FCC Again Extends Indecency Comments Deadline

FCC

The FCC has again extended the deadline for public comments on whether the Commission should make changes to its current indecency policies or leave them as they are. After extending the initial deadline for comments from June 19 to July 18, the deadline is now being extended to August 2. The request to extend the deadline was filed by College Broadcasters, Inc., citing "the substantial number of comments filed in the proceeding, the scope and complexity of the Notice, and its own limited budgets and staffing constraints during the summer portion of the academic year." The FCC granted that request Friday.

Jorge Sedano Leaving Miami's 'Sports Radio 560' WQAM-AM

Jorge Sedano

Beasley "Sports Radio 560" WQAM-AM, Miami, Program Director and afternoon host Jorge Sedano will leave the station for ESPN. Several reports from the market say Sedano will leave the station to accept a multi-platform position at ESPN. We have confirmed that he's informed the station's staff of his impending departure. He's expected to start at ESPN in the fall. Sedano, a longtime staple of South Florida Sports Talk radio, moved from "790 The Ticket" WAXY-AM to WQAM-AM last August. The Sun Sentinel notes that Sedano's "year at WQAM saw a few major changes: Sedano fired midday host Dan Sileo in March after the former Miami Hurricane found national notoriety behind his UM football rants and sexist tweets towards Fox Sports broadcaster Erin Andrews. Sedano brought John Renshaw back to South Florida to fill Sileo's time slot." Last month, Sedano and WAXY-AM's Jon "Stugotz" Weiner guest hosted ESPN's FirstTake. Sedano, we've learned, will also exit his job at Sun Sports as the Miami Heat studio host for road broadcast games.

Bob Kernan Named VP/COO of jacAPPS

Bob Kernan

Internet business veteran Bob Kernen joins jacAPPS in the new position of VP/COO. Kernan has held digital and mobile management positions at Sharecare, Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, and A&E Television Networks. "Since its inception in 2008, jacAPPS has been on a consistent, upward trajectory," says jacAPPS President Paul Jacobs. "As our company nears its fifth anniversary, we needed a visionary with the right blend of media and web experience - and Bob’s the guy." Says Kernen, "I am excited to be joining jacAPPS and coming back to Motown at a time of such intense creativity and innovation. The jacAPPS team clearly saw over the horizon with the mobile app boom, and has built an amazing business in a short time. I am eager to work with this great team, and help them take it to the next level." Kernen, a Detroit area native, joins jacAPPS "after successful stints helping major brands develop and execute their digital strategies," says a news release. "He served as VP of Product Development and Data for Sharecare, creating a digital database, mobile applications, and a comprehensive back-end data system. Prior to that, he was the Co-Founder of GrokMusic, oversaw digital product development for Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, developed emerging media platforms for A&E Television Networks, and helped develop the digital strategies for Hearst’s Women.com and Microsoft’s Web TV Networks." jacAPPS is a sister company to Jacobs Media.

NuVoodoo Media Services Launches 'Real Research'

Carolyn Gilbert

NuVoodoo Media Services, founded by Carolyn Gilbert, announces the rollout of a new national music research product called "Real Research" -- which, we're told, offers radio stations "research and programming intelligence -- not consolidated or 'rolled up' from disparate station research." Says Gilbert, "The old days of callout music research are long gone, and today, the playing field is completely different. Stations should know exactly what they are getting. There are companies out there delivering what they call 'research for barter.' The deliverable is a set of fancy tables comparable to request lines on steroids (opt-in panels of contest pigs and record people)." Real Research is available on a barter basis in all rated markets on a format exclusive basis, by Arbitron-rated MSA. NuVoodoo is launching six mainstream formats, starting with Top 40, which will be available to stations on August 1. Country will be available September 1, with additional formats rolling out through year-end. We're told that NuVoodoo Real Research uses passive, outbound methodology conducted online 45 of every 52 weeks, tapping into national and regional databases and tens of thousands of respondents. NuVoodoo provides stations with Real Research data for download every Thursday via proprietary web site. Programmers can hear the hooks tested, create their own custom sorts, and sort by region, as needed. Ron Hartenbaum and Deb Greenbaum’s WYM Media will be handling affiliate relations for NuVoodoo. Gilbert adds, "Other research companies are struggling to get half a sample to 'roll' and small databases are used over and over again. Add that to the fact that station budgets are much tighter. It's an equation that puts stations at risk. NuVoodoo Real Research offers stations a genuine solution and a real alternative to what's out there. We couldn't be more excited to arm our clients with the data they need to program their stations with confidence and win in their markets." For more information about Real Research, contact Liz Laud at liz@wymmediamanagement.com.

Chicago Media Reporting Feud Heats Up for Summer?

Feder Facebook

We've tried to stay neutral in the longstanding "bad blood" between two of our favorite sources of Chicago radio and media news -- Robert Feder and Chicagoland Radio and Media. In fact, this may be the first time we've mentioned the situation. But for the first time (that we know of), there's a direct public confrontation between CRM's Larz and Feder. CRM We've previously not seen either quote or cite a report from the other, but Feder -- now "homeless" since his exit from Time Out Chicago, but posting reports at Facebook -- seemingly quoted a CRM report from Larz about WBBM-TV anchor Rob Johnson and the possibility he would be replaced. As Facebook user "Larz Crm," a comment was posted accusing Feder of deliberately skipping the last line of the cited report, with a link to the original version at Chicagoland Radio and Media. Feder, it seems, has now added to his report on CRM's report the last line that indicated, "Rob Johnson's agent swears that Rob Johnson is not going anywhere and is part of WBBM-TV's future plans." Feder clearly revealed his "open dislike" (we're trying to understate that) by referring to Larz as "The Bouncing Blogger" (and also revealing his supposed real name). Feder's reason for quoting the CRM report was obvious, as in a separate Facebook posting the veteran Chicago media reporter told readers that "Johnson has agreed to a multiyear renewal with CBS 2 to continue as 5, 6 and 10 p.m. weekday news anchor." The CRM comment on Facebook has not been deleted by Feder (as some have suggested), but has been buried below quite a few other comments. Larz posted, "Perhaps you should give a link back to that original quote. It shows that you purposely left off the final sentence in that report, which states Johnson's agent denies the rumors. Perhaps you should also look up the word blogger, since the CRM website hasn't had a blog on it since 2010 -- only factual, non-biased articles. You, however, are a 'bouncing blogger.' Although, 'bouncing Facebooker' is probably more like it nowadays." After offering the link to "the FULL, accurate report", Facebook user "Larz Crm" offers, "Hugs & kisses Robby!" But could (ultimately) this open, public exchange by two of our friends result in a summit meeting, peace talks, a truce? No, we doubt it. (But, can't we just all get along?)
