Kantar Media: First Quarter Advertising Expenditures Were Flat
Total advertising expenditures in the first quarter of 2013 declined 0.1 percent from a year ago and finished the period at $30.2 billion, according to data released today by Kantar Media. Radio Media overall was down 1.7% -- with Local Radio -1.0%, National Spot Radio up 5.7% but Network Radio down 15.2%. "It has been a lackluster start for 2013, with flat year-over-year results due in part to strong 2012 growth caused by political and Olympic ad spending,” says Kantar Media North America Chief Research Officer Jon Swallen. "Data from the early second quarter are mixed, suggesting marketers are still being cautious and conservative with ad budgets. However, there are some bright spots, including healthy growth for Hispanic media and Outdoor."
Federal Judge Strikes Arbitron's Renda Complaint
Arbitron has until July 26 to re-file its lawsuit against Renda Broadcasting for unauthorized use of ratings data for the Jacksonville market after U.S. District Court Judge Marcia Howard ruled that the initial complaint was a "shotgun pleading" -- defined in a previous case as a complaint that “contains several counts, each one incorporating by reference the allegations of its predecessors, leading to a situation where most of the counts ... contain irrelevant factual allegations and legal conclusions." The judge has issued an order that says "the Court is faced with the onerous task of sifting out irrelevancies in order to decide for itself which facts are relevant to a particular cause of action asserted. Here, each subsequent count of the three counts in the Complaint incorporates by reference all allegations of each of the preceding counts." The complaint alleged violations of both federal copyright law and state unfair trade practices law. The federal judge's order strikes the complaint and orders Arbitron to file an amended complaint by July 26 or face dismissal. Arbitron claims Renda General Manager Bill Reese has been getting Arbitron numbers from a local ad agency friend and passing them out to members of his staff. Renda hasn't been an Arbitron subscriber since 2010. Fisher Shareholders to Vote on Sinclair Acquisition August 6
Fisher Communications shareholders are being asked to approve the proposed $373.3 million sale of the company to Sinclair Broadcast Group. Fisher has set a special shareholder meeting for August 6 at its Seattle headquarters for a vote on the deal. Fisher has just filed a proxy statement with the SEC on the pending deal with Sinclair. Fisher’s board is unanimously backing the $41 per share offer from Sinclair. Fisher shareholders will also get to vote on "golden parachute" payments to executives. They would pay CEO Colleen Brown $3.6 million in cash severance and other benefits, including stock and a prorated 2013 bonus. CFO Hassan Natha would get $807,000. EVP of Operations Robert Dunlop would receive $1.5 million. SVP/General Counsel Christopher Bellavia would be paid $1 million. The FTC has already cleared the deal, but FCC approval is still pending. Closing is expected by the end of the third quarter of 2013. Cracker's David Lowery Blasts Pandora's Royalty Payments
Cracker frontman David Lowery blasts Pandora's royalty payments to musicians, not only echoing Pink Floyd's criticism, but adding more specifics based on his own experience -- and posting his royalty statements online for Cracker's biggest hit, "Low." In a blog post on The Trichordist -- "My Song Got Played On Pandora 1 Million Times and All I Got Was $16.89, Less Than What I Make From a Single T-Shirt Sale!" -- Lowery says he was paid only $16.89 for 1.159 million plays of "Low" in the previous quarter. Lowery notes that he only owns 40 percent of "Low," so the rest of the band earned the other 60 percent of the royalties from Pandora. Lowery posts more of his royalty statements, noting that SiriusXM paid him $181 in the same period -- while he made $1,522 from terrestrial radio royalties. Lowery adds, "Soon you will be hearing from Pandora how they need Congress to change the way royalties are calculated so that they can pay much much less to songwriters and performers. For you civilians webcasting rates are 'compulsory' rates. They are set by the government (crazy, right?). Further since they are compulsory royalties, artists can not 'opt out' of a service like Pandora even if they think Pandora doesn’t pay them enough. The majority of songwriters have their rates set by the government, too, in the form of the ASCAP and BMI rate courts–a single judge gets to decide the fate of songwriters (technically not a 'compulsory' but may as well be). This is already a government mandated subsidy from songwriters and artists to Silicon Valley. Pandora wants to make it even worse. (Yet another reason the government needs to get out of the business of setting webcasting rates and let the market sort it out.)" Lowery then writes, "Here’s an idea. Why doesn’t Pandora get off the couch and get an actual business model instead of asking for a handout from congress and artists? For instance: Right now Pandora plays one minute of commercials an hour on their free service. Here’s an idea! Play two minutes of commercials and double your revenue! (Sirius XM often plays 13 minutes and charges a subscription). I urge all songwriters to post their royalty statements and show the world just how terrible webcasting rates are for songwriters."
