New York '970 The Answer' Program Director Peter Thiele Resigns

Peter Thiele

Peter Thiele resigns as Program Director of Salem's Conservative Talk "970 The Answer" WNYM-AM and Christian Talk/Teaching WMCA-AM, New York, effective in early May. Thiele says he plans to relocate to San Antonio where he will establish a consulting firm specializing in branding and marketing. Confirming reports of his resignation, he thanks Phil Boyce, Jerry Crowley, Dave Santrella "and the rest of the Salem Team" for the opportunity he's had to program the two New York City stations. He joined the New York Salem stations in October 2007, coming in from the company's San Francisco cluster where he was Operations Manager for KFAX-AM and KNTS-AM. Before joining Salem in August 2006, Thiele was Program Director of Entercom's simulcasting Talkers "News Radio Word" WORD-AM and WYRD-AM, Greenville-Spartanburg, South Carolina. He also had been Program Director and an on-air host at WVNN-AM, Huntsville, Alabama, and has worked at KSTP-AM, Minneapolis.

Greater Media Returns Jersey Shore's WJRZ-FM to Classic Hits

WJRZ-FM

Greater Media returns WJRZ-FM, Manahawkin, NJ, serving the Ocean County portion of the Monmouth/Ocean market, to Classic Hits, after several years with an AC format. WJRZ-FM previously aired Classic Hits from 2000 until late 2009. Greater Media New Jersey SVP and Regional General Manager Daniel Finn tells us, "WJRZ-FM is now playing the heritage soundtrack of the Jersey Shore. We're returning to the legacy of WJRZ's roots." The station, he says, will air the music without hosts until the first week of May, "concentrating on the music that our listeners grew up with." A new on air line-up will be announced in the near future. WJRZ-FM will play "the greatest hits of the 60s, 70s and 80s." Glenn Kalina remains as Program Director, but morning co-host Dianne DeOlivera and afternoon host Tripp Rogers are both out. The return to Classic Hits at WJRZ-FM follows the music revamp and rebranding of Press Communications AC WWZY-FM/WBHX-FM from "The Breeze" to "107.1 FM - A Music Radio Station," dropping older songs in favor of more currents and recurrents. With Classic Hits -- "Jersey's Greatest Hits" -- WJRZ-FM will be featuring many of the older songs abandoned by the former "Breeze." Greater Media New Jersey specifically tells us that "WJRZ 100.1" will now feature "The Beatles, Michael Jackson, Chicago, Barry White, The Doobie Brothers, The Supremes, Madonna, Elton John and many more from this incredible music era."

Media Audit: Hispanic Internet Radio Listening Increases 'Dramatically'

The Media Audit

The number of Hispanics listening to Internet radio is increasing greatly, as the percentage of Hispanics who use mobile devices continues to grow, according to a new study from The Media Audit. In the top ten U.S. media markets, the Media Audit finds that 32.7 percent of all Hispanics have logged on to an Internet radio website such as Pandora, iHeartRadio, Radio.com or Slacker in the past month. That represents 4.2 million Hispanic Internet radio listeners in The Media Audit's top ten markets. Also, says the study, 29.8 percent of Hispanics listened to Internet radio in the past week, suggesting nearly the same number are logging on weekly as they are in a typical 30 day period. With 91 percent of Hispanic monthly Internet radio visitors listening on a weekly basis, the preliminary data suggests that many Hispanics are becoming loyal to Internet radio listening. Among all adults in the same top ten markets, 22.8 percent reported having listened to Internet radio within the past week, making Hispanics 35 percent more likely to be listening to Internet radio when compared to the general population. As for specific websites, 28.7 percent of Hispanics in the top ten markets logged on to Pandora in the past month, while 8.4 percent logged on to iHeartRadio.com, and 1.9 percent logged on to Radio.com. The figures represent "a dramatic change in Hispanic Internet radio listening behavior" from a year ago, when only 13.5 percent of Hispanics listened to Pandora. As a result, the year over year growth rate is 142 percent for Hispanics accessing Pandora. Further, only 3.9 percent of Hispanics accessed iHeartRadio in 2011, resulting in a 182 percent increase in monthly visits year-over-year, while access to Radio.com increased 52 percent during the same period.

