Arbitron's 'Radio Today 2013' Details Format Strengths

Radio Today 2013

Arbitron releases "Radio Today 2013 - How America Listens to Radio." Among highlights of the study, Country and New Country, already the Number One format in the report last year, grew again to remain in first place and reach another record audience share. The format benefited most from an influx of listeners aged 18-24 and is even #2 among teen listeners nationally. News/Talk/Information and Talk/Personality remained #1 in PPM markets and #2 in the rest of the U.S. The 2,121 rated AM, FM, HD Radio and streamed stations in these formats far exceed any other format. Like other spoken word formats, N/T/I + T/P rank prominently in highly educated, high income listeners. Top 40 continued its pace of recent years, and this year moved from the fourth to the third-most-popular radio format when ranked by AQH share. What’s more, Top 40’s 72 million weekly listeners is tops among all radio formats, supplanting AC and Soft AC as the #1 format on a cume basis. Nearly 30% of teen females nationally listen to Top 40 stations. Adult Contemporary and Soft Adult Contemporary’s 69 million 12+ listeners is off from previous years, due in part to the surge in Country, Top 40 and Hot AC listening. The formats boast high-income, highly educated (mostly female) listeners and they remain strong in the midday daypart, reinforcing their reputations as "at-work" strongholds. Classic Hits has steadily replaced Oldies as the format to play pop hits from recent decades. As such, it reached a ratings high in Spring 2012.The format has a near-equal male-female gender share and it performs equally well in all market sizes. Classic Rock registered its highest audience share in a decade and remains a reliable performer in all market sizes and rates highly among its core demographic of 45-54 men (the format’s 70% male composition ranks fourth-most-male among the 22 formats in this year’s study). Hot AC experienced the second largest growth spurt in this year’s study and achieved a national historical high. Its gains were notable among teens, adults 18-24, and adults 35-44.

Emmis Reports Domestic Radio Revenue Up 3%

Emmis Communications

Emmis Communications reports that domestic radio revenue grew 3% for its fourth fiscal quarter ending February 28, 2013, with a 2.8% increase in overall revenues. Emmis also reports financial results for its full fiscal year. According to a news release, "Emmis pro forma radio revenues reported on the same basis grew 4.2%, exclusive of revenue associated with 98.7FM in New York, which is being programmed by ESPN pursuant to an LMA. On a reported basis, net radio revenues for the quarter were up 2%. For the full year, pro forma radio revenues were $128.0 million, compared to $123.9 million in the prior year, an increase of 3 percent. Market revenues for the full year reported to Miller Kaplan in markets where Emmis competes, excluding barter revenues, grew 0.7% and Emmis pro forma radio revenues reported on the same basis were up 3.4% during the same period." Says Emmis President and CEO Jeff Smulyan, "Emmis is known for operational excellence, and I'm pleased to say this year was no different. For the second year in a row we have significantly outperformed our radio markets and the radio industry. Emmis finished the year as one of the least leveraged and most financially sound operators in the country.” Station operating income during the quarter, pro forma for station divestitures, was $7.1 million, compared to $4.0 million for the same quarter of the prior year. Excluding the pro forma adjustments, fiscal Q4 radio revenue was up 2%, but down 4% for the full fiscal year. Also minus the pro forma adjustments, for the full fiscal year overall net revenue was down 3%. Read more from Emmis here.

Greater Media Detroit, for now, is only saying, "Stay tuned for an exciting announcement in the very near future!"

Another High Profile TRN Exit: This Time, Phil Hendrie

TRN

Talk Radio Networks and Phil Hendrie are parting ways as of June 25. A spokesperson for Hendrie says in a statement, "Phil Hendrie has elected not to pursue any further association with Talk Radio Network. Phil Hendrie As he delves deeper into his successful digital platform and ongoing television and film work, Hendrie remains open to terrestrial radio opportunities, but only those with strong sales, marketing and programming support." Hendrie has been syndicated by TRN since 2007, moving from Premiere Networks. "I believed in Phil then, and I still think he is a comic genius on-air," says TRN CEO Mark Masters. "He will always be a radio icon to me." Masters adds, "We are proud to have rebuilt the Phil Hendrie Show by adding over 100 stations, along with creating robust growth to Phil's online presence, but, due to world events, the economy, and the state of radio in this country, we have decided to go another direction in that daypart. We wish Phil all the best in his future endeavors." It's not really clear which side initiated the divorce, but neither indicates it's a "no fault divorce."