GroupMNext Internet Radio Marketplace:
Radio listeners who spend more than 21% of their time listening via Internet radio are twice as likely to purchase a product they heard advertised compared to those who listen more predominantly to broadcast radio. "This is just one of many insights into the Internet Radio Marketplace our Consumer Insights and Research teams touch in this white paper after conducting research in order to better understand the growth of radio, dissect how Internet and broadcast work in tandem, and examine behaviors specific to Internet radio," reports GroupMNext. "This initiative included survey of 1,000 radio listeners in the U.S., from which compelling insights emerged about usage and behaviors, including intriguing insights into the interest in an Apple streaming radio service." Among other highlights, 40% of Internet radio listeners tune in just about anywhere – at home and on the go; and, based on the Apple brand name alone, 34% of Internet radio listeners in the survey said they would switch from their favorite service to an Apple Internet streaming music service. Read more of the research here. GroupMNext is a unit of GroupM, which describes itself as "the world's number one media investment management operation." More objectively, GroupM is the world's largest advertising media company in terms of billings. Pandora Claims New In-Car 'Milestones'
Pandora is claiming "new in-car milestones" that "demonstrate continued growth and momentum in the automotive category." To date, says Pandora, its streaming music service has seen more than 2.5 million unique activations through integrations from the 23 major automotive brands and eight aftermarket manufacturers with whom the company has established partnerships. Says Pandora Chief Marketing Officer Simon Fleming-Wood, "The vehicle is the traditional home of radio and thanks to our deep roster of forward-thinking automotive partners, Pandora has been seamlessly incorporated into the dash of more than 100 different vehicle models made available by our partners. We're thrilled that millions of people are enjoying Pandora through these integrations, which make listening to personalized internet radio as easy as AM/FM radio." Pandora notes that about half of all radio listening takes place in the car, and their ability to deliver the service through the native in-dash entertainment system has remained a key focus for the company since announcing its first automotive brand partnership with Ford in 2010. The company now estimates that one-third of all new cars sold in 2013 in the U.S. will have Pandora installed. Pandora also says it has made significant inroads to the automotive aftermarket sector through partnerships with eight manufacturers who have introduced more than 200 devices that feature Pandora from Alpine Electronics, Audiovox, Clarion, Dual Electronics, JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer and Sony Birmingham's '97.3 The Zone' Preparing for Format Flip
A format change is coming soon at Sports Talk "97.3 The Zone" WZNN-FM, Birmingham, now owned by Summit Media which obtained the station from Cox Media Group. Summit Media COO David Dubose says, "We have been evaluating the sports format in light of multiple factors, including [Paul] Finebaum’s placement. After nearly two years, it became clear the market did not support two competing sports stations. Therefore, we have determined we should focus on other format opportunities." Reports from the market say the station will reportedly end its Sports Talk format at the end of this week. Paul Finebaum departed Cumulus WJOX-FM in January following a long legal battle in an attempt to join the then Cox-owned WZNN-FM. Finebaum ultimately passed, instead joining ESPN Radio for a new regionally syndicated show set to start later this year. Finebaum’s new show will now likely be picked up by Cumulus to air on WJOX-FM. "The Zone" launched with hopes of getting Finebaum. WZNN-FM currently airs local programming from 6am to 6pm daily and ESPN Radio at other times. The national ESPN feed also airs around the clock in Birmingham on sister WENN-AM. Georgia Tech and Atlanta's 'The Zone' End Flagship Deal
Georgia Tech football and men's basketball will no longer air on Lincoln Financial Media Sports Talk "790 The Zone" WQXI-AM, Atlanta, the school and station jointly announce. The Yellow Jackets are also heard on crosstown Cumulus "All News 106.7" WYAY-FM, an arrangement which will continue. Georgia Tech's sports rights are now held by IMG College. "The Zone" deal was signed in 2001 by predecessor ISP Sports, and renewed in 2008, when WYAY-FM was added as an FM flagship. "We have had a longstanding relationship with 790 The Zone dating back to 2001," says Georgia Tech Athletic Director Mike Bobinski.