The Media Audit's study also finds that among top Hispanic radio markets, Pandora and iHeartRadio remain competitive when compared to Hispanic-programmed local radio stations that heavily focus on the Hispanic market. In Los Angeles, 25.9 percent of the metro area's 3.9 million Hispanics reported having listened to Pandora within the past week, a figure that represents more than one million weekly listeners and topping weekly listening of all Hispanic-programmed stations or radio clusters. In the New York City metro, Pandora reaches 34 percent of the metro area's 3.2 million Hispanics weekly, followed by 17.1 percent who listened to iHeartRadio within the past week. The weekly figures represent more than 1.1 million weekly listeners for Pandora, and 560,000 weekly listeners for iHeartRadio. Among Miami's 1.7 million Hispanics, nearly one in four listened to Pandora within the past week, again ranking the popular Internet radio service number one among all Hispanic-programmed stations or radio clusters.

CBS Radio Philadelphia to Air HD Spanish Phillies Broadcasts

Phillies 24/7

CBS Radio Philadelphia may give a boost to the sale of HD Radio receivers, announcing that in conjunction with Spanish Beisbol Productions, they will air Spanish language play-by-play of Philadelphia Phillies games. But the Spanish broadcasts will air only on HD Radio -- via the "Phillies 24/7" channel on 98.1 WOGL-FM's HD4. The Spanish Phillies coverage begins May 3, when the Phillies take on the Miami Marlins at 7pm. CBS Radio and Spanish Beisbol Productions tell us the broadcasts will include pregame and postgame coverage. The Spanish broadcast team consists of Bill Kulik, Rickie Ricardo and Angel Castillo. "Phillies 24/7" -- claimed to be "the first ever HD Radio multicast station exclusively dedicated to a Major League Baseball team" -- airs continuously throughout the year. Says CBS Radio Philadelphia SVP and Market Manager Marc Rayfield, "We are excited to reach a new and growing audience with these broadcasts as we continue to expand our partnership with the Phillies. By carrying games on Phillies 24/7, CBS Radio Philadelphia is proud to expand coverage of Spanish play by play." Spanish Beisbol Productions President Bill Kulik adds, "As the Spanish language broadcasters of the Philadelphia Phillies, Spanish Beisbol Productions is excited to have our signal carried on WOGL's HD signal. The Hispanic population of the US is forecast to grow 188% between 2000 and 2050. By comparison, the non-Hispanic population is forecast to grow just 29%. With the number of Spanish speaking Phillies fans experiencing explosive growth in our region, and the Latino passion for baseball, this is a service that I am certain will be well received by the Hispanic community."

FCC Okay with 'Big Papi' Ortiz On-Air Use of 'F**king City'?

Comment Made Before Red Sox Saturday Opening Game at Fenway Park

David Big Papi Ortiz

FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski reportedly gave Boston Red Sox star David "Big Papi" Ortiz's use of the "f-word" in his comments to fans at Fenway Park before Saturday's game (which the Red Sox won 4-3) a note of support via Twitter. A Twitter tweet, attributed to Genachowski, via the FCC's verified account, reads: "David Ortiz spoke from the heart at today’s Red Sox game. I stand with Big Papi and the people of Boston - Julius." Ortiz, during the emotional ceremony following last week's Boston Marathon bombing, and Friday night's apprehension of the second suspect, said, 'This is our fucking city, and nobody is going to dictate our freedom. Stay strong." The ceremony didn't air on broadcast television and the WEEI-FM network was able to "dump" the "f-word" before it aired. The comment did air unedited on cable's MLB Network and the Red Sox TV outlet, NESN. But the FCC doesn't regulate content on non-over-the-air television -- and the "f-word" is often heard on cable/satellite stations. Also, while the Twitter account used was the Commission's verified account, there's no confirmation that the tweet was actually from Genachowski, as major accounts have recently been reported as hacked and showing unauthorized content. (For example, it's currently being reported that CBS Twitter accounts for "60 Minutes" and "48 Hours" and some NPR websites were hit by hackers last week.) Meanwhile, some are suggesting that Genachowski's comment was apparently in conflict with his Commission policy on "fleeting expletives" Such comments were the subject of the recent Supreme Court battle in which the Commission argued that it has the right to fine stations for "fleeting expletives" used by non-broadcasters during coverage of live events. However, the high court ruled that such enforcement needed clarification.

