RAB: Second Quarter Radio Advertising Was Flat
Radio's Second Quarter 2013 revenue registered "no change" from 2012, at $4.66 billion, reports the RAB. First-half comparisons were similarly flat, at $8.44 billion. "Digital provided a bright note, up 16% for the quarter and 13% for the half," says the report. Network was down 4% for both periods. "First-half activity yielded a mixed-bag of results," says RAB President and.CEO Erica Farber. "While the second quarter was flat, activity was gaining as the months progressed, an encouraging sign for growth in the latter half of 2013. When we analyze results for the year thus far, we see a clear commitment to advertising and Radio on the part of the most successful companies within their respective categories. Not only does this affirm the impact of maintaining an advertising presence through all economic climates, it underscores the fact that these marketers know the intrinsic value that Radio -- both on-air and digital -- brings to their brands." The Communications/Cellular category increased Spot spending by over a quarter versus Q2 2012, solidifying their hold on the top rank for the quarter and for the year thus far. An overview of Spot activity among the categories that contribute the most to Radio's bottom line indicates increased spending by advertisers at the mid-tier level.
Politico: Rush Limbaugh Expected to Re-Sign with Cumulus,
After reports that Cumulus Media planned to drop both Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity from its stations at the end of 2013, due to distribution rights costs, and then Limbaugh saying he wasn't leaving Cumulus, and claiming the reports constituted a "public business negotiation," Politico is now reporting that Limbaugh will remain with Cumulus, but Hannity will exit their stations. Limbaugh and Hannity are the number one and number two ranked radio talk hosts in the country. Currently, Cumulus carries their shows on more than 40 stations nationwide. Politico says sources tell them that Limbaugh is now likely to re-sign with Cumulus in "virtually" all markets.
Official: MHBC to Fully Re-Locate All Content to Blogspot.com 'Radio and Media News' and 'Total Popular Music' to Be Exclusively at Blogger Domain 'TotalPopularMusic.com' to Go Directly to Blogspot Home at Start of 2014
Mark Harris Broadcast Consulting (MHBC) today officially announced that all online offerings will be officially and fully be relocated to MHBC's two sites at Google's Blogspot at the start of 2014. Currently, MHBC Radio and Media News originates at Radio-and-Media-News.Blogspot.com and is embedded from there on the "TPM NewsPage" at TotalPopularMusic.com, while much of MHBC's "Total Popular Music" radio programming content is duplicated at TotalPopularMusic.Blogspot.com. The TotalPopularMusic.com domain will be re-directed to its Blogspot counterpart where a direct link to MHBC News will be readily available. Promotion of TPM highlights will continue to be reported (and linked) on the news blog. Mark Harris says in the news release that the content being offered at Blogger will be expanded, although some current offerings will be consolidated. "For example," says Harris, "we will no longer offer separate 'Super Sixty' and 'Super Sixty Airplay' charts, but will consolidate them into one weekly listing. However, with the move to our new home, the offerings at Blogspot will be expanded to include 'Hitbounds' and 'Recurrents.' I expect to begin a transitional time toward those changes as we progress through the remainder of this year." Harris adds, "After a long period of constant and continuing server-related problems from our current hosting company, I've made the decision that when our current contract ends, we will exit after more than six years with that company. I have been asked not to publicly comment on pending federal litigation against that hosting company, or the possibility of federal legal actions in the criminal charges category that may be forthcoming after our exit. I can say that due to the cited problems, we lost much of our early dot com site following over the years, some of which has been recovered with the addition of the Blogspot sites. But, even more important, we've added many new followers at the two blog sites and are now reaching more people in our target audience (and many others) than ever before. Clearly, the Blogger sites are indeed our future." One thing that remains to be finalized is the preservation of the extensive archive of Total Popular Music charts, going back to the third quarter of 2007. Harris is currently exploring several options for hosting them elsewhere and linked to the re-directed dot com when it is exclusively based at Blogspot. MHBC says in its news release that further announcements can be expected in the coming months. Chicago Media Columnist Robert Feder Partners with Tribune
Longtime Chicago media columnist Robert Feder is launching a standalone media blog next month through a partnership with the Chicago Tribune. Feder announced the new deal on his Facebook page, where he's been reporting the latest on Chicago media, including radio, since exiting Time Out Chicago. The Tribune reports the deal as "breaking news" here. "The editorially independent website, RobertFeder.com, will be owned by Feder, but licensed and marketed by the Chicago Tribune Media Group, an agreement based on generating online traffic and advertising revenue. Terms were not disclosed," says the newspaper. "It really is an experiment in setting up a site like that and somebody who is an expert in a field and can generate his own audience," says Bill Adee, SVP of Digital Development and Operations at the Chicago Tribune. "Rob is going to be responsible for what he writes, we'll have our advertising on there, but editorially speaking, he’ll do whatever he wants."
Kevin Graham to Be New WEEI/Boston Program Director?
There are reports from Boston that Entercom will bring in Kevin Graham as the new Program Director of the extensive WEEI Sports Talk stations and network, replacing Jason Wolfe. Graham is currently the Program Director of Cumulus Media's Sports Talk "1320 K-Fan" KFNZ-AM, Salt Lake City. Among those who believe he could be the new WEEI PD "to be announced soon" is the Boston Herald. The newspaper reports that Entercom Market Manager Jeff Brown is "likely" to bring in Graham, after ousting Wolfe (as reported here yesterday). According to the Herald, Brown has reassured morning hosts John Dennis and Gerry Callahan that their jobs are secure as programming oversight is being changed. So far, no comment from Entercom. Brown "declined to discuss it" with the Herald other than to say he will "make an announcement in the next couple of days." That, of course, only fuels the speculation -- because while he wouldn't confirm Graham, he didn't issue a denial either. Graham was named Program Director of KFNZ-AM some 14 months ago, joining the station from PD at "Sports 620" KTAR-AM, Phoenix. Graham at one time was in charge of programming at WXYT-AM, Detroit, and has also had programming stops at ESPN Radio affiliates in New York, Pittsburgh and Columbus, Ohio.