CNN Radio Pulls the Plug
You may have thought CNN Radio already called it quits when its radio distribution deal ended last year. But, until now it had lived on as an Internet audio feed at cnnradio.cnn.com and www.cnnradio.com, and with podcasts. Now, CNN pulls the plug on what remained, announcing CNN Radio will cease producing programming content today. CNN confirms the radio shutdown to MHBC, telling us, "The company completed a review of its radio business and has made the decision to cease production of CNN Radio podcasts, effective immediately." We've learned that means pink slips for up to a dozen staffers, although "a few" may be reassigned to other sectors of the company. CNN Radio's syndication deal ended April 1, 2012 when its agreement with Dial Global expired. Dial Global had inherited the arrangement with its acquiusition of Westwood One. DG replaced CNN Radio with an NBC News radio service. Nielsen: 'Upscale Latinos - America’s New Baby Boomers'
"Hispanics are steadily helping shape the landscape of America’s economy and have become a game changer for marketers. But within this broad demographic lies a powerful core segment that accounts for 37 percent of the group’s total spending power—and this spending power is increasing." According to Nielsen and the Association of Hispanic Advertising Agencies (AHAA), this viable and sophisticated market of upscale Latinos lives in a world of cultural duality, and provides lifetime value and upside opportunities for many high-end and luxury brands. Defined as Hispanic households earning $50K-$100K in annual income, upscale Latinos are the most influential segment since the baby boomers and will drive shifts in category consideration, purchasing behavior and brand relationship. Says the Nielsen report, "In 2012, the 15 million upscale Latinos in the U.S. accounted for 29 percent of the country’s Hispanic population—and that figure is expected to double by 2050. Upscale Latinos are younger than upscale non-Hispanic Whites (33 years old compared with 39 years old) and they live active lifestyles, often with young families. In fact, 85 percent of upscale Hispanics have a household size of three or more, compared with 65 percent of upscale non-Hispanics. While upscale Hispanics reside across the country, they are mostly concentrated in urban areas such as Los Angeles, New York, Houston and Miami, although they show significant representation in secondary markets such as Honolulu and Washington, D.C. and Oklahoma City. A force behind new businesses with higher educational and professional attainment, upscale Latinos are technologically savvy and are often viewed as trendsetters among their peers. They’re more likely to use smartphones, own iPads and subscribe to one of the top four U.S. mobile providers." Read more from Nielsen. Organizers of the Radio Show, jointly produced by the NAB and the RAB, announce that CBS Radio's Carson Daly will moderate a panel on the relationship between Radio, record labels and artists. The programmer's session will take place on Wednesday, September 18 at 10:15am at the Radio Show in Orlando. For nine years, Daly has executive produced "NBC's New Year's Eve with Carson Daly." Federal News Radio Unveils New Logo
Washington DC's "Federal News Radio 1500" WFED-AM and FederalNewsRadio.com today introduced new brand imaging in the form of a logo that celebrates Federal News Radio as a multimedia source of federal news and information. Over the years, the station has migrated from delivering federal news solely on the internet to broadcasting on 1050 AM to now 1500 AM, the former home of sister station WTOP, and a full market FM signal. Since 2006 and the creation of the original logo, Federal News Radio has continued to emerge into a multi-platform resource for federal news and information that includes FederalNewsRadio.com, Facebook, Twitter, and Linked In. The new logo publicly rebrands the station and places more emphasis on its digital assets. "I'm very happy with our new logo," says Federal News Radio Program Director Lisa Wolfe. "It gives appropriate recognition to our two major distribution platforms and streamlines our public-facing image. Our new branding more accurately reflects the multimedia news organization we always have been." And Federal News Radio General Manager Joel Oxley tells us, "Our previous logo put too much emphasis on our dial position and did not celebrate the success of our online publication. Our listeners and readers tell us our website is just as critical to their daily work and understanding trends as our on-air interviews." Providence's WPRO-AM Hosting Immigration Debate
Cumulus "News Talk 630 and 99.7" WPRO-AM/WEAN-FM, Providence, hosts its second "Debate Series" event, June 26 from 12-1pm, "Green Light on Green Cards." The panel of Rhode Island experts to discuss illegal immigration issues in Rhode Island includes Roberto Gonzalez, David Borts, Terry Gorman, State Rep. Peter Palumbo and Rev. Don Anderson.

