Infinite Dial 2013: 31% of AC P1s Listen to Online Radio Weekly

Arbitron and Edison Research Release More 'Data from the Annual Study

Infinite Dial

Two out of three AC P1 listeners have Wi-Fi in their homes, with 24 percent living in homes with at least five Wi-Fi connected devices, according to "The Infinite Dial 2013: Navigating Digital Platforms" -- as Arbitron and Edison Research release more data from the annual study, this time focusing on AC listeners. According to this year's study, 31 percent of AC P1s listen to online radio on a weekly basis, while 20 percent said they listened to Pandora in the past week. For online radio, Pandora has the highest awareness among AC listeners, followed by iHeartRadio and Spotify. While 47 percent of AC P1s are familiar with podcasting, just eight percent listened to a podcast in the month berfore the survey. Close to one in three AC P1s watch YouTube on a weekly basis, and 57 percent are likely to keep their cell phone 'within arm's length," which makes them more likely to do so than the overall Persons 12+ surveyed for the study. AC P1s are also more likely than the average radio listener to use their cell phone to wake them up in the morning (40 percent compared to 30 percent). Half of AC P1s own a smartphone. AC P1s are also more likely to own a tablet than the average radio fan, with 39 percent owning the devices compared to 29 percent of Persons 12+.

Infinite Dial 2013 Additionally, 62 percent of AC P1s have a social network profile, while AC P1s are more likely to be frequent social media users, as 31 percent said they use such sites "several times a day." They also have an above-average number of Facebook friends, as Facebook is the dominant player when it comes to AC P1s and social media. AC fans are also more likely to use Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and Pinterest. AC P1s are more likely to listen to AM/FM radio in the car than the average radio listener, with CD players ranked second, followed by iPod/MP3 Player. Just 13 percent use satellite radio in their car, with six percent listening to online radio and two percent tuning in to HD Radio. Also, AC P1s are less likely to think it is important to learn about and keep up with new music, while 84 percent would be disappointed if their favorite station went off the air. Considering Facebook's popularity among AC P1s, it is not surprising they are also more likely to "like" their favorite station on the social networking site. Eight percent are signed up for their favorite station's email list. AC P1s are also more likely to be listening to the radio just before going to shop, with 55 percent compared to 49 percent overall.

Jacobs Media Releases Techsurvey 9 News/Talk Data

Techsurvey9

Jacobs Media has released further data from its new Techsurvey9, examining News/Talk radio formats. Almost 12,000 News/Talk radio fans representing 27 stations across North America participated in Techsurvey9, with Jacobs finding that for them "it is all about information and they gravitate to multiple sources – beyond the radio to get it." Says Jacobs Media President Fred Jacobs "NewsTalk fans are especially likely to start their day with radio, but from there, it’s tablets, satellite radio, on demand, and a host of other information sources." Among highlights revealed during the latest in a series of webinars, we learn that more so than any of the other 11 format fan groups, News/Talk partisans are most likely to begin their day with broadcast radio. More than half (54 percent) wake up to a radio station, especially at home. As for "the news appetite,": while they love their news and talk programming, they are less likely to be heavy radio listeners than fans of other formats. They are also less apt to be heavy users of the station that sent them this survey and less likely to recommend it to others. While their public radio weekly listening is only average, they have a much greater propensity to be SiriusXM subscribers.

Other key findings revealed include:
* Information please: While fans of music formats often cite emotional reasons for listening to the radio (escape, companionship, etc.), NewsTalk devotees have a singular focus on information when they listen to the radio. While nearly three-fourths say that news, traffic, and weather info is paramount (74 percent), other key motivators include shows and hosts, as well as emergency information.
* "Got tablets": More than four in ten NewsTalk fans own a tablet – among the highest of the 12 formats included in Techsurvey9. And these respondents are more likely to be toting around an Apple tablet.
* Building strong relationships: While three-fourths have a social media profile of one kind or another, the road to building better bonds with NewsTalk fans is via the email club. And beyond Facebook, LinkedIn is a strong second social choice for NewsTalk partisans.

Still to come are more webinars for Sports Radio (May 29), Rock/Classic Rock/Alternative/Triple A (June 4), and AC/CHR/Hot AC (June 10). Information to register for those webinars can be found at http://www.jacobsmedia.com/techsurvey9/formatwebinars.asp. Techsurvey9 results were gathered online from January 29 - February 19, 2013. Overall, 264 broadcast stations across the U.S. and Canada participated, contributing 78,111 total respondents.