Salt Lake City's 'The End' Ends with Flip to Classic Hits
Cumulus Media today flipped Alternative "101.9 The End" KENZ-FM, Salt Lake City, to "Classic Hits 101.9" under Operations Manager Sue Kelley, who also assumes programming duties for the new Classic Hits station. She replaces Tysen Webb, who remains with the Salt Lake City cluster in another position. The syndicated "Bob and Tom" will air in mornings from 5-9am replacing Jimmy Chunga, who exits. His last show aired this morning before two hours of stunting began, and then the launch of the new format and identity. Melissa Snow remains in place 9am-3pm, as does Bret "The Coach" Connor 3-7pm and Jared 7pm-12midnight. The new Classic Hits station, playing continuous music until Monday morning when the new line-up starts, is online here. Reports from Salt Lake City say this is the first of several changes planned at the cluster, which may explain Webb's undefined new position there. There's speculation that Active Rock "94.9 Z-Rock" KHTB-FM will soon launch a new format that will feature an expanded Rock selection, including some of what "The End" has featured from the Alternative subdivision. Other speculation, however, is the coming change at KHTB-FM will be to a full Alternative format, although somewhat different from "The End" - possibly as "Radio 94.9" with the branding type that other Alternative stations now use. The latter possibility is seen as more likely now by several knowledgeable observers. Robin Thicke Sues Over Claims Against 'Blurred Lines'
Robin Thicke is going to court to protect his Number One radio pop music hit "Blurred Lines" from Marvin Gaye's relatives and Funkadelic's rights-owners, who claim the song blurs lines between two others. MHBC's "Total Popular Music" has already named the song the official "TPM Super Summer Song of 2013." Thicke, along with Pharrell Williams and Clifford Harris Jr., filed the lawsuit Thursday against Gaye's family and Bridgeport Music, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The two defendants in the case have threatened legal action and want a monetary settlement over what they say are similarities between "Blurred Lines" and songs they own. Bridgeport Music owns some of 70s band Funkadelic's compositions and claims "Blurred Lines" is similar to the band's "Sexy Ways" song. The Gaye family say Thicke's hit sounds the same as Marvin Gaye's "Got to Give it Up," a comparison which has previously been made by several major music publications. According to the suit, the "Gaye defendants are claiming ownership of an entire genre, as opposed to a specific work." Thicke and his co-plaintiffs pre-empted a suit from Bridgeport and the Gaye family to settle the rights and obligations of each party, reports THR. The lawsuit says Thicke, Williams and Harris Jr. have "the utmost respect for and admiration of Marvin Gaye, Funkadelic and their musical legacies," but must "reluctantly file this action in the face of multiple adverse claims from alleged successors in interest to those artists."
Florida Lawyer Sues SiriusXM Over Robocalling
SiriusXM is being sued by South Florida attorney Yechezkel Rodal in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida, alleging that the company wouldn't stop robocalling him even after he complained and the company told him it would stop. Rodal is suing under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act, alleging that he leased a car in January with a three-month trial subscription to SiriusXM and never signed any agreement with the satcaster, nor provided his phone number, but then began receiving calls on his cellphone to get him to subscribe. He says he sent a letter to ask them to stop, and received a call informing him that the company had received the letter and the calls would stop, but the calls began again May 23 and continued through the first two weeks of June. He's asking for $1,500 in statutory damages for each willful violation and $500 for each negligent violation, as well as an injunction preventing further calls. And he's asking for a jury trial on the suit. Max Media Sells Six Arkansas Stations
Virginia-based Max Media is selling six stations in Arkansas. EAB of Russellville has agreed to acquire the stations from Max Media. Terms are not disclosed, but as always we'll get that info when the deal is filed with the FCC. Included in the sale are 1.45kw KCJC-FM (102.3) and 5kw KCAB-AM (980), both in Dardanelle; 6kw KWKK-FM (100.9), Russellville; 4.1kw KVLD-FM (99.3), Atkins; and 0.25kw KVOM-AM (800) and 6kw KVOM-FM (101.7), both in Morrilton. Max Media is based in Virginia Beach, and also owns radio stations in Virginia, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Illinois, Missouri and North Carolina, with and television stations in Montana and Kentucky. Max Media is also the operating partner in a joint venture that owns television stations in Puerto Rico and Maine. EAB of Russellville is an Arkansas-based company headed by Bobby Caldwell. Caldwell owns various radio stations throughout the state of Arkansas. Kalil & Co. represented the seller and Sunbelt Media Inc. represented the buyer in the Arkansas transaction. NextRadio for FM on Mobile Devices Is Here: Jeff Smulyan: 'Today We Set A New Course As An Industry'