'The Link' Launches in Fort Myers
The realignment of Beasley's Southwest Florida stations is completed with the launch of Alternative/Modern AC hybrid "The Link" on four FM translators. Those translators had been re-broadcasting Sports Talk "770 ESPN" WWCN-AM before Beasley gave it a full power FM signal of its own on 99.3 replacing "99X" which, in turn, has been merged with "96 K-Rock" WRXK-FM, Fort Myers. "The Link" is being promoted as "Southwest Florida's Modern Music" and launches with 10,000 songs in a row. Former "99X" hosts Roger Marley and Gabbi are scheduled to relocate to "The Link" soon. "The Link" is airing on 96.5 W243BM, Suncoast Estates; 98.1 W251AL, Fort Myers; 101.5 W268AH, Bonita Springs; and 105.1 W286AK, Naples, via WRXK-FM's HD2 multicast channel. Last week, Beasley Southwest Florida told us that "The Link" will "play the biggest songs from Triple-A, Alternative, and Hot AC on one radio station" and include artists such as Imagine Dragons, Muse, Mumford & Sons, fun. and Coldplay along with U2, R.E.M., Dave Matthews Band, INXS and more. Said Beasley Southwest Florida VP and Market Manager Brad Beasley, "The crossover music between Alternative, Triple A, and Hot AC formats have never been hotter. We feel a unique radio station celebrating the richest artists in today’s Pop/Alternative music alongside proven artists with multiple decades of success will deliver a unique upscale audience currently not being served by the many gold-based radio stations in Southwest Florida." Arbitron Sues Renda for Unauthorized Jacksonville Ratings Use
Arbitron is suing Renda Broadcasting for copyright infringement. In the suit filed in U.S. District Court in Florida, Arbitron claims that Renda used Jacksonville ratings without paying for them -- that Renda's contract to use the data expired in December 2010, but that between May 2011 and at least December 2012, Renda "illicitly obtained” copies of the Jacksonville ratings from an unnamed advertising agency. The suit says a senior exec of the ad agency "was a long time friend and business associate of Bill Reese" -- Renda's Jacksonville General Manager. Reese allegedly gave the ratings info to "99.9 Gator Country" WGNE-FM Sales Manager Charlie Jennings and cluster Operations Manager Chuck Beck, as well as AC "Lite 96.1" WEJZ-FM morning host Arthur Crofton who also requested and received his own reports from the agency. According to the suit, Reese at first received the ratings information in the form of printouts, but later the cluster was sent emails with the information. It claims Reese promised to shred the ratings once they looked them over. Arbitron is seeking at least $150,000 per infringing act plus attorney's fees and enhanced damages, along with injunctive relief and at least $500,000 for inducement of the agency to infringe on the copyright. Arbitron is not seeking damages from the ad agency that shared the data. Renda has not yet filed a response to the suit. Pink Floyd: 'Pandora's Internet Radio Royalty Ripoff'
Three members of the iconic Classic Rock band Pink Floyd -- making their opinions known on webcasters royalty rates in an op-ed piece in USA Today -- are especially critical of Pandora. Roger Waters, David Gilmour and Nick Mason write, "Great music can inspire deep emotions, and businesses have long sought to harness this power in order to make money. Nothing wrong with that – everyone deserves to make a living – but too often it leads to less than scrupulous behavior. The latest example is how Pandora is pushing for a special law in Congress to slash musicians' royalties – and the tactics they are using to trick artists into supporting this unfair cut in pay. It's a matter of principle for us. We hope that many online and mobile music services can give fans and artists the music they want, when they want it, at price points that work. But those same services should fairly pay the artists and creators who make the music at the core of their businesses. For almost all working musicians, it's also a question of economic survival. Nearly 90% of the artists who get a check for digital play receive less than $5,000 a year. They cannot afford the 85% pay cut Pandora asked Congress to impose on the music community.

