Clear Channel and Fleetwood Mac Sign Revenue-Sharing Agreement
Clear Channel Media and Entertainment and Fleetwood Mac today announced a "landmark agreement" -- the first direct performing rights partnership between a radio company and an artist -- that will enable the group to receive revenue from airplay on Clear Channel's digital and broadcast radio platforms. The group's new EP, Extended Play, features the first recording of new Fleetwood Mac music since the release of "Say You Will" over a decade ago. "Fleetwood Mac has consistently pushed the envelope - creating new sounds, making music that seems designed for radio and looking at the industry in new ways," says Irving Azoff of Azoff Music Management, a representative of the band. "It's fitting that a group that's played such an integral role in radio and music history would be the first band to take such a major step -- helping the music industry create a sustainable digital marketplace so it can thrive for decades to come. We're delighted to join Clear Channel in creating a new model for the music industry, one that will be good for performing artists, good for music fans, and good for the people who have invested their talent, time and money."
RADAR 117: Radio Reaches 242 Million People Weekly According to highlights from the June 2013 RADAR 117 National Radio Listening Report, just released by Arbitron, radio’s audience increased year over year, adding more than 430,000 weekly listeners. Radio now reaches 242.5 million listeners, or 92 percent of persons, age 12 and older, on an average weekly basis. Daily time spent listening to radio among persons age 12 and older held steady versus the June 2012 RADAR report. People aged 12 and older who listen to radio are reported to spend approximately 2 hours and 36 minutes a day with the medium. RADAR 117 also shows radio's audience diversity. According to the June 2013 RADAR report, radio saw gains in the Hispanic audience across all major demographic groups versus the June 2012 report, while the Black (non-Hispanic) audience remained steady year over year. Among highlights from Arbitron, Radio’s Hispanic audience aged 12 and older added 492,000 weekly listeners versus the June 2012 RADAR report. Radio reaches nearly 95 percent of Hispanic listeners aged 12 and older in an average week. Hispanic adults aged 18 to 49 showed the largest gains, adding 600,000 weekly listeners versus the year ago report. Radio’s Black (non-Hispanic) teen audience aged 12 to 17 remained steady versus the June 2012 report. Radio now reaches 90 percent of Black (non-Hispanic) teens in an average week. Senate Committee Confirmation Hearing for Tom Wheeler Set The Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee has set a hearing for next Tuesday (June 18) on the confirmation of Tom Wheeler as the next FCC Chairman. Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) announced the hearing for 2:30pm ET at the Russell Senate Office Building. The hearing will be webcast live via the Senate Commerce Committee website. Although the initial hearing for Wheeler is now set, most observers believe an actual confirmation vote is still not near. President Obama has yet to nominate a replacement for Republican Robert McDowell -- mainly because Republicans haven't agreed on a choice for that Commission seat. Democrat Wheeler and the Republican will likely both have to be vetted and voted by the Senate Commerce Committee before a full Senate vote. Commissioner Mignon Clyburn is currently serving as Acting FCC Chair, and may have a rather long tenure in the role. There are reports now circulating, though, that Fred Campbell, Director of the Competitive Enterprise Institute's Communications Liberty and Innovation Project, has been interviewed for the Republican FCC seat recently vacated by McDowell. Campbell has declined comment, pointing out that in his role at the project, he has not been commenting on the FCC Commissioner or Chairman selection process in general. But a source has reportedly told some media that the staff of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), had talked to Campbell about the post. Nielsen: Streaming Music Strikes Chord with Consumers Consumers are engaging with digital music at increasingly high rates, with nearly 22 billion songs streamed online in the U.S. so far in 2013, according to a new Nielsen study examining streaming music. According to Nielsen, although there's a plethora of options for streaming songs, most connected device owners listen on their smartphones. Listeners of all ages except those over the age of 55, named smartphones as their collective device of choice for streaming the sounds of the radio. Nielsen's first-quarter 2013 study of U.S. connected device owners found that device owners aged 25-34 and 18-24 are the most likely to stream tunes from the radio using their smartphones (27% and 26%, respectively), while consumers aged 55+ opt for laptops (14%). When it comes to downloading music, however, consumers prefer laptops, given their larger storage capabilities. In fact, almost half of Americans aged 18-24 who own a connected device favor a laptop for downloading music (47%). Even technologically fickle teens are just as likely to choose a laptop for downloading music (27%) as they are a smartphone (28%). U.S. smartphone