Sprint announces that the NextRadio app for FM radio on smartphones is now being rolled out, and that Sprint will begin installing the application in a broad array of wireless devices over the coming years, allowing consumers to listen to their local radio stations on their smartphones. Emmis Communications, which has been at the forefront of developing the app and working for its inclusion in wireless devices, especially cellphones, says coordination by radio broadcasters has led to the announcement of the NextRadio roll out. Says Emmis Chairman/CEO Jeff Smulyan, "Today we set a new course as an industry, one that will bring exciting audience and advertiser engagement opportunities. This announcement is a credit to the entire radio industry, which has unified to make this happen." NextRadio delivers a highly interactive artist and ad experience to FM-enabled smartphones. Data for the app is supplied by TagStation, the cloud-based engine that offers stations the ability to upload branding images that will display as default artwork, as well as call letters, format, station name and slogan. This basic, free level of station integration is open to all radio stations and creates a compelling experience within the app as the user is able to quickly associate their local stations with familiar visuals while browsing. If a station does not register at TagStation, listeners using the NextRadio app will still be able to hear the radio station but may not see the station’s logo displayed. "Whether the station is large market, medium market, small market, commercial or non-commercial, this free service will provide listeners with a visual radio listening experience on the FM-enabled smartphone. Radio stations no longer have to add the cost of Internet Streaming to get local FM radio on a mobile device," says Emmis Chief Technology Officer and NextRadio President Paul Brenner. "Adding full TagStation capabilities allows radio stations to offer listeners features like album art and artist information, listener feedback, song tagging capabilities, enhanced advertising options and social integration, which dramatically enhance the listening experience." Smulyan says that more than 1,500 stations signed up for the free services offered by TagStation and thousands more are expected following today’s product launch. Entercom Boston VP of Programming Jason Wolfe Exiting
Entercom Boston Vice President of Programming Jason Wolfe has announced that he is exiting the company after more than 20 years at Sports Talk WEEI and News Talk WRKO-AM. His replacement will be announced shortly, says Entercom in a news release. While Entercom suggests that Wolfe has decided to "move on," Wolfe writes on his Facebook page that he's being replaced because Entercom feels its time for a change. "They have an obligation to do what they feel is in the best interest of the station and the company and I respect that, and accept it." Wolfe was 24 years old when he started at WEEI, 22 years ago. Says Entercom Boston Market Manager Jeff Brown, “Jason Wolfe has defined sports talk radio, not only in Boston, but around the country as well. There are very few people who have influenced an industry like Jason has. From his work with the Jimmy Fund and the Red Sox's historic championship run to WRKO's engagement with politics, Jason’s behind-the-scenes work has made an impact few people will ever understand. We thank Jason for all his hard work, dedication to Entercom, and his commitment to the Boston community.” Wolfe is quoted in the Entercom news release as saying, “Being involved in the growth of WEEI has been a tremendous honor. WEEI went from a single radio station, to a regional sports network, added a world class digital platform because the demand for our content is so strong; and today, is one of the biggest radio brands in any format, anywhere in the country. We were #1 for six straight years through the fall of 2008. We’ve won four Marconi Awards and have given back so much to the community, helping to raise millions and millions of dollars for charity, including over $31 million for the Jimmy Fund. I couldn't be more proud to have played a role in all of the station's success. I am thankful to everyone at Entercom for all they’ve done to support me, and I wish them all the best in the future. It's now time for me to move on and begin the next chapter of my career."
Spanish Broadcasting System Q2 Revenues Up 4%
Spanish Broadcasting System reports second quarter net revenue increased 4% to $36.067 million. SBS says radio revenue is up 6% year-to-year to $32.247 million, while television is off by 12% to $3.82 million.
The radio gain is primarily attributed to national, barter, and interactive sales plus special events revenue. "Our radio segment net revenues increased $2.0 million or 6%, primarily due to national sales, barter sales, interactive sales and special events revenue. The increase in national sales was mainly in our New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco markets. The increases in barter and interactive sales occurred throughout most of our markets. The special events revenue increase took place in our San Francisco, Miami and Los Angeles markets," says SBS in a news release. "We generated healthy gains in our operating profitability during the second quarter, leading to a 26 percent increase in our OIBDA for the first half of the year," says SBS Chairman and CEO Raul Alarcon. "We are encouraged with the overall advertising environment across our markets, and we are confident in our ability to continue to convert our audience shares into financial gains. We are benefiting from the strategic investments we have made in our content, distribution and sales resources. At the same time, we have maintained a disciplined approach to managing our expenses, as reflected in our improving profitability. As advertisers increasingly recognize Spanish-language media as a highly effective channel to promote their brands, we remain focused on leveraging our diversified media platform to garner a greater share of advertising budgets."
Chicago's WGN-AM Removes Mike McConnell from On Air
Tribune Talk WGN-AM, Chicago, has pulled midday host Mike McConnell off the air, and assigned him an online-only 10am-2pm show. A podcast is being made available of the online show later in the same day. The buzz from the Windy City says the station would have preferred to totally oust McConnell, but because of a long term contract signed by the former management of the station three years ago, would have had to pay him for not working at all. The online show was then adopted by current management as an "experimental" way to go. So far, no replacement for McConnell on "720 WGN Radio" has been announced, with a variety of guest hosts airing. Among those is Steve Cochran, recently hired by the station but not yet assigned a fulltime show. We've previously reported speculation that Cochran will be named midday host on WGN-AM when a new schedule for the Talk station is soon announced.