Weekend Update

Coming: 'Rock All Night' with Mikey Esparza, Russ Mottla
Veteran major-market personality Mikey Esparza partners with Rock programmer Russ Mottla for a return to radio as co-hosts of Envisage Radio's syndicated Classic Rock show "Rock All Night" -- which will air live from 12midnight-6am weekdays, starting in July. Esparza is best known as "Mikey" from his time in mornings at KEGL-FM, Dallas; KBZT-FM and KIOZ-FM in San Diego; and KSJO-FM, San Jose. He hosted "The Mikey Show" for nine years in nights and five years in mornings. "I am unbelievably excited to get back behind a microphone, and I'm equally excited to play the music I love while being able to do the creative, engaging radio that 'The Mikey Show' was so popular for," says Esparza. "I had a blast doing mornings and I broke into radio doing overnights. The late night audience is a lot of fun, and I can't wait to have fun with them." Mottla, with over 25 years in Rock radio, has served as Program Director for WIYY-FM, Baltimore, and WFNX-FM, Boston. He was also Operations Manager and PD at Alternative WDRE-FM, Long Island. He's also worked at WAAF-FM and WZLX-FM in Boston. Says Mottla, "Since I was a kid growing up in Boston listening to Larry Glick's overnight show on WBZ, I've realized the special relationship a station can develop with its listeners during the late night and how that one show made me a WBZ listener. Consequently, I have always wanted to develop that kind of show for music radio and by finding Mikey tending to kelp beds right here in San Diego, I've found the perfect partner to achieve that goal." WGN-AM Wins IBA 'Chicago Station of the Year'
Tribune's News Talk WGN-AM has won top honors at the 2013 Illinois Broadcasters Association Silver Dome Awards. For a sixth consecutive year, the IBA awarded "WGN Radio 720" the Chicago Market Station of the Year designation at the annual IBA awards ceremony. WGN-AM also received first-place in five categories -- major market personality for Mike McConnell, best newscast for Judy Pielach, best station website for wgnradio.com, best play-by-play team for Chicago Cubs broadcasters Pat Hughes and Keith Moreland, and best humorous commercial for “Chicago Food and Wine,” produced by Jason Skaggs. “It is a great honor to receive the award for Chicago Market Station of the Year by the Illinois Broadcasters Association,” says WGN Radio President/General Manager Jimmy de Castro . “To be recognized by our industry peers is a reflection of the tremendous talent and dedication from our staff to continue to provide the quality of programming our community expects from WGN Radio.” WGAC-AM-FM Named 'Georgia Station of the Year'
Beasley Broadcast Group News Talk WGAC-AM-FM, Augusta, has been named "Radio Station of the Year" by the Georgia Association of Broadcasters for a 12th year in a row. New this year, WGAC was honored in the large-market category. For the past 11 years, WGAC was awarded Radio Station of the Year in the medium-market category. Says VP and Market Manager Kent Dunn, "I am extremely proud of the WGAC-AM-FM staff for bringing home our 12th consecutive Gabby for 'Radio Station of the Year.' This year is even more special due to the added competition of being placed in the division that includes stations in Atlanta." Program Director Harley Drew adds, "This is the 12th year in a row that we have won, but this award is even more exciting for us because we were, for the first time, compared to every station in Georgia -- including the big boys in Atlanta! Being placed in the large-market category makes the award extra sweet to us. It also makes all the hard work we put forth to excel in every area very much worth it. Needless to say, we are very, very happy!"

Clear Channel Jacksonville Facing Discrimination Lawsuit
Clear Channel Jacksonville is facing a federal lawsuit for discrimination based on race and gender. Three female account execs/sales reps have filed suit against the company, alleging such discrimination and seeking "declaratory, injunctive and equitable relief, compensatory damages, costs and attorneys' fees for racial and sex discrimination and retaliation suffered by Plaintiffs." The suit was filed in U.S. District Court, Middle District of Florida, Jacksonville Division, by attorney Arnold Gaines of the Harper Law Firm on behalf of Angela Myhand, Monique Blue and Jessica Downs. Myhand worked for Clear Channel for eight years, Downs for six. Blue, who is still employed by the company, has been there for close to nine years. The three ad sellers allege that "Clear Channel continuously and systematically removed large commission accounts" and "distributed the accounts to Caucasian and/or male employees" -- causing them "significant losses of commissions and income." According to the suit, "Listening devices were installed by Clear Channel on Plaintiffs' office telephones after or about the initial filing of Plaintiffs' discrimination charges with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). Plaintiff, Angela Myhand, was told by an employee or agent of Clear Channel that the device was installed so that 'they could listen to [her] conversations'." The three are charging that management violated Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and allege retaliation for involvement in a protected activity. They are seeking unspecific damages plus attorneys’ fees.
