Arbitron Releases 'Hispanic Radio Today 2013'

95% of Hispanics Tune to Radio in Average Week

Hispanic Radio Today 2013

According to Arbitron's just released "Hispanic Radio Today 2013" -- "How Hispanic America Listens to Radio" -- offering an overview of Hispanic radio listenership in the U.S., about 95% of Hispanic consumers tune to the radio in an average week, underscoring a strong relationship with an important and growing listener segment. Radio listenership among Hispanic consumers is bigger than other ethnic groups measured by Arbitron. Radio remains a reliable entertainment and information source for Hispanic listeners, regardless of their language preference, country of origin, age, gender, income, or listening location. Radio’s reach among 25-54 Hispanic listeners is even better, reaching nearly 97% of women 35-44 weekly. In an era where all consumers are presented with many media choices, time spent listening to radio among Hispanic persons is holding steady (and in some cases, increasing) in key demographics. This year’s Hispanic Radio Today has detailed analyses for the 12 most popular formats according to Average Quarter-Hour share, plus abbreviated analysis for five additional Spanish-language formats that achieve an AQH share of up to 2.0. For the first time, the study also shows the AQH proportion of language preference (English-dominant vs. Spanish-dominant) for each format. Some highlights of the formats in this year's study (listed in order of Average Quarter-Hour audience share and appearance in the study): Mexican Regional remains far and away the most popular choice of Hispanic listeners by nearly twice the share of the second-largest format. The format draws young listeners (mostly men) of Mexican descent and is a popular out-of-home listening choice. Spanish Contemporary/Spanish Hot Adult Contemporary is another strong out-of-home performer and is slightly more popular among women than men. A growing number of listeners to these formats comes from higher income households. Pop Contemporary Hit Radio (CHR), the No. 3 format among all audiences based on AQH, is similarly ranked among Hispanic listeners. Just like with the general market, Pop CHR is popular among Hispanic women, especially those who primarily speak English. Rhythmic Contemporary Hit Radio (CHR) remains the most ethnically-diverse format among all listeners and remains very popular among young Hispanic listeners. Listeners to this format are among the most tech-savvy in this study. Adult Contemporary/Soft Adult Contemporary’s share of audience tapered slightly this year, matching the format’s trend in the general market. It remains a strong midday performer and its listeners are well educated and live in high income households. Spanish Adult Hits, which tends to be most popular in Western markets, has nearly half of its audience between 35–54 years old. Country/New Country, America’s No. 1 format, continues to be a popular choice among English-dominant Hispanic listeners, especially women. Classic Hits remains most popular with men, particularly Spanish-dominant Hispanic men. News/Talk/Information and Talk/Personality feature the highest proportion of English-dominant Hispanic listeners. These listeners are also the best educated and live in the highest-income households of all formats in the study. Spanish Tropical, a popular choice of Hispanic listeners of Caribbean descent, saw a significant rebound in this year’s study. Hot Adult Contemporary (Hot AC) and Classic Rock make their debuts in this year’s Hispanic Radio Today

Arbitron-Nielsen Merger Reportedly Hits Snags

Nielsen-Arbitron

Nielsen is running into rising regulatory static over its $1.26 billion deal for Arbriton, reports the New York Post. "Rather than wrapping up its months-long review of the deal as expected, the Federal Trade Commission is busy sending out additional requests for information, The Post has learned. The latest round of questionnaires went out to TV station owners that stand to be affected by the merger of the two measurement giants, according to sources." The report notes that the FTC will decide whether to let the deal go through or move to block it. It could also enter into a settlement with Nielsen, in which the company agrees to divest assets or make other changes to win approval for the deal. “If they’re still currently talking to sources, then it does make you wonder. It may be they’re thinking of whether there are remedies,” says Sally Hubbard, an antitrust lawyer and former assistant attorney general for New York. The FTC declined to comment. The FTC has already held up the deal once, after issuing a second request for information in March. Nielsen first announced it had signed a definitive agreement to acquire Arbitron for $48/share in cash last December. Nielsen said at the end of July that it expects to have an indication of where the merger stands by the end of this month. Nielsen CEO David Calhoun, speaking on a call with investors, said the company had complied with the FTC’s latest request for information and was just awaiting a signal.