SiriusXM Acquiring Agero's Connected Vehicle Services Business
Sirius XM Radio is buying the connected vehicle services business of Agero for $530 million in cash. The connected vehicle unit of Agero provides telematics services, offering safety, security and convenience services for drivers and end-to-end, turnkey solutions for automakers. Following the acquisition, SiriusXM will provide connected vehicle services to more automotive manufacturers -- including Acura, BMW, Honda, Hyundai, Infiniti, Lexus, Nissan and Toyota -- than any other telematics provider. Says SiriusXM CEO Jim Meyer, "The acquisition of Agero's connected vehicle business is a natural fit for Sirius XM. As the world's leading provider of in-vehicle subscription services, SiriusXM is uniquely positioned to offer world-class end-to-end telematics services. The transaction accelerates SiriusXM's development in architecture supporting connected vehicle services, as well as the ability to provide services over both satellite and cellular networks. Agero's connected vehicle team is known for their experience, innovation and technology, and we look forward to welcoming them to SiriusXM as we work to capture the significant growth opportunities in connected vehicle services." The transaction is subject to the expiration or early termination of the Hart-Scott-Rodino antitrust waiting period and other customary closing conditions. The transaction is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2013. Morgan Stanley acted as financial advisor to SiriusXM in connection with this transaction. Arbitron Releases 'Hispanic Radio Today 2013' 95% of Hispanics Tune to Radio in Average Week
According to Arbitron's just released "Hispanic Radio Today 2013" -- "How Hispanic America Listens to Radio" -- offering an overview of Hispanic radio listenership in the U.S., about 95% of Hispanic consumers tune to the radio in an average week, underscoring a strong relationship with an important and growing listener segment. Radio listenership among Hispanic consumers is bigger than other ethnic groups measured by Arbitron. Radio remains a reliable entertainment and information source for Hispanic listeners, regardless of their language preference, country of origin, age, gender, income, or listening location. Radio’s reach among 25-54 Hispanic listeners is even better, reaching nearly 97% of women 35-44 weekly. In an era where all consumers are presented with many media choices, time spent listening to radio among Hispanic persons is holding steady (and in some cases, increasing) in key demographics. This year’s Hispanic Radio Today has detailed analyses for the 12 most popular formats according to Average Quarter-Hour share, plus abbreviated analysis for five additional Spanish-language formats that achieve an AQH share of up to 2.0. For the first time, the study also shows the AQH proportion of language preference (English-dominant vs. Spanish-dominant) for each format. Some highlights of the formats in this year's study (listed in order of Average Quarter-Hour audience share and appearance in the study): Mexican Regional remains far and away the most popular choice of Hispanic listeners by nearly twice the share of the second-largest format. The format draws young listeners (mostly men) of Mexican descent and is a popular out-of-home listening choice. Spanish Contemporary/Spanish Hot Adult Contemporary is another strong out-of-home performer and is slightly more popular among women than men. A growing number of listeners to these formats comes from higher income households. Pop Contemporary Hit Radio (CHR), the No. 3 format among all audiences based on AQH, is similarly ranked among Hispanic listeners. Just like with the general market, Pop CHR is popular among Hispanic women, especially those who primarily speak English. Rhythmic Contemporary Hit Radio (CHR) remains the most ethnically-diverse format among all listeners and remains very popular among young Hispanic listeners. Listeners to this format are among the most tech-savvy in this study. Adult Contemporary/Soft Adult Contemporary’s share of audience tapered slightly this year, matching the format’s trend in the general market. It remains a strong midday performer and its listeners are well educated and live in high income households. Spanish Adult Hits, which tends to be most popular in Western markets, has nearly half of its audience between 35–54 years old. Country/New Country, America’s No. 1 format, continues to be a popular choice among English-dominant Hispanic listeners, especially women. Classic Hits remains most popular with men, particularly Spanish-dominant Hispanic men. News/Talk/Information and Talk/Personality feature the highest proportion of English-dominant Hispanic listeners. These listeners are also the best educated and live in the highest-income households of all formats in the study. Spanish Tropical, a popular choice of Hispanic listeners of Caribbean descent, saw a significant rebound in this year’s study. Hot Adult Contemporary (Hot AC) and Classic Rock make their debuts in this year’s Hispanic Radio Today Arbitron-Nielsen Merger Reportedly Hits Snags
Nielsen is running into rising regulatory static over its $1.26 billion deal for Arbriton, reports the New York Post. "Rather than wrapping up its months-long review of the deal as expected, the Federal Trade Commission is busy sending out additional requests for information, The Post has learned. The latest round of questionnaires went out to TV station owners that stand to be affected by the merger of the two measurement giants, according to sources." The report notes that the FTC will decide whether to let the deal go through or move to block it. It could also enter into a settlement with Nielsen, in which the company agrees to divest assets or make other changes to win approval for the deal. “If they’re still currently talking to sources, then it does make you wonder. It may be they’re thinking of whether there are remedies,” says Sally Hubbard, an antitrust lawyer and former assistant attorney general for New York. The FTC declined to comment. The FTC has already held up the deal once, after issuing a second request for information in March. Nielsen first announced it had signed a definitive agreement to acquire Arbitron for $48/share in cash last December. Nielsen said at the end of July that it expects to have an indication of where the merger stands by the end of this month. Nielsen CEO David Calhoun, speaking on a call with investors, said the company had complied with the FTC’s latest request for information and was just awaiting a signal. Paul McCartney Joins iHeartRadio Music Festival Lineup
Clear Channel Media and Entertainment today announced that legendary artist Paul McCartney has been added to the lineup for the iHeartRadio Music Festival, the two-day music event hosted by Ryan Seacrest at MGM Grand Las Vegas. Paul McCartney joins a lineup that includes Justin Timberlake, Katy Perry, J. McCartney has spent much of 2013 on his Out There tour, winning unprecedented praise wherever it goes, and is currently working on new material. "After only two years, the iHeartRadio Music Festival has attracted the biggest music artist in the world," says John Sykes, Co-executive Producer of the iHeartRadio Music Festival and President of Entertainment Enterprises, Clear Channel. "Having Paul join this year's already spectacular and diverse lineup heightens the excitement for what has become the most anticipated music festival of the year." Tom Poleman, Co-executive Producer and President of National Programming Platforms, Clear Channel Media and Entertainment, adds, "The addition of Paul McCartney to the lineup underscores the magnitude and diversity of the iHeartRadio Music Festival. There's no bigger icon in music."