Pandora Files Motion with ASCAP Rate Court:
Pandora is continuing its quest for lower royalty rate payments, now filing a motion with the ASCAP Rate Court, saying that publishers looking for their own agreements with Pandora are bound by ASCAP's consent decree and cannot withdraw from the organization in favor of cutting their own deals. Reports say Pandora is asking the rate court judge to specifically rule on publishers that have already filed a notice with ASCAP of their intent to withdraw some publishing rights as of July 1. Pandora says these publishers are obligated to keep these digital rights with ASCAP. Billboard.com reports its sources say, "Pandora is asking the judge to rule on whether publishers like Universal, BMG Chrysalis and Warner/Chappell, which have all filed a revocable notice with ASCAP of their intention to withdraw certain limited 'New Media' rights as of July 1, are in fact obligated to keep those digital rights at ASCAP for the purposes of Pandora licensing." Billboard adds, "While sources say Universal and BMG are withdrawing their digital rights from ASCAP on July 1, Warner/Chappell has yet to reveal what it will do on that date." Pandora contends that since its own license with ASCAP runs up to the end of 2015, the ASCAP consent decree should also apply to the major publishers until that time as well. However, the publishers say that Pandora is operating under a temporary license, until an official rate is set, and that they are within their rights to withdraw digital rights from ASCAP. According to Billboard, "If the ASCAP rate court judge rules in Pandora's favor, then all the publishers, including possibly Sony/ATV, will be stuck with the rate the court decrees, says one source familiar with the situation. But others dismiss that notion, saying that since Pandora willingly entered into a deal with Sony/ATV, not only will that deal stand, but it also helps the legal case of the other publishers who are seeking direct deals." The rate court judge is not expected to rule on the motion until late July, weeks after the publishers could withdraw from ASCAP. 'Listen Longer' Didn't Last Long After Arbitron Legal Threats Controversial Kansas City Website Now Gone; Only Blank Screen with '#LISTENLONGER' Remains
"Listen Longer" -- ListenLonger.com -- didn't last long after it drew media attention and threats from Arbitron of legal action against the site's owner. All that remains is a basically empty screen displaying "#LISTENLONGER" (as seen in the graphic with this report) -- obviously directing followers to the site's Twitter posting that explains why it's now down. On June 13, we reported, "The website ListenLonger.com -- targeting Kansas City PPM ratings participants -- receives an angry response from Arbitron -- as the 'ListenLonger' site itself reports. 'Received a cease & desist letter from Arbitron. Read it' said ListenLonger, providing a link." A week ago, the website offered "an explanation of 'Why we're here' which detailed Arbitron's PPM ratings system, and concerns for an unnamed Kansas City radio station." We later learned, and reported, that the unnamed Kansas City station was Entercom Alternative "96.5 The Buzz" KRBZ-FM. The station had been promoting that their listeners needed to stay more attached to KRBZ-FM and "listen longer" to prevent a format flip. Paul Love, who launched ListenLonger.com, is one of their listeners. "We are a site dedicated to saving our favorite KC radio station through education about the rating system. We won’t be naming that station anywhere on this site, and ask that you don't reference it with regard to this site either," said the site last week. "ListenLonger.com is in no way affiliated with the station, and this will keep them out of harms way." On June 14, we reported, "Arbitron Confirms Kansas City May Ratings Integrity, Action Follows 'Listen Longer' Website Controversy." We told you then, "Arbitron informs its subscribers that the 'Listen Longer' website -- and the controversy surrounding it -- has not affected the integrity of its latest PPM ratings for the Kansas City market." Soon thereafter, ListenLonger.com modified its site to remove some content that brought the ire of Arbitron upon it. Now, Chris Love has taken the site down, telling Twitter followers, “I need a new project.” Before taking it down, Love modified the site to tell visitors NOT to out themselves as PPM participants, as he'd previously requested. Love tells us that no one ever actually did so. Even with the site gone, though, the controversy continues among Kansas City broadcasters, with Arbitron again re-affirming its view that the ratings were not negatively affected, and declining to re-do them. Is this the end of the story? We suspect not. 'Guess FM' Debuts in Memphis
Independent broadcaster Mighty Media Group debuts "Guess FM 97.7" in Memphis, on translator W249BN, with "a non-stop marathon of all kinds of pop, rock and soul hits." The "Guess What's Next?" format, we're told, "has something for almost everyone spotlighting the best music from the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s and Today." Clearly, this goes far beyond the "Jack" concept of "we play anything" despite the superficial similarity. The new "Guess FM" is running jockless and commercial free, overseen by consultant Joel Folger. "We're very excited to launch a brand new station for all types of music lovers here in the Mid-South," says Program Director Tom Freeman. "Guess FM takes a fun, casual approach and our broad playlist sounds like a gazillion songs and artists. Listeners can tune in to "Guess What's Next?" for days or weeks without hearing the same songs over and over and over again like most other stations." And says General Manager Diana Smith, "Memphis, and the entire Mid-South now have a station they can truly call their own. Guess FM is driven by focusing on all kinds of music that can appeal to the whole family and also be perfect for office listening." The 250-watt 97.7 FM translator had previously simulcast Mighty Media's Country "95.3 The Rebel" WEBL-FM. The new "Guess FM" is also airing on AM 1430 WOWW-AM, which feeds the translator. By the way, Smith says that's a correction from a news release which said "Guess" was originating on 830 AM WUMY-AM, which continues to originate programming for sister Classic Country "Y105.5" on FM translator W288BJ. 'UberStations' Launches for Online Listening New Service Finds Specific, Recommended Live Radio Content
Michael Robertson launches UberStations -- "a new way to listen to online radio stations as well as traditional AM/FM broadcast stations online." The service, we're told, "includes a comprehensive guide to radio showing listeners what's playing across the entire radio spectrum. An intuitive player displays and plays every station with a single click." And a "recommendation engine steers people to music or shows of interest." Robertson is the entrepreneur who launched MP3.com, MP3Tunes, and the "DVR for radio" DAR.fm.