Birmingham Sports Talker Paul Finebaum Joins ESPN Radio

Paul Finebaum

Birmingham Sports Talker Paul Finebaum is not jumping crosstown -- at least not directly. He's joining ESPN Radio in Charlotte, North Carolina -- and taking his regional "Paul Finebaum Radio Network" with him. There had been expectations that he'd go directly to Birmingham's "97.3 The Zone" WZNN-FM after leaving, and then waiting out his non-compete agreement with WJOX-FM. Still, it looks like Cox Media Group's WZNN-FM will become his new Birmingham affiliate for his regional network that airs the "Paul Finebaum Show." The Sports Talk host today (May 21) became free of his non-compete restrictions that kicked in after his January 21 exit from Cumulus' WJOX-FM. Finebaum will relocate to Charlotte as he joins ESPN, where he will host his radio show, as well as make appearances on television College Football programming. When it launches in 2014, his radio show will be simulcast on the SEC Network. The radio show will air separately from ESPN Radio's 24/7 network and will at first be regionally syndicated in the Southeast -- effectively reviving the "Paul Finebaum Radio Network." Finebaum says that unlike basic ESPN Radio programming, his show will continue to be caller driven. "It would be the understatement of my life to say I was thrilled," Finebaum tells us. "It is incredibly exciting to be part of a new adventure, particularly one that involves the premier brand in sports along with the pre-eminent conference in sports."

Streamline Digital Acquires RadioDiscussions.com

RadioDiscussions

Streamline Digital, a division of Streamline Publishing, has acquired the Radio Discussions message boards (www.radiodiscussions.com) from in3Media, operated by Diana Fleming. The popular boards were originally the discussion arm of in3Media's Radio-Info.com site, and were retained when in3Media sold Radio-Info to Talkers publisher Michael Harrison. Streamline has long operated Radio Ink (print and online), and recently acquired RBR.com as well. Says Streamline Publishing CEO Jim Robinson, "This is a perfect fit for Streamline's Radio Ink and RBR-TVBR news brands. These three strong individual businesses provide distinctly valuable content to our audiences, and effective environments for our marketing partners. We are dedicated to keeping readers current on news and the media conversations that are trending. The social interactivity of the discussion boards is the right complement to Radio Ink and RBR-TVBR." Streamline founder and Chairman Eric Rhoads says in a statement, "We're investing heavily to grow our digital services in the broadcasting industry to give the radio and television industries deeper sources of information, and to give our advertisers a platform with which to grow their businesses. These discussion boards attract significant amounts of traffic and give us the opportunity to offer wide reach across multiple interest groups and to offer geographic targeting."

Oklahoma Radio Commended for Response to Deadly Super Tornado

Oklahoma tornado devastation

As the devastating and deadly -- possibly record -- "super" tornado struck Oklahoma Monday (May 20), broadcasters responded, as they have many times in disaster situations, with news and information, serving as a lifeline to locals. Says NAB President and CEO Gordon Smith, "NAB salutes our Oklahoma broadcasting brethren who are performing a public service that simply cannot be replicated by any other communications technology. Time and again during a crisis, local radio and TV stations have saved countless lives with 'boots-on-the-ground' reporting and advanced weather meteorology. There is no doubt that local broadcasters face new competitive threats in the form of social media, SmartPhones and the latest apps. But it is equally true that broadcasting's 'one-to-everyone' transmission architecture remains indispensable as a lifeline service in times of danger." Oklahoma Association of Broadcasters President and CEO Vance Harrison said that radio and TV "provided severe weather coverage which was accurate and timely. Countless lives were saved due to the extraordinary efforts of every broadcaster when it really mattered. As we've seen during every single severe weather event, Oklahomans have relied on the experience and reliability of their local broadcasters to keep them out of harm's way." Oklahoma Governor Mary Fallin thanked local media at a news conference in Moore, Oklahoms, Monday night, for providing wall-to-wall coverage of the approaching storm and informing people to find shelter. "I want to say thank you so very much to the media. The media has done a superb job over the last couple of days of keeping people informed about the current weather conditions, especially our weathermen and those that have been on the ground driving and calling and tracking the storm itself."