Also, ABC's "Samantha Who?" and "Comics Unleashed," Comedy Central's "Live at Gotham" and VH1's reality show "Let's Talk about Pep." He also was the co-host of Hughley's former radio show on "98.7 Kiss FM" WRKS-FM, New York. eMarketer: Music Goes Mobile as More Smartphone Users Stream It Over 99% of Mobile Music Listeners Listen on Smartphones
More than one in five Americans will listen to music on their mobile phones this year, eMarketer estimates, after usage nearly doubled in 2012. Listening to music on their phones is now a regular activity for more than 70 million people in the U.S., and double-digit growth is expected to continue through 2015, when well over a third of all mobile phone users will participate. Included in this figure are mobile phone users who listen to streaming music, such as via Pandora, Spotify or another digital radio station, as well as those who download music directly onto their phone, via the iTunes Store or a similar service. eMarketer’s forecast does not include listeners who only sideload music from their PC to their phone. The inclusion of downloads to mobile means the figures are not directly comparable to eMarketer’s estimate of digital radio listeners, which includes listeners to digital broadcasts of terrestrial radio stations, digital-only stations or podcasts. eMarketer estimates that 147 million internet users will listen to such content at least monthly this year, or roughly six in 10 internet users. Next year, participation will approach half of the overall population. A rough comparison indicates that this year, nearly half of all digital radio listeners will likely listen to streaming music on their mobile phones -- a practice helped along by the rise of smartphones. Smartphone music listeners will account for 99.2% of all mobile phone music listeners this year. Music listening penetration is also higher among smartphone users (49.8%) than among mobile phone users (28.5%). eMarketer bases its estimates of digital music listening on the analysis of survey and traffic data from research firms and regulatory agencies, historical trends, company-specific data, and demographic and socioeconomic factors. GroupM Revises Global 2013 Ad Spend Forecast Downward U.S. Ad Spending Now Expected to Rise Only 1.8%
GroupM has revised its biannual worldwide measured advertising spending forecast for 2013 downward to $507 billion reflecting a 3.4% growth rate compared to the 4.5% rate predicted last December. The revised forecast is published in "This Year, Next Year" -- which also includes a final tabulation for 2012, revealing advertising spending in measured media hit $490 billion, a 3.6% increase over spending in 2011. Also, in its first prediction for 2014, the 75-country forecast predicted that global ad spending will increase 5.1% compared to 2013, representing $533 billion. It was prepared by GroupM Futures Director Adam Smith. For the U.S. market, the report says advertising investment in measured media will grow only 1.8% in 2013 to $156 billion, up from $153 billion in 2012. For 2014, the forecast is a 2.9% hike in spending to $161 billion. "We estimate marginal growth in advertising spending in 2014 on a comparable component basis," sayd GroupM’s Chief Investment Officer for North America Rino Scanzoni. "However the Sochi Winter Olympic games will add an additional 50 basis points to the growth rate with funding coming primarily from existing budgets." Regarding worldwide spending, Smith says the downward revision to growth in 2013 ad spending could be attributed primarily to continued economic discord in the Eurozone -- the same reason that led GroupM to revise its 2012 forecast downward. Smith says the "Eurozone periphery" is "once again the main reason for the decline." He adds, "Stabilization is elusive. We now expect this group to record an 11% fall in measured advertising in 2013." The report also forecasts that investment in digital media will account for 19% of measured ad spending globally this year ($95 billion). For 2014, digital ad spend is expected to rise by 14% to occupy a 20% share of ad budgets. Entercom Promotes Eight to Vice President

Clear Channel Media and Entertainment names Breeanna Malik VP of Sales for the six-station Houston cluster. She joins that group from Clear Channel San Antonio, where she most recently was Market President. She'd been in San Antonio for more than five years, previously serving as Director of Sales and General Sales Manager. Malik has more than 16 years of experience in radio sales and marketing, "serving the industry as an efficient leader, manager and strategist," says CCME. "Houston is a thriving market and Breeanna, as the former Market President of San Antonio, brings unique strategic insight while also keeping many of her client relationships intact within Texas," says CCME SVP of Operations Kelly Kibler Owens. "We are thrilled to have her on the Houston team." Malik tells us, "My true passion is leading sales organizations and building new client partnerships through Clear Channel's integrated multi-platform programs. I am honored and excited to join the Clear Channel Media and Entertainment Houston team." Former Spanish Broadcasting System Chicago Account Executive Daniel Turpin has filed a notice of voluntary dismissal of his age discrimination suit against SBS. He'd been an AE with Regional Mexican "La Ley 107.9" WLEY-FM. The notice, filed in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, does not indicate a reason for dismissing the case with prejudice, although it notes that SBS "has not answered" Turpin's complaint or "filed a motion for dismissal or for summary judgment." The complaint, filed in May, alleged that the 53-year-old Turpin, who worked for SBS from 2001, was abruptly fired on June 21 of 2012, despite having met or exceeded sales goals. The complaint alleged that a new, younger sales manager, Jeff Delgado, "began to make improper, demeaning, and discriminatory age-related comments to and about" Turpin. Turpin alleged that Delgado's "discriminatory" comments centered on Turpin's age, and that he was going to have hip-replacement surgery. Turpin said he had met with the HR, after which Delgado began to demand inclusion in meetings with Turpin's clients and excluded the AE from meetings and business functions. That was followed, said the suit, by management claims of "billing irregularities" and that he'd been "overpaid" commissions. He was fired, then obtained a right-to-sue letter from the EEOC earlier this year. While no reason is offered for the dismissal of the suit, speculation is that SBS offered, and Turpin received, a settlement from SBS. Radio Vet Jeff Schmidt Joins Sparque
Radio sales and management veteran Jeff Schmidt joins Chris Lytle's Sparque Inc. as EVP and a partner, to "help lead" Sparque "back to its radio sales training roots." Schmidt began his radio career with Midwest Family and most recently was Market Manager for Cumulus in the Oshkosh and Green Bay markets. Schmidt, and his wife Carolyn, have assumed partnership roles in Sparque. "We are happy to re-focus on the Radio industry," says Lytle. "With the publication of 'The Accidental Salesperson,' a lot of industries discovered a new sales guru. Our business grew in many new directions.
