Nielsen: Music Sales Down 4.6% for First Half of 2013,
'Streaming Continues to Be Tremendous Growth Story'

Nielsen Entertainment Releases 2013 Mid-Year Music Industry Report

Nielsen

For the first six months of 2013, sales of albums and track equivalents were down 4.6% vs. the first six months of 2012. Digital albums are up 6.3 percent and Digital tracks were down 2.3 percent. CD sales declined 14.2 percent and Vinyl LP sales were up 33.5 percent. Nielsen SoundScan and Nielsen BDS reveal 2013 mid-year U.S. music sales figures for the six-month period of December 31, 2012 through June 30, 2013. Nielsen SoundScan measures U.S. point-of-sale of recorded music product. Nielsen BDS tracks U.S. radio airplay and music streams. "Overall sales are down slightly in the first half of 2013, but there continues to be encouraging growth in digital album sales," says Nielsen Entertainment Digital SVP David Bakula, noting that albums now comprise 43 percent of all album sales, up from 38 percent at this time last year. Also, while a small percentage of the overall album sales, Vinyl LPs continue to be an amazing growth story with sales up over 33 percent over last year’s record-setting pace.” “Streaming continues to be a tremendous growth story with over 50 billion audio and video streams in the first six months of 2013,” says Bakula. “Not only are we seeing massive volume of streams, but we continue to see growth on a comparable provider basis, with stream volume up 24 percent over the same period last year.” For the first six months of 2013, digital track sales were off 2.3 percent from 2012, to 682.2 million from 698 million a year earlier. Overall album sales "with track equivalent albums" were down by 4.6 percent, from 220.3 million to 210.2 million. Total album sales fell by 5.6 percent to 142 million, CD sales were down 14.2 percent to 78.2 million and digital album sales grew 6.3 percent to 60.8 million. Total streams of music, including audio and video, grew by 24 percent to 50.94 billion. Nielsen notes the percentage change only reflects activity of providers who reported data for the same six month period in 2012 and 2013.

Justin Timberlake's "The 20/20 Experience" and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' "Thrift Shop" were the biggest-selling album and digital song in the U.S. in the first half of 2013, selling 2.551 million (albums + track equivalent albums) and 5.6 million copies respectively. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' album "The Heist" was the second-best selling record of the first half of the year, with 1.679 million albums plus track equivalent albums, followed by Bruno Mars' "Unorthodox Jukebox," Imagine Dragons' "Night Visions and P!nk's "The Truth About Love." Timberlake's "20/20 Experience" was also the best-selling digital album in the first six months of 2013, as well as the best-selling album released this year and the top selling physical album as well. Nielsen now combines video and audio streams to find the top-streamed songs of the year, and Baauer's online sensation the "Harlem Shake" was the number one streamed song in the first six months of this year, with 438.45 million. At a distant second was "Thrift Shop," with almost 186.78 million, then PSY's "Gangnam Style" with just under 150.6 million. No other song reached 100 million streams. According to BDS, Bruno Mars took the top two positions for the most played songs on terrestrial radio in the first half of 2013, as "When I Was Your Man" was spun 392,000 times, just ahead of "Locked Out Of Heaven," with 391,000. Taylor Swift's "I Knew You Were Trouble" was the third most-played song, with 368,000 spins. "Suit & Tie" from Justin Timberlake and Jay Z was ranked fourth (365,000). "Thrift Shop" was fifth with 363,000. Read more from Nielsen here.

David Paterson Officially Joins New York's '970 The Answer'

David Paterson

Former New York Governor David Paterson has been co-hosting the 5-7pm show at Salem's News Talk "AM 970 The Answer" WNYM-AM, New York, alongside Curtis Sliwa. As "Curtis and the Gov," the duo has been doing it for about a month on a "temporary basis" in a tryout for Paterson. Now Salem Communications announces that David Paterson officially joins WNYM-AM, and the show will continue longterm. Sliwa also hosts "The Answer" morning show solo, which he will continue. "Working with Curtis, as opposed to being a solo host, gives me a wider berth to air my opinions and strike up an interesting back-and-forth with an outspoken and articulate critic on everything." Says WNYM-AM VP and General Manager Jerry Crowley, who hired Paterson at WOR-AM, "There was no more beloved or recognizable figure in talk radio than the Gov. It's amazing how fast he became skilled behind the microphone. He created quite a buzz when he first started reading commercials and our clients simply loved it. He was a big part of our success."

The High Cost of Moving (A Radio Station Without Authorization)

Totally Gospel WWFO-FM

Radio personalities who regularly move from one part of the country to another know moving expenses can be costly. But how costly is it for a radio station itself to move? That's without FCC approval. The Commission says that Fellowshipworld must pay $8,000 for moving its noncommercial WFWO-FM (at 89.7) 36 miles from Medina, New York, to Buffalo. An NAL (notice of apparent liability) says, "On the morning of October 18, 2012, in response to a complaint, an agent from the Enforcement Bureau’s Philadelphia Office (Philadelphia Office) used radio direction finding techniques to determine if the Station’s transmitter was operating from its authorized location, and the agent determined that it was not. The agent found that the transmitter was operating, instead, from the Fellowship Christian Center, located at 1420 Main Street in Buffalo, New York, which is 36 miles from the location authorized in its license. The agent also measured the field strength of the signal on 89.7 MHz to determine if the transmitter was otherwise authorized to operate under Part 15 of the Rules, and confirmed that it exceeded the maximum permitted level of 250 μV/m at 3 meters for non-licensed devices and, therefore, required a license to operate. A review of the FCC database revealed that there was no license to operate the Station on 89.7 MHz in Buffalo. In the evening of October 18, 2012, the agent also determined that no station was operating on 89.7 MHz from the transmitter site authorized in the Station WFWO authorization, which further confirmed that the Station’s transmitter had been moved." Fellowshipworld principal John Young told the FCC that he didn't know the transmitter had been on at its "new" location, blaming his children for turning it on. That attempted deception resulted in the Commission doubling the fine from the base $4,000. Yes, it just keeps getting more expensive for radio people to move! Read the FCC NAL here.

Virginia 'Classics Radio' Stations to Go Silent

Classics Radio

Educational Media Corporation says its two simulcasting Virginia Classical radio stations -- "Classics Radio" WWED–FM (89.5), Fredericksburg, and WWEM-FM (91.7), Lynchburg -- will go off the air by August 1. The nonprofit stations will continue as a webcast on ClassicsRadio.org. General Manager Pete Stover says that a lack of financial support in the Fredericksburg and Lynchburg areas is behind taking the two on-air stations silent. The stations solicit donations on ClassicsRadio.org and the Classics Radio Facebook page. The monthly operating budget for the 24-hour non-commercial All Classical music webcast is $10,000. WWED-FM, launched in 2005, and joined by WWEM-FM in 2007, tried several different formats, including Christian Preaching, Praise and Worship, Gospel, Bluegrass, and Christian AC. WWED-FM switched to a Classical format in February 2012. Educational Media Corporation (EMC) is a Virginia-based Religious non-profit, and is not related to EMF (Educational Media Foundation), also known as EMF Broadcasting, a not-for-profit organization that operates the "K-Love" and "Air1" radio networks. EMC was established in 1983 and incorporated in Virginia.