Triton Digital Releases March Online Audio Rankings

Triton Digital

Pandora remains on top for online listenership metrics as Triton Digital releases its monthly Internet audio rankings for March 2013. Pandora's Average Active Sessions (AAS) for Monday-Friday 6am-8pm in the Domestic Rankings, however, were down from over 1.9 million in February to 1,849,802 AAS. Analysts say the decrease is likely the result of Pandora's new cap on free mobile monthly streaming. Pandora's Session Starts were back up to over 905 million in March. Clear Channel was ranked second again, with 309,871 AAS and almost 138.6 million Session Starts. Slacker was up from fifth to third in March, edging past Cumulus (#4) and CBS Radio (#5). The top ten is filled out by NPR Member Stations, Cox Radio, EMF Corporate, Entercom and ESPN Radio. In the March's All Streams Ranker, Clear Channel is again in first place with 312,047 AAS, followed by Digitally Imported at #2 and Prisa Radio at #3. Slacker was at #4, with CBS Radio ranked fifth. Cumulus, NPR, Cox, EMF Corporate and 977Music.com filled out the top ten. For the full week Domestic Ranker, Pandora was at the top, with Clear Channel second, and Slacker up to third place. Cumulus, CBS, NPR, Cox, EMF Corporate, Entercom and ESPN round out the top ten. And for the All Streams Ranker's full week rankings, Clear Channel was first, followed by Digitally Imported, Slacker, Prisa Radio, CBS, Cumulus, NPR, Cox, 977Music.com and EMF Corporate.

Triton Digital also released additional data and analysis this month, looking at the effects of Pandora's decision to cap its free mobile listening at 40 hours. Triton found a three percent drop in mobile listening for Pandora during the Monday through Sunday 6am to midnight daypart from March to February. During the same time period, Triton found a 23 percent increase in Pureplay mobile listening and a five percent increase in Terrestrial. Triton notes, "At first glance, 3 percent may not seem overly concerning, but we have to take into account the scale of Pandora’s audience. Did capping Pandora drive a portion of their mobile listeners to other Pureplays, such as Slacker, who saw an 18 percent gain during the same period? It's possible. Or, perhaps this growth is attributed to the fact that mobile audio consumption was our fastest growing segment in March 2013. Looking back to the year prior, mobile listening accounted for 46 percent of all audio consumption in March 2012. Today, we have crossed the threshold where over half of all listening is consumed on mobile devices."

Pandora Self-Reports Its Share of Radio Listening Is Down Again
Meanwhile, Pandora reports it's dropped to 7.33 percent of total U.S. radio listening in the month of April. That's the second consecutive month the unverified, self-reported numbers have gone down. In March, Pandora reported an 8.05 percent share, down from a February 8.48 percent share. A Pandora spokesperson says, "This could be attributed to the 40-hour mobile listening limit, which was intended to reduce hours streamed without impacting the size or growth of Pandora's audience. April’s listener metrics show that the limit is working as intended: we saw an increase in total active listeners and a reduction of total hours streamed. These results are in line with our expectations. Moreover, Triton data shows there has been no material impact to Pandora’s rankings in major radio markets nationwide."

Jacobs Media's Techsurvey9 Format Webinars Scheduled

Techsurvey9

Following the release of the results from Jacobs Media's Techsurvey 9, the company announces a series of webinars for six key format groupings from the study. Each presentation will provide format-specific information on the digital, social, and media habits of radio listeners, including new data broken down generationally. No other research company offers a chance to get a deep dive format analysis to help broadcasters shape their strategies, their programming, and their sales." Participation in each webinar is open to all radio stations and costs $99. Each participant will receive webinar access as well as their format’s "Media Usage Pyramid" that graphically illustrates the hierarchy of media habits from the study. The webinars scheduled -- each at 2pm ET -- are May 14 - Country; May 17 - Christian; May 21 - News Talk; May 29 - Sports; June 4 - Rock (AAA, Alternative, Classic Rock, Active Rock); and, June 10 - AC/CHR/Hot AC. WTOP/Washington Website Hacked

WTOP

The websites of Hubbard Radio WTOP-FM, Washington DC, and sister "Federal News Radio" WFED-AM, were hacked this week. The attacks by hackers, we're told, may have affected visitors using Internet Explorer, but not other browsers. A message at WTOP.com after the attacks were discovered advised visitors, “WTOP.com is currently dealing with a malicious cyber attack. We are working diligently to contain and stop the attack, and apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.” Hubbard’s DC Director of Digital Media John Meyer says they have been blocking access to the affected sites for IE users. The Washington Post reports that an internet security expert says the hackers installed two types of malware -- one designed to look like an anti-virus software service that would get the subscriber’s credit card number, the other designed to control clicks from the user’s computer to inflate the number of actual clicks on digital ads.