'Rob, Arnie and Dawn' Still Off the Air at Sacramento's '98 Rock'

Rob, Arnie and Dawn

As we told you last week to expect, morning hosts "Rob, Arnie and Dawn" did not return to the air this morning on Entercom "98 Rock" KRXQ-FM, Sacramento. The station last week pulled the locally-based syndicated "Rob, Arnie and Dawn in the Morning" off the air for airing a "Top 5 Reasons to Hate Boston," Wednesday (April 17). Thursday we wrote, "Despite earlier reports that they were off the station until Monday, we've now learned that no decision has been made as to when the show will return on KRXQ-FM. The trio originally said they were told they would be off the air for the rest of the week. That, after criticism from crosstown 'CBS Sports Radio 1140' KHTK-AM morning host Don Geronimo. He blasted Rob, Arnie and Dawn for the bit and for asking on Tuesday's show if it was too soon to joke about Boson. On their www.RobArnieAndDawn.com website, the hosts posted a lengthy statement criticizing KRXQ-FM for taking the show off the air. They have even stronger words about Sports Talker Geronimo." We also said before the weekend that "we have learned that the morning hosts may not actually be back on the air Monday. Sources at Entercom headquarters say no decision has been made about when they will return, despite their published statement that they'd return to 'Rock 98' Monday. One source suggests it likely won't be Monday when stations in the Boston market will commemorate the previous Monday's tragic events with a minute of silence at 2:50pm. Having heard about the reports that Entercom may not return the show to 'Rock 98,' Rob Williams says that as far as he knows the trio will indeed be back after the weekend. But he also notes no one from the station has contacted him or his two co-hosts, or their representatives, since telling them they'd be off the air Thursday and Friday." This morning their show was indeed still off the air at KRXQ-FM, which doesn't employ them but airs their show as a syndicated show even though it originates in Sacramento. While some are reporting the trio won't ever be back on KRXQ-FM, their show is still listed on the station's website. Williams now says he hopes the show will return to Sacramento radio tomorrow (Tuesday, April 23) after today's commemoration of last week's bombings in Boston.

Former NFL Coach Mike Holmgren Joins Seattle's 'Sports Radio KJR'

Mike Holmgren

As we first reported late last week in our "Behind the Microphone" feature, former Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers coach Mike Holmgren joins "Sports Radio KJR" KJR-AM/KNBQ-FM, Seattle, as an NFL expert and regular contributor, effective today (April 22). As he starts his new radio assignment, KJR Program Director Rich Moore tells us, "We are so excited to have Mike Holmgren join our team at Sports Radio KJR. As a former coach he has a great connection with the fans here in Seattle and his football mind and personality will really enhance our comprehensive football coverage." Holmgren returned to the Pacific Northwest after serving most recently as the President of the Cleveland Browns. Prior to that, Holmgren was the head coach of the Seahawks from 1999-2008. He will be on-air weekdays during "Mitch in the Morning" from 9-9:30am on Mondays, "Elise and Jerry" at 11am on Tuesdays, "Ian Furness and Jason Puckett" at 2pm on Wednesdays, and "Softy" from 4-4:30pm on Thursdays.

Radio Antenna/Tower Company Dielectric to Quit Business

Dielectric

Longtime broadcast equipment company Dielectric announces it will shift attention elsewhere, and close down its broadcast antenna business. Dielectric, in the business for more than 60 years, has recently been known to radio as a seller of towers, but that's coming to an end at the end of June. Actually, in recent years the company did more business with television than radio. The announcement comes just after Dielectric exhibited at the NAB Show in Las Vegas, as Dielectric General Manager Mark Fichter blames "extremely difficult global economic conditions in the broadcast marketplace." Dielectric was purchased by SPX in 2001. In a statement, SPX is encouraging 57 employees in Raymond, Maine, affected by the change, to apply for openings at other SPX-owned businesses, including the adjacently located RadioDetection, which installs and maintains infrastructure networks for utility companies. SPX says it's providing outplacement services to help Dielectric staffers find new jobs. Dielectric will, we're told, "continue to operate on in a limited capacity through the end of June" and will complete pending orders, and "the necessary steps to close the business." SPX tells us that by shutting down Dielectric it can focus on other business segments which are more profitable. "SPX is confident that this action is in the best interest of the company’s future growth and success," says their statement.