owners are also using radio-esque apps more than they were a year ago. An April 2013 analysis of five of today’s arguably must-have music streaming apps found double and triple-digit growth in unique users over the past year. All of the apps from the select group grew in popularity, but the iheartradio app showed the largest increase, as the number of users in April 2013 had more than doubled from the prior year (107% increase in users). Spotify, which has steadily gained traction in the U.S. following its July 2011 launch, followed with a 91 percent increase in app users from April 2012. The other analyzed apps also showed strong year-over-year growth: Slacker Radio (84%), Pandora (71%) and Rhapsody (41%). "What’s more, the Pandora radio app is pretty popular among users of the other analyzed radio apps. Approximately one-third of the users of the other radio apps also used Pandora during the month. Twenty-seven percent of Rhapsody app users also used the Pandora app, says the study report. Read more from Nielsen. Clovis, who is also a college economics professor, thus makes it official that he's seeking the Iowa Senate seat being vacated by the retiring Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA). But the run for office will force Clovis off the air at KSCJ-AM, after hosting a 10-11am show for the past three and a half years. “Maybe the next time I come back it will be in a different capacity,” he told his listeners. Then he issued this statement for the media: “I believe that government is best, when government is both pragmatic and honest. Right now, we have neither. I am running in an effort to preserve American Exceptionalism for our kids, for our grandkids. I am running to expose the advance of crony capitalism, to halt the outrageous spending of taxpayer money and the wasteful entity that government has become. Lastly, I am running to flip ‘politics as usual’ on its proverbial head. Arbitron Launches Granularity Model-Ready Ratings Data Arbitron announces that its Model-Ready Radio data is now available in GfK MRI's Granularity Portal. "The model-ready radio ratings data is linked with Media Monitors commercial airplay data to enable advertisers to get a better read on radio's contribution to marketing and sales results," says Arbitron. "Its presence in the Granularity portal is designed to boost radio's presence in marketing mix models and make it easier, faster and less error prone to use for advertisers, agencies and modelers." We're told that the model-ready data is now available in Granularity to all subscribers of the new data set. It had previously been available in a beta version for a limited number of trial users, which was announced in October 2011. Arbitron says that a series of case studies demonstrated that the model-ready Arbitron PPM Radio Ratings Data can help improve the statistical reliability of marketing mix models and provide advertisers with a better understanding of radio's ability to drive marketing ROI. The data is based on PPM radio ratings which is linked to commercial occurrence data from Media Monitors for the specific date, quarter-hour, and station on which each commercial ran. Board Buzz On Pandora's Acquisition of 'Real Radio Station' We suspected that the report of Pandora's acquisition of an over-the-air FM radio station (KXMZ-FM, Rapid City, South Dakota) -- to try to level the field for fees it pays to ASCAP -- might become a topic of talk at RadioDiscussions.com. And it has indeed. Member "TheBigA" questions whether "this will change the company's view that OTA radio should pay royalties to labels" -- something that others may also wonder. The excellent post says, "I've seen Tim Westergren speak several times before music industry groups, and he's always gone out of his way to say that because he's a musician, he doesn't want to sidestep any of the royalties his company might owe. When he announces how much of his company's revenues goes to royalties, he always gets a standing ovation. But since Pandora has gone public, it's clear that the company's goals are different from Tim's. They have taken several actions aimed at getting their royalty payments under control, in an attempt to finally turn a profit. They've even partnered with OTA Radio in Congress to fight for the Internet Radio Fairness Act. All of this has led to the head of one label say, 'Your business model is not our problem.' So for all that Pandora and other internet broadcasters have done to introduce new music to the public, it's clear that the music industry has no sympathy for the company's financial situation. The latest negotiations with Apple have shown which company has the better business model, and in the end, all the music industry really cares about is money. So who can blame Pandora for taking this move? I just feel they need to publicly change their views on the label performance royalty." Unfortunately for traditional radio, however, we don't foresee a change in Pandora's position on OTA performance royalties. It should be noted that most terrestrial broadcasters are now realizing the ultimate settlement of that issue will be a combo deal for moderate fees for both over-the-air and digital, much like the kinds of deals Clear Channel has initiated. And for new "real radio" operator Pandora, that's exactly what they want.