Glenn Beck's Mercury Radio Arts Buys Dallas-Area Studio Building
Glenn Beck’s Mercury Radio Arts has purchased the studio building where Beck has been producing his show for Premiere Networks and TheBlaze, his online and satellite TV network. The former television and movie studio in Irving, Texas, a 72,000 square foot facility that's hosted Beck on a lease basis since last year, will be renamed Mercury Studios. The building has in the past been used for production of several TV shows and movies since opening in 1982, including "Robocop" and "Walker Texas Ranger." Says Beck, "We are proud to call Texas our home and be part of the local community in Irving. We are building a world-class facility that provides TheBlaze with the highest quality talent and top-of-the-line production capabilities so American stories can be told to viewers across the country.” TheBlaze President and Chief Content Officer Joel Cheatwood tells us, “TheBlaze has quickly built up the capacity to produce over 43 hours of original programming per week and we are excited to now have our own multi-media base as we continue to grow.” Sam Huff Retiring from Redskins Radio Network
Hall of Fame linebacker and broadcaster Sam Huff says he's retiring from the Washington Redskins Radio Network after 38 years. Huff came to the Redskins as a player in 1964 and began broadcasting games in 1975 after a playing career that included being named one of the top 100 players in NFL history. Huff and his longtime broadcasting partner and friend Sonny Jurgensen (pictured together) were teamed in 1981 on the Redskins Radio Network where the duo called all three Washington Redskins Super Bowl titles. In announcing his retirement, Huff said, "I've enjoyed every game that I played, coached and provided color commentary over the last 50 years with the Washington Redskins. I look forward to joining Larry, Sonny and Doc on the pre-game show a few times this season." Washington Redskins Owner/Chairman Daniel Snyder tells us, "Although Sam's commentary duties will change he will always be part of our Redskins family, and we look forward to his future contributions on Washington Redskins broadcasts." Red Zebra CEO Rick Carmean adds, "This is truly the end of an era. You cannot think Redskins Radio without Sam and Sonny. We support Sam's decision and look forward to having him as a special guest during the season." Sam Huff will be honored during a pregame ceremony at a to be determined Redskins game." The Washington Redskins Radio Network airs on 33 stations, including flagship, Red Zebra's "ESPN 980" WTEM-AM, Washington DC. Mike Paterson Named Mid-West Rockford Market Manager
Mike Paterson is named Market Manager for Mid-West Family Broadcasting's Rockford, Illinois, four-station cluster. Paterson joins from Emmis where he was GSM for Rock KSHE-FM, St. Louis, for the past two years. He takes over from J. Chapman, who is exiting to head up the new Woof Boom Radio. Mid-West Family is buying the Rockford cluster along with stations in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, from Maverick Media for $15.5 million. Paterson has a diversified radio background, having worked in almost all departments. Before joining Emmis in August 2011, Paterson worked at Clear Channel's Minneapolis stations as GSM from 2009-2011. Before that, he was Digital Sales Manager for Cox Radio Group's Atlanta and Houston clusters from 2006-2009. Prior to that, he was Marketing Director for Susquehanna Radio’s CHR-Top40 KRBE-FM, Houston, from 2000-2006. He's also worked in promotion in Austin and Milwaukee. Earlier in his career he was a sports report and an on-air personality at several CHR-Top40 stations. TuneIn Launches 'Events-Focused Initiative'
TuneIn tells us they are launching "an events-focused initiative" which they say will "bring live radio in a way that's never been done before." TuneIn will provide radio stations and air personalities the opportunity to promote their own in-studio performances, interviews and concerts directly through TuneIn, exposing those events to TuneIn's audience of over 40 million monthly active listeners. So far, we're told, there have already been 2,400 events featured. TuneIn says the new initiative also helps radio stations grow their digital audiences and brands, which in turn can ultimately make generate cash through TuneIn's revenue share deals. Also, listeners across all iOS and Android platforms can now instantly add future events to their personal calendars. Just before an event starts, listeners will receive a notification, and with a simple click the event will start playing immediately. TuneIn notes that "one of the great things about radio that services like