FCC's Ajit Pai to Speak at 2013 National Radio Award Luncheon
FCC Commissioner Ajit Pai will speak at the Radio Show Luncheon, held Friday, September 20. The luncheon will take place during the 2013 Radio Show, jointly produced by the NAB and RAB, taking place September 18-20 in Orlando. Pai will share his views on communications policy and how it affects free, local radio broadcasting. He will also speak about his efforts to revitalize the AM band. The Radio Luncheon will also feature the presentation of the National Radio Award to Hubbard Radio Chair Ginny Morris. Pai joined the FCC as Commissioner in May 2012 "and is focusing on creating a regulatory environment in which competition and innovation can flourish, for the benefit of American consumers." Between 2007 and 2011, Pai held several positions in the FCC’s Office of General Counsel, including Deputy General Counsel. Prior to joining the FCC, he was a partner in the Communications Practice at Jenner & Block LLP and Associate General Counsel at Verizon Communications Inc. He also held positions in the United States Department of Justice’s Antitrust Division and the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee. NPR Updates Website Hompage with New Look and Experience
NPR has re-launched its homepage at NPR.org with a new look and audience experience, making it "out of the box" and "responsive." NPR tells us it's now "a robust, redesigned homepage that showcases the best of NPR, combined with a fully responsive design that optimizes for any screen. Just as it is on the radio, the new NPR web experience is one of discovery and surprise. NPR's distinctive storytelling is presented in a highly accessible, scrolling collection that offers deeper navigation and integrated, one-touch listening." We're also told that the redesigned homepage and story pages adapt to any size browser, from large desktop screens all the way down to Google glasses." NPR.org says the new homepage "now offers a more curated, coherent and rich experience for NPR's monthly digital audience of 23 million. The clean design reduces clutter and deepens engagement by doing away with newspaper-like grids, opting instead for a center collection of stories and top-of-the-page navigation that remains visible with scrolling. The homepage engages audiences to select their path: once a visitor reaches the last story in view, they can choose to load more stories from one of NPR's main topic areas of news, arts & life, books and music." Says NPR Chief Content Officer Kinsey Wilson, "Our online audience is engaging with NPR on a growing number of devices, from small-screen phones to big-screen TVs. With this redesign, we're able to give the audience the optimum NPR experience no matter where they encounter us."

SiriusXM Launches 'Piolin Radio' with Eddie 'Piolin' Sotelo
SiriusXM announces that Spanish-language radio personality Eddie "Piolin" Sotelo will launch a new entertainment channel exclusively on SiriusXM, anchored by his own daily morning show, "El Show de Piolin." A news release from the satcaster says, "Piolin, credited with popularizing the Spanish-language morning drive format in major Hispanic markets, will now have his first true national platform, reconnecting with his massive base of loyal fans while reaching new listeners nationwide who have heretofore been unable to hear his compelling, entertaining, and unpredictable style of radio. The addition of Piolin solidifies the SiriusXM Latino suite of channels as the most comprehensive lineup of Latino programming in radio today." Says Sotelo, "I am honored SiriusXM believes in me. As I tell my listeners, 'We came to succeed.' And now, as we step up to a new level, I will be doing that on the biggest radio platform possible. I can't wait to fly free and for the first time be truly available coast-to-coast. I am excited that my listeners will be able to tune in to Piolin Radio at home, in the car or anywhere mobile. I am looking forward to reconnecting with my fans and reaching out to new listeners everywhere across the country." Sotelo abruptly exited his syndicated Univision morning show July 22, and then dealt with allegations of sexual harassment lodged against him by former co-worker Alberto "Beto" Cortez.
Radio One Reports Q2 Net Revenues Up 13%
Radio One reports second quarter net revenue up 13 percent to $119.6 million, but says "radio advertising markets have been choppy." The revenue increase is attributed primarily to a timing difference of Reach Media's annual cruise event as well as revenue improvements in both the Cable Television and Internet segments. Station operating income was approximately $45.7 million, an increase of 10.4 percent from a year ago. Operating income was approximately $18.4 million for the quarter, compared to operating income of $21.5 million in Q2 2012. Radio One took a $14.2 million net loss in Q2, compared to net income of $42.7 million a year ago.
Gary Burns: New Arbitron TLR Policy Unfair
While many non-subscribing broadcasters are upset with Arbitron's recently announced new Total Line Reporting policy that's set for 2014, none is more upset than small radio group owner, 3 Daughters Media CEO Gary Burns (as we first reported August 2). Currently stations simulcasting 100% of their programming and commercials are eligible for combined reporting regardless of subscriber status, but starting next year Arbitron will limit such TLR only to subscribers. Burns has now written to Arbitron CEO Sean Creamer, and filed his complaint with the change with the FCC, FTC and DOJ. Burns tell Creamer, "I take strong exception to the recently announced change in policy by Arbitron as it pertains to Total Line Reporting of radio listening, which as of 2014, will only apply to stations that pay for and subscribe to the Arbitron service. Application of the proposed rule will result in different methodology for stations in the same survey and will change the ranking of stations. The stations most likely to incur damages as a result of this new policy are stations with limited coverage, and stations owned by small business and minorities. Measurement of radio listening in metro markets should be subject to the same methodology and rules for every station qualified to be in the measured market."
EMF Paying $20.25 Million for Merlin Media's WWIQ-FM/Philadelphia
EMF is paying $20.25 million to purchase Merlin Media's Conservative Talk "IQ 106.9" WWIQ-FM, Philadelphia (licensed to Camden, New Jersey). That's according to the contract attached to paperwork filed with the FCC. Randy Michaels' Chicago-based Merlin Media paid $22.5 million for the station in December 2011 when Merlin purchased the former WKDN-FM from Family Radio. Educational Media Foundation will use the 106.9 FM signal to bring its "K-Love" Contemporary Christian music format to the Philadelphia market. After the EMF-Merlin deal was announced (but minus a price tag), K-Love President and CEO Mike Novak told us, "All of us at K-Love are excited to have worked out a deal with Merlin Media for the purchase of WWIQ, 106.9 FM. To be able to share the Gospel and work hand-in-hand with listeners in the New Jersey and Philadelphia areas is such a blessing. We can't wait." They will only have to wait until the FCC approves the transaction, which is expected to come rather quickly. EMF's "growing portfolio" already includes radio stations in New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Denver, and more -- potentially reaching an estimated 14 million listeners weekly. EMF is also expected to air its "Air1" format on the HD2 multicast channel of its new Philadelphia station, although that has yet to be formally announced.