eMarketer: Music Goes Mobile as More Smartphone Users Stream It

Over 99% of Mobile Music Listeners Listen on Smartphones

eMarketer

More than one in five Americans will listen to music on their mobile phones this year, eMarketer estimates, after usage nearly doubled in 2012. Listening to music on their phones is now a regular activity for more than 70 million people in the U.S., and double-digit growth is expected to continue through 2015, when well over a third of all mobile phone users will participate. Included in this figure are mobile phone users who listen to streaming music, such as via Pandora, Spotify or another digital radio station, as well as those who download music directly onto their phone, via the iTunes Store or a similar service. eMarketer’s forecast does not include listeners who only sideload music from their PC to their phone. The inclusion of downloads to mobile means the figures are not directly comparable to eMarketer’s estimate of digital radio listeners, which includes listeners to digital broadcasts of terrestrial radio stations, digital-only stations or podcasts. eMarketer estimates that 147 million internet users will listen to such content at least monthly this year, or roughly six in 10 internet users. Next year, participation will approach half of the overall population. A rough comparison indicates that this year, nearly half of all digital radio listeners will likely listen to streaming music on their mobile phones -- a practice helped along by the rise of smartphones. Smartphone music listeners will account for 99.2% of all mobile phone music listeners this year. Music listening penetration is also higher among smartphone users (49.8%) than among mobile phone users (28.5%). eMarketer bases its estimates of digital music listening on the analysis of survey and traffic data from research firms and regulatory agencies, historical trends, company-specific data, and demographic and socioeconomic factors.

GroupM Revises Global 2013 Ad Spend Forecast Downward

U.S. Ad Spending Now Expected to Rise Only 1.8%

GroupM

GroupM has revised its biannual worldwide measured advertising spending forecast for 2013 downward to $507 billion reflecting a 3.4% growth rate compared to the 4.5% rate predicted last December. The revised forecast is published in "This Year, Next Year" -- which also includes a final tabulation for 2012, revealing advertising spending in measured media hit $490 billion, a 3.6% increase over spending in 2011. Also, in its first prediction for 2014, the 75-country forecast predicted that global ad spending will increase 5.1% compared to 2013, representing $533 billion. It was prepared by GroupM Futures Director Adam Smith. For the U.S. market, the report says advertising investment in measured media will grow only 1.8% in 2013 to $156 billion, up from $153 billion in 2012. For 2014, the forecast is a 2.9% hike in spending to $161 billion. "We estimate marginal growth in advertising spending in 2014 on a comparable component basis," sayd GroupM’s Chief Investment Officer for North America Rino Scanzoni. "However the Sochi Winter Olympic games will add an additional 50 basis points to the growth rate with funding coming primarily from existing budgets." Regarding worldwide spending, Smith says the downward revision to growth in 2013 ad spending could be attributed primarily to continued economic discord in the Eurozone -- the same reason that led GroupM to revise its 2012 forecast downward. Smith says the "Eurozone periphery" is "once again the main reason for the decline." He adds, "Stabilization is elusive. We now expect this group to record an 11% fall in measured advertising in 2013." The report also forecasts that investment in digital media will account for 19% of measured ad spending globally this year ($95 billion). For 2014, digital ad spend is expected to rise by 14% to occupy a 20% share of ad budgets.

Former AE's Age Discrimination Suit Against SBS Dismissed

SBS

Former Spanish Broadcasting System Chicago Account Executive Daniel Turpin has filed a notice of voluntary dismissal of his age discrimination suit against SBS. He'd been an AE with Regional Mexican "La Ley 107.9" WLEY-FM. The notice, filed in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, does not indicate a reason for dismissing the case with prejudice, although it notes that SBS "has not answered" Turpin's complaint or "filed a motion for dismissal or for summary judgment." The complaint, filed in May, alleged that the 53-year-old Turpin, who worked for SBS from 2001, was abruptly fired on June 21 of 2012, despite having met or exceeded sales goals. The complaint alleged that a new, younger sales manager, Jeff Delgado, "began to make improper, demeaning, and discriminatory age-related comments to and about" Turpin. Turpin alleged that Delgado's "discriminatory" comments centered on Turpin's age, and that he was going to have hip-replacement surgery. Turpin said he had met with the HR, after which Delgado began to demand inclusion in meetings with Turpin's clients and excluded the AE from meetings and business functions. That was followed, said the suit, by management claims of "billing irregularities" and that he'd been "overpaid" commissions. He was fired, then obtained a right-to-sue letter from the EEOC earlier this year. While no reason is offered for the dismissal of the suit, speculation is that SBS offered, and Turpin received, a settlement from SBS.

NPR tells us it's now "a robust, redesigned homepage that showcases the best of NPR, combined with a fully responsive design that optimizes for any screen. Just as it is on the radio, the new NPR web experience is one of discovery and surprise. NPR's distinctive storytelling is presented in a highly accessible, scrolling collection that offers deeper navigation and integrated, one-touch listening." We're also told that the redesigned homepage and story pages adapt to any size browser, from large desktop screens all the way down to Google glasses." NPR.org says the new homepage "now offers a more curated, coherent and rich experience for NPR's monthly digital audience of 23 million. The clean design reduces clutter and deepens engagement by doing away with newspaper-like grids, opting instead for a center collection of stories and top-of-the-page navigation that remains visible with scrolling. The homepage engages audiences to select their path: once a visitor reaches the last story in view, they can choose to load more stories from one of NPR's main topic areas of news, arts & life, books and music." Says NPR Chief Content Officer Kinsey Wilson, "Our online audience is engaging with NPR on a growing number of devices, from small-screen phones to big-screen TVs. With this redesign, we're able to give the audience the optimum NPR experience no matter where they encounter us."