Report: GOP Considering Duke Professor Michelle Connolly for FCC

Michelle Connolly

Senate Republicans reportedly are seriously considering Duke University Professor Michelle Connolly for a preferred GOP nominee to the FCC to fill the seat just vacated by Commissioner Robert McDowell. Politico says that four industry sources confirmed to them that Connolly is "considered a strong candidate to win Republicans’ blessings" for the Commission seat. She currently serves as a professor in the Economics Department at Duke. Connolly has had two tours of duty as chief economist at the FCC -- first in 2006-07 and then in 2008-09 -- according to her online biography. And she has written extensively on telecom and media policy, at one point testifying before Congress in 2011 on spectrum reform. Connolly, we're told, however, did not return a request for comment to Politico. "Top Senate GOP lawmakers, who customarily can recommend a candidate to the president, also had no comment," says thr report. Connolly, though, is not the only name in the running. "Sources have pointed to other candidates, including A.B. Cruz, who left Scripps Networks last year, and two top Republican telecom staffers on Capitol Hill, Ray Baum and Neil Fried," writes Politico's Tony Romm. "In the end, the Republican nominee is critical: Only when paired with a GOP candidate can Tom Wheeler, President Barack Obama’s selection to lead the FCC, receive a confirmation vote, telecom insiders believe."

Spotify to Offer 'Top 50' Song Charts

Spotify

Music streaming service Spotify will begin publishing lists of its top 50 most-streamed songs and most-shared songs, embedded with links that allow fans to listen without registering or signing into the service. "The move is part of Spotify's efforts to broaden its user base, which totals 24 million active members world-wide and only 6 million paid subscribers," reports The Wall Street Journal. Pandora has some 70 million active users and more than 200 million registered users, relying more on advertising than paid subscriptions for its revenue. The charts will be called the "Spotify 50" (the most-streamed songs) and the "Social 50" (the most-shared songs). In addition to being available on Spotify’s own site, the two new charts will be offered as widgets which other websites can embed. "Those widgets will basically be mini Spotify music players, with each of the fifty tracks available to listen to without having to register first," reports SlashGear. [See our Update below as we dispute that claim based on our own test.] Users will be able to click to stream tracks on the charts and review charts from past weeks. The lists will update automatically each Monday at approximately 12noon ET. "Data is our secret sauce," says Ken Parks, who heads Spotify's U.S. operations. Parks says the information the company has amassed about its users listening habits, as well as how music gets shared through social media, has helped it discover a number of potentially big acts it hopes to help break in the near future, moving in on what was once record-label territory. Spotify will also begin releasing play-count data -- the total number of global plays of a track since October 2008, allowing artists to track how their music is performing. The streaming service also is launching a web-based music player. Previously, users had to download the Spotify application to their computers or mobile devices and open the app in order to stream tunes, "a process that has frustrated some users," as WSJ puts it.

UPDATE: Based on our own early testing, we are disputing one (major) point reported by WSJ and SlashGear -- that the widgets "allow fans to listen without registering or signing into the service." Our test of the player, embedded below, resulted in an inability to hear a song without first signing up for Spotify. We clicked on Justin Timberlake's "Mirrors" and a new window was opened with a separate song-specific player. But when we clicked the play button, the window abruptly segued to a new one that insisted we either sign-up or sign-in. Whether this snafu is temporary or permanent remains to be seen. (Our own TotalPopularMusic.com weekly "Super Sixty" and "Daily Dozen" charts have clickable links to immediately listen to all songs listed via their respective music videos which open full screen in a new window that is ready to play.)

Pandora Premieres 'Pandora Premieres'
New 'Station' to Preview New Releases

Pandora

Over-the-air radio, take note. With online sources already beating terrestrial radio for listener-desired new music discovery, comes this additional challenge to traditional broadcasting. "Pandora Premieres" is launched by the streaming music service, described as "a new station that previews upcoming album releases in their entirety before their release." Says Pandora Founder and Chief Strategy Officer Tim Westergren, "Pandora Premieres represents a great new discovery platform for our more than 200 million registered users and an equally powerful vehicle for artists, both established and emerging to reach new audiences. Never has so targeted a program been delivered on such a massive scale." We're told that listeners can access the station by adding the Pandora Premieres station, which will be updated weekly with new releases. With Pandora Premieres, listeners can choose to hear any track on the featured album, in any order and as many times as they'd like, for the time period the album is available on the station. Listeners are encouraged to tune in regularly because new albums will be featured each week, with some artists also offering additional exclusive content such as video interviews. Pandora Premieres debuts with John Fogerty's new recording, "Wrote A Song For Everyone" and Folk singer Laura Marling's "Once I Was An Eagle."