Pandora Responds to ASCAP Petition to Deny,
Pandora has filed an FCC response to ASCAP's petition to deny Pandora's purchase of Hot AC "Mix 102.7" KXMZ-FM, Box Elder-Rapid City, South Dakota. Pandora Media, which is purchasing its first over-the-air station from Connoisseur Media, tells the FCC that ASCAP's filing is "a blatant attempt to draw the FCC into a private dispute regarding music performance royalties, a dispute over which the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York has exclusive jurisdiction." Pandora writes, "ASCAP is trying to entice the FCC into a music royalty fight," while rejecting ASCAP's characterization of it as incapable of serving the community. Pandora says it is "uniquely situated to serve those needs and is committed to continue and expand upon KXMZ's public service after closing." The filing also called ASCAP's charge that Pandora had not fully disclosed its ownership and may have hidden excessive foreign control "meritless" and "based on a superficial analysis" of its stockholders. Pandora adds that ASCAP's own analysis shows that Pandora is under the 20% threshold. Pandora also is challenging ASCAP's standing to challenge the sale, noting that the music licensing organization is not a competitor or resident of the area and supplied an illegible declaration from a South Dakota resident, that Pandora says does not determine whether ASCAP is representing a local interest. Boston's 'Magic 106.7' Names David O'Leary Morning Co-Host
Greater Media AC "Magic 106.7" WMJX-FM, Boston, names David O'Leary as morning co-host, teaming with Candy O'Terry, starting August 19. O'Leary has been heard on Boston radio for over 25 years, including a time as morning host on sister WBOS-FM. "Several good candidates surfaced during our extensive talent search, and after careful consideration, David O'Leary stood out as the natural choice to best help propel Magic's morning show into the future," says Greater Media Boston Director of Programming Cadillac Jack McCartney. "David's experience, warmth, and great judgment with respect to content are just some of the reasons I'm thrilled to once again promote from within our valuable roster of 'A' talent here at Greater Media Boston. The combination of David and Candy promises to be an exciting new chapter for Morning Magic!" O'Leary tells us, "I couldn't be happier to be a part of the Magic air staff. This station, in this city, working with a team I know and respect. It's a dream come true!" D.L. Hughley Signs with Reach Media for Syndicated Afternoon Show
Reach Media makes it official, that comedian, author, actor, TV personality, and former radio host D.L. Hughley has signed to host a weekday afternoon show. A launch date will be announced. "The D.L. Hughley Show" will be a daily-themed, music-intensive afternoon drive program, 3-7pm ET. Cumulus Media Networks will partner with Reach Media in affiliation and other aspects of the show. Says Hughley, "I'm very excited to get back to radio and it couldn't have come at a better time. I think radio fits my sensibility. I want to be fast, I want to be funny, I want to be topical. I want to make people laugh a lot and think a little. Some people want to push the envelope -- I want to see if I can singe it a little." Reach Media CEO David Kantor tells us, "D.L. is the right personality to provide a new style of content in afternoon drive time. The D.L. Hughley Show will be engaging and fun, along with great music." Hughley established himself as a stand-up comedian with the Original Kings of Comedy Tour and a subsequent movie release. He went on to have a television show, "The Hughleys," and followed that up with a book, comedy specials, and television appearances. Hughley has also served as host of a talk show on CNN. He also hosted mornings for 13 months at the now defunct Urban AC "98.7 Kiss FM" New York, 2009-2010. Carolina Panthers Extend with WBT-AM-FM
The Carolina Panthers have announced the extension of a long-time partnership with Greater Media’s News Talk WBT-AM-FM, Charlotte, North Carolina. Having served as the radio flagship of the Carolina for 13 of the team’s 18-year history, WBT-AM-FM and the Panthers have agreed on a three-year extension to keep the radio broadcasts there through 2015. "With such a long and successful history between our two organizations, we are excited about continuing to look for new ways to improve our broadcasts," says David Langton, Executive Radio Producer.
ESPN Dallas/KESN-FM Extends with Dallas Mavericks
"ESPN Dallas 103.3 FM" KESN-FM and the Dallas Mavericks have a five-year deal to extend their radio play-by-play agreement. "ESPN Dallas 103.3" -- which debuted in April 2001 -- has broadcast Mavericks games since Fall 2001. The station and team will now be together through the 2017-18 season, making this the longest running pro sports team radio rights agreement in Dallas. "We are thrilled to continue to be the radio home of the Dallas Mavericks," says ESPN Dallas General Manager Pete Dits. "Our relationship has grown over the years, and together we give Dallas Mavericks fans the best overall coverage of the team and a well-produced game broadcast." The new agreement calls for a continuation of "The Rick Carlisle Show" as well as a player show to air on KESN-FM, and the continuation of the annual Mavstoberfest event that allows up to 1000 ESPN Dallas and Dallas Mavericks winners passes to a free autograph signing with the entire team as well as a free open-to-the-public scrimmage. Says Maverick's owner Mark Cuban, "There is no better radio network for the Dallas Mavericks than ESPN Dallas. They have been our home for 12 seasons and our fans know where to find the Mavs on the radio. We are thrilled to be with ESPN Dallas for many more seasons to come." Scott Vowinkle Joins Journal Omaha as Radio GSM
Scott Vowinkle joins Journal Broadcast Group's Omaha Operations as General Sales Manager beginning August 15. Vowinkle most recently was Regional Sales Director for ApartmentGuide.com, a print, Internet and mobile service for Texas renters and home buyers. He previously has been VP of Business Development for the RAB and a VP/GM for the Hispanic Broadcasting Corp. "Scott is a veteran media executive with significant radio and digital sales experience," says Journal Omaha VP and General Manager Christopher Sehring. Vowinkle will be sharing management responsibilities for Journal's Omaha radio cluster with GSM Kris Chistiansen, devoting his primary focus to leading the sales efforts for "Z-92" KEZO-FM, "CD105.9" KKCD-FM, and "590 ESPN" KXSP-AM. United Stations Radio Networks (USRN) expands its "Phantom Producer" radio imaging service to the Mainstream Rock format. The move brings the online production app to its seventh radio format, but marking the first time that Phantom Producer is available to a format that specifically targets younger men. Phantom