley and Thunder" 5:30-9am, followed by Erin Austin 9am-2pm, Keola 2-7pm, and Zakk 7pm-midnight. Says KILT-FM Program Director Mark Adams, "The Bull is all about presenting what's hot in country music from artists that are leading the charts across the country – and we'll do it in a fun and edgy way that reflects the contemporary lifestyle of today's country music fan. We'll also provide an enhanced live, local and interactive experience that will enable us to connect with listeners in a way we've never done before. It's going to be an exciting ride." We're told the new "Bull" will continue the anticipated Cook Off at The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, as well as sponsor this year's Carnival. The Bull will also adopt many of 100.3's promotions and events including "Girls With Guitars" and "The 14th Annual Ten Man Jam" happening in December of this year. SVP and Market Manager Sarah Frazier tells us, "The Bull is about bringing the spirit of the city to the airwaves. As much as the station is about the music, it will be equally about Houston, and the great state of Texas, which we are all proud to be a part of."

Alpha Country KUPL-FM/Portland Rebrands as '98.7 The Bull'

Alpha Broadcasting New Country KUPL-FM, Portland, Oregon, rebrands as "98.7 The Bull" rebooting with 10,000 songs commercial free. It's more than just a rebranding. The music is being fine-tuned, and the station revamps its on-air host lineup. Morning hosts Scott Simon and Jolynn Winter are out, as is midday host Lola. Night host Danny Dwyer remains with the Alpha Portland cluster, but in an off-air position. Afternoon host B-Dub will return after the 10,000 songs in a row conclude. Alpha is reportedly seeking CHR style hosts to fill the vacated dayparts. All of this is aimed at boosting KUPL-FM's ratings, according to sources inside the cluster. Ratings have recently improved as KUPL-FM increasingly sought to appeal to a younger Country audience. In the October 2012 Arbitron PPM. KUPL-FM had trailed crosstown Entercom Country "99.5 The Wolf" KWJJ-FM, but in December Alpha's Country station had taken a lead over KWJJ-FM, and KUPL-FM was ranked fourth overall in the Portland market. Alpha Broadcasting Director of Programming Scott Mahalick gives us the "official" word on the relaunch. "Rebranding KUPL to The New 98-7 The Bull is part of our evolution growth plan to dominate all the demos in the Portland Country life group." Now it will be "The Bull" -- online at /www.987TheBull.com versus "The Wolf."
