SBS Q1 Radio Revenue Up 19%, Overall Revenue Up 22%

SBS

Spanish Broadcasting System reports first quarter radio revenue increased 19%, while overall net revenue jumped 22% to almost $33 million ($32.959 million). Although radio results were impressive, the SBS television segment did even better, accounting for the higher overall increase. Television revenues were up 42% on an increase in special events revenue. The year-to-year gains are credited to special events revenue, national, barter, local and interactive sales. SBS says Los Angeles was primarily responsible for the increase in national sales. Puerto Rico and New York also showed increases for local revenue, while there were decreases in Chicago and San Francisco. "We generated double digit increases in our revenue and cash flow during the first quarter," says Chairman and CEO Raul Alarcon. "We are benefiting from the investments we have made in our multi-media platform and sales efforts, as we expand our revenue profile and drive creative marketing opportunities for our advertising partners. Leveraging our audience reach and relationships in the talent arena, we have increasingly demonstrated our ability to drive attendance at special events and deliver returns on our investment. At the same, we continue to carefully manage our costs and expect our TV operations to return to profitability for the remainder of the year. Our audience shares have remained strong and we are seeing an improvement in the advertising environment. As a result, we remain optimistic that we can continue to generate improved results in the year ahead.” With the overall results, we're told that OIBDA rose 53% to $9.7 million, and operating income jumped 52% to $7.3 million. Net loss narrowed from $3.663 million to $2.753 million.

In an SEC filing, SBS also reports that it has replaced its auditor -- KPMG. The company says it's now using independent public accountant Crowe Horwath LLP. According to the filing, the SBS Board of Directors "approved the dismissal of KPMG LLP" as "the Company’s independent registered public accountant effective as of the date of KPMG’s completion of the review services for the first quarter ending March 31, 2013."

Non-Advertising Retailer Receives Rush Limbaugh Backlash

Rush Limbaugh

The Belk department store chain doesn't advertise on Rush Limbaugh's syndicated radio show. In fact, they say they don't advertise on any Talk radio shows. Yet, Belk has been caught up in a controversy over the Conservative talker. A co-op ad purchased by a vendor aired on Limbaugh's Premiere-syndicated show -- and mentioned Belk. That was enough to get a liberal group that monitors the show to pressure advertisers to abandon the show blasting Belk. So Belk spread the word that it doesn't advertise on Limbaugh's program. And that drew the ire of conservative groups. Belk was caught in backlashes from both ends of the political spectrum. Says a Belk spokes, "This is why we don't advertise on Talk radio."

Belk Belk is based in Charlotte, North Carolina, where the NewsObserver reports, "The ad featuring Belk was apparently first noticed Monday by a group on Facebook that monitors Rush Limbaugh’s advertisers in an effort to pressure the talk show host financially. On Tuesday, the liberal website Daily Kos mentioned the ad in a posting. People started posting messages on Belk’s Facebook page protesting the ad." And then "Tuesday morning, Belk posted a message on the Facebook page explaining that it doesn’t advertise with Rush Limbaugh, and the ad was run by one of the company’s vendors as part of a new campaign. 'We’ve asked the vendor to pull the ads featuring Belk from The Rush Limbaugh Show going forward,' the company wrote." That's what resulted in the second furor. It "appeared to only stoke the online fires. By Wednesday afternoon, Belk’s Facebook post had attracted more than 1,100 comments, many from conservatives incensed that the company was not advertising with Limbaugh. Belk’s page was also bombarded by more partisan postings." The retail chain's spokes then said "Belk wasn’t targeting Limbaugh’s show when it asked the vendor to stop running the ad in question," reiterating the company just doesn't advertise on talk shows -- conservative, liberal or otherwise.

Borneman, whose affiliation with WPLJ-FM dated back to 1999 when he was GSM there, was hailed by Clear Channel as a valuable addition to their New York City group. Now, without explanation or further comment, Clear Channel confirms that Borneman is gone. Effectively, he went from oversight of WABC-AM to Station Manager for WOR-AM. After he exited Cumulus, Kim Bryant was named as his replacement and remains in place.