Producer has been previously available to programmers and production talent serving the CHR, AC, Hot AC, Classic Rock, Classic Hits and Country formats. The move into Mainstream Rock is effective immediately. Since its introduction in 2010, Phantom Producer has been giving users the ability to audition, mix and download their own customized or generic sweepers, jingles, audio links and other interstitial production elements via a password-protected website. Recently, "music hooks" were added to the service which expanded the creative options for affiliates. To create Mainstream Rock content for Phantom Producer, the team has retained Jerry Rohira as Rock Imaging Producer. Rohira is well known in the Rock format for several years at "94.5 The Buzz" in Houston. He was recruited by SiriusXM as Creative Director and to work on major initiatives involving Paul McCartney, Eminem, Bruce Springsteen and others. Rohira also helped launch "The Howard Stern Show" on satellite radio and was Creative Services Director for the show during its first year there. Most recently, Rohira was VP of Production for Merlin Media's News Network, before its demise. CBS 'Radio.com' August 17 Vegas 'SPF' Set for Streaming
We suppose the graphic actually says it all. CBS Radio's answer to Clear Channel's iHeartRadio (on a somewhat smaller scale), Radio.com, will stream the upcoming Summer Pool Fiesta (SPF) at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas. The CBS Radio/Radio.com "SPF" will feature Robin Thicke, Jason Derulo, and Sammy Adams, and is set for August 17, starting at 8:30pm PT, which according to our own exclusive calculations means it will be streamed at 11:30pm ET. (Do Jay and Dave know about this?) "With the Las Vegas Strip as the background, the luxury resort’s Boulevard pool will play host to the star-studded event. Fans can watch a live broadcast of SPF streaming on Radio.com" said the July 22 initial announcement, as we reported here. The formal announcement from CBS Radio told us, "CBS Radio stations nationwide will award hundreds of listeners complimentary access to the show, with many receiving a trip to Las Vegas with superior travel and accommodations at The Cosmopolitan, and exclusive access on-site at SPF." Read more about "SPF Powered By Radio.com" from CBS Radio here. Slacker Adds 'ESPN The Magazine Radio'
ESPN Audio and ESPN The Magazine have launched "ESPN The Magazine Radio" on Slacker. We're told it offers music and sports features from ESPN The Magazine. The initial launch of the station features songs from the personal playlists of the "Body Issue" athletes including Colin Kaepernick, Elena Hight, Sydney Leroux, and Kenneth “Manimal” Faried. Related audio elements from the athletes themselves are showcased on the site in between songs as well as magazine photography. As each issue is released, the station will expand to showcase a growing playlist of elite athletes, says ESPN Audio. The channel is exclusive to Slacker. Meanwhile, last night Michael Savage, whose show is now syndicated by Cumulus, told his listeners that he expects to take over Hannity's time slot by the end of the year. Savage said, “I predict, right here, right now, that I Michael Savage and the Savage Nation is going to take over the Sean Hannity Show time slot by the end of the year. I am the heir apparent to afternoon drive on the east coast and around America on Cumulus stations, which have the most powerful stations in the radio world.” Following up on that, Politico says, "Sources familiar with the negotiations confirmed that Cumulus and Hannity were expected to end their affiliation." The report also tells us that neither Hannity nor Limbaugh's spokesperson responded to a request for comment late Thursday night.
McConnell has been off the air at "720 WGN Radio" since the end of July, but until now listeners were told he "was on vacation." He revealed the new online show on his Facebook page: "Hello friends, We're starting something new today. A PODCAST! Some of the show will be prerecorded and some live. The live portion will stream at 11:00am cdt and your calls are welcome. The phone number is WGN's old number 312-591-7200. When you call you will go directly on hold and hear the stream. There is no call screener and for now I'm experimenting with how to best put it together." You might remember that three years ago, under Tribune CEO Randy Michaels and WGN Radio Program Director Kevin Metheny, McConnell was lured away from middays at WLW-AM, Cincinnati, where he aired for close to 25 years. But after Michaels and Metheny were both gone, McConnell became a subject of speculation for the Chicago station, which recently has been working to overhaul its programming. Others recently heard on-air in the midday slot have included husband and wife Bob Sirott and Marianne Murciano, overnight host Bill Leff, and frequent fill-in host and market veteran Pete McMurray.

The on-demand specialty shows will be hosted by NBC Sports Radio anchor and Rotoworld contributor Kay Adams, a fantasy sports expert. In addition to her work with NBC Sports Radio and Rotoworld, she also hosts the weekly show, "Livin' the Fantasy" on SiriusXM Fantasy Sports Radio and has a social media following @HeyKayAdams. She also appears weekly on NBC Sports Network's "Fantasy Football Live -- Thursday Night!" Launching the week of August 26, the partnership will include live interviews on NBC Sports Radio throughout the NFL season with Rotoworld writers and talent, including Evan Silva, Adam Levitan, Pat Daugherty and Nick Mensio. Schmidt (picured right) adds, "This is a great opportunity to leverage Lytle's compelling content and my passion for training and developing Radio salespeople." Best-selling author and world-renown speaker Chris Lytle, 30-year sales veteran Jeff Schmidt, and a dedicated team of experienced sales coaches."
Remembering Kidd Kraddick

Says Radio One CEO/President Alfred Liggins, "Overall I am pleased with our Adjusted EBITDA growth of 19.5% for the quarter, which demonstrates the benefits of our diversification strategy. Radio advertising markets have been choppy, with a slowdown in June that took our core radio revenues from low single digit positive to a –0.6% finish. July core radio station net revenue was +5.0% and Q3 is currently pacing up low single digits. TV One posted robust revenue and Adjusted EBITDA growth, up approximately 17.0% and 22.3% respectively, and Household ratings in prime were up 15%. Our Interactive One business performed well, with positive Adjusted EBITDA of $507,000 compared to a loss of $475,000 for the same period last year, and remains on target to hit break-even for the year. The Tom Joyner Fantastic Voyage was a success, and helped propel Reach Media to a positive Adjusted EBITDA of approximately $1.9 million, which was a welcome turn-around from last year's comparable loss of $89,000."
