Jacobs Media Techsurvey9 Released
Techsurvey9 shows that while gadgets and new media continue to occupy the headlines, radio's ability to uniquely connect with consumers on their preferred platforms is the "secret sauce" for future success in the digital space. Jacobs Media has now released its Techsurvey9 study of core radio listeners. Previously some data was presented in a series of webinars, but now Fred Jacobs has unveiled the 2013 edition of the Techsurvey series at the WorldWide Radio Summit in Los Angeles. This one was based on a study of 264 radio stations with a sample of 78,111 respondents. The study, conducted during the first two months of this year, is said to be the largest-ever such study of radio. The media habits of twelve different format core audiences were examined, utilizing four generations to tell a deeper story about media and technology use. Techsurvey9 shows that radio is making the transition to digital. Consumers are now accessing station content on digital channels. When asked to recall their last week's listening to the station that sent them our survey, 14% said they tuned in on computer and mobile streams, as well as other digital sources. The younger the generation, the more reliance there is on digital platforms to enjoy broadcast radio.
Although radio is making the transition to digital, AM/FM Radio still matters. This year's Techsurvey9 finds that the "emotional triggers" from 2012's Techsurvey8 study are intact -- listening to radio at work, mood enhancement, escape, and companionship. And consumers continue to demand radio in their new cars, as well as rely on broadcast radio for new music and new artist discovery.
Fisher Communications Q1 Radio Revenue Down 9% Fisher Communications reports first quarter radio net revenue was down 9% from the year-ago period, to $4.3 million. That, says the company, was "due to market softness." Radio cash flow was down $0.22 million to $0.65 million. Radio cash flow margin of 15% was down from 18%. Fisher's TV division revenue grew 12 percent to $32.6 million. The company reports a first quarter net loss of $0.8 million, or $0.09 per share, compared to a net loss of $1.9 million, or $0.21 per share, in the first quarter of 2012, which included $1.2 million of pre-tax transaction-related expenses. Excluding the after-tax transaction-related expenses, the financial results for the first quarter would be about the same year-to-year. Says Fisher President and CEO Colleen Brown, "2013 is off to a strong start, led by the continued market share growth among our broadcast stations. This momentum reflects the quality and value of our local brands and is the direct result of solid execution across our group of broadcast stations. A testament to the excellence of our local media properties, Fisher recently dominated the 2013 Edward R Murrow Awards in the Northwest region, bringing home 10 Edward R Murrow awards, including the coveted Overall Excellence awards for KOMO-TV and KOMO Newsradio in Seattle. At the same time, we coupled operational execution with financial excellence, delivering substantial year-over-year improvements in TV cash flow and adjusted EBITDA." Duran will continue to host KOB-FM's "Morning Mayhem" in addition to his new responsibilities. "Putting Carlos in the KOB-FM programming chair was a no-brainer," says Operations Manager Kris Abrams. "His hands have been all over the station for 10-plus years. Nobody has more sweat and equity into this brand." Says Cumulus SVPc of Programming Jan Jeffries, "Carlos has showed his tenacity and strong work ethic for years as Assistant PD, implementing and polishing the Cumulus strategy. We are proud of him and look forward to a long and successful future together doing great radio in Albuquerque." VP and General Manager Jim Christoferson tells us, "Carlos has been the 'heart and soul' of KOB-FM. Not only is he a top tier talent, now as PD, he will better be able to channel his vision and energy into making the station even more attractive to listeners and advertisers." Says Duran, "Jim Christoferson has an exceptional and focused drive to win. I am extremely honored to be working with my Cumulus corporate partners in Jan Jeffries, Mike McVay and Jeff Andrews. And, I'm extremely eager to reconnect with OM Kris Abrams, whom I have long considered to be a mentor as he originally hired me at KOB-FM a decade ago. I would to thank all of them for entrusting me with a brand I am fully invested and believe in." FEMA Teams with Premiere Networks for EAS The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announces a cooperative effort with Premiere Networks and private sector broadcasters that will provide an alternative method for radio stations to receive emergency information during a national emergency. As we first reported late Thursday, FEMA has added Premiere Networks as a Primary Entry Point station, which delivers information and instructions to the public in an emergency when there is no commercial power. As part of the cooperative effort, Premiere, would use its satellite program receivers in thousands of affiliate radio stations across the country as another tool for delivering national Emergency Alert System (EAS) messages. The radio affiliates would in turn broadcast the emergency messages to the public within its network. President of Content and Affiliate Services for National Media Groups at Clear Channel Julie Talbott says, "FEMA's Emergency Alert System is one of the most important tools for preparing and notifying the public during times of emergency. We're honored to work with FEMA to help distribute these potentially life-saving messages to U.S. citizens and strengthen disaster readiness on a national level." Says Damon Penn, Assistant Administrator of FEMA's National Continuity Program, "This cooperative effort between FEMA and Premiere Networks is one of the latest initiatives to engage the private sector’s cooperation in raising community preparedness across the nation. We count on the broadcasting industry to alert and warn the public through the standard broadcast Emergency Alert System (EAS) including AM, FM, and satellite radio, as well as broadcast, cable and satellite TV, if a national emergency occurs." FEMA's Integrated Public Alert and Warning System (or IPAWS) permits national emergency alert messages to be delivered simultaneously through multiple communications devices. While a presidential EAS message has never been activated, IPAWS provides the President with a way to address the American people within 10 minutes of a national emergency. Other alerting authorities include State, local, territorial, and Tribal public safety officials designated to communicate alerts. "Westchester Public Radio" WDFH-FM, at 90.3, currently operates with 53 watts, serving Northern Westchester County, and airs a so-called "freeform music format" and some programming from Pacifica, plus local community affairs programming. New York Public Radio is asking the FCC for a waiver to operate the Ossining station from the WQXR-FM studios in Newark, NJ. Permission is also being sought to increase WDFH-FM's power to 250 watts. FCC approval of that application is a condition for the sale to close. There’s no LMA before closing. The show will be hosted by Tesh, Connie Sellecca, who serves as the host of "Intelligence for Your Health Radio," and Gib Gerard. Says Tesh, "The greatest differentiating factor in this program is our local strategy. It's designed for local viewers and advertisers and for the national brands that are interested in a locally-strategic advertising approach. I spent 25 years in the local news world and am naturally very familiar with the needs of the local advertiser. We are implementing the rich content approach we've been using for the last 10 years on our radio program, to not only create useful 'life coaching' pieces for the viewer, but to also create unique, embedded-content pieces in which our advertisers can reside.