Pandora can never replicate is the sheer number of live events that happen every day -- from interviews to concerts to sporting events." TuneIn has also hired individuals with strong radio backgrounds, including: Director of Strategic Sales Jon Latzer, Audio Sales Manager/East Scott Elberg and Audio Sales Manager/West Leon Clark. Says Head of Advertising Sales Rick Cotton for TuneIn noted, "It is an exciting time in this white-hot industry of targeted mobile advertising. We find that radio is an incredibly compelling sector for brands to reach their audiences and we are excited about working hand in hand with our broadcast partners to help their sales teams monotize this rapidly growing audience." John Wetherbee Joins 'America Weekend' as Chief Stormcaster
Envision Radio Networks tells us that AMS and NWA certified meteorologist and broadcast veteran John Wetherbee will be the "Chief Stormcaster" for "America Weekend" -- providing live reports on major severe weather developments and how they may impact travel, business and the country. He joins hosts Paul Harris, Turi Ryder, and other talk talent on the syndicated weekend programming. "As we have learned, many significant weather events happen on weekends," says America Weekend Executive Producer Kipper McGee. "John adds a unique national perspective that is absent from most weekend News Talk programming." The "America Weekend" programming -- the "next generation of weekend talk" -- is said by Envision to offer "a break from the usual brokered programming and rerun political fare of most News Talk stations" featuring "news you can use, plus interviews with the people making it happen." "In recent years we have been fortunate to have our games and coach's shows also broadcast on a 77,000-watt FM station, giving us a powerful signal which more than covers the Atlanta metro area. We will continue to maintain a relationship with WQXI as a significant local sports talk station, but the flagship designation, by mutual agreement, will come to an end." He adds, "Through the years we have maintained an excellent relationship with the ownership and management of 790 The Zone. We appreciate their efforts on behalf of the partnership, but at this point it is in both parties' best interest to restructure our broadcast relationship. We are excited about our future with All News 106.7 as well as our developing relationship with Cumulus and other important entities in the Atlanta radio market."
Founder and CEO Alan Levy tells us, "Tavis brings a new level of broadcast excellence to the platform that bolsters the evolution of BlogTalkRadio. We are thrilled to offer our listeners even more compelling content through Tavis and his network featuring other top broadcasters.” Says Smiley, "BlogTalkRadio gives me the ability to engage with fellow citizens in a way I haven't been able to since 2001. I'm excited about this partnership with BlogTalkRadio and look forward to the launch of the Tavis Smiley Network (TSN), the new home for smart talk online." Veteran journalist and talk-show producer Michael Horowicz will executive produce TSN for Smiley Radio Properties. Recently, BlogTalkRadio announced that media executives Stephen Colvin (former CEO of Newsweek Daily Beast) and Craig Marks (former editor of Spin, Blender and Popdust) have joined the company. Craig Marks has been named BlogTalkRadio's first Editorial Director and Stephen Colvin has joined as a Strategic Advisor.
As VP, Consulting, Williams will manage the company’s growing strategic consulting practice and will remain focused on helping clients build and execute successful digital media business strategies. His expertise spans market research and segmentation, forecasting, strategic planning, new product development, partnerships and competitive intelligence. His domain specialties include social media, mobile platforms, digital advertising and ecommerce. "Mike and Jed have been valuable assets to BIA/Kelsey, our clients and the industry at large, through their analysis and coverage of the trends, technology and business models shaping the local media landscape," says BIA/Kelsey Managing Director Rick Ducey. "I look forward to working closely with each of them in their expanded roles, as they contribute in new ways to the growth of our business."
He tells us that thousands of music and talk stations are monitored in real-time and users can see what songs are playing on stations in their area and see instantly when songs change with a pleasing fade in-and-out display. For Talk stations, users see what shows are playing. By default users are shown stations in their local region, but they can also search for stations in other areas and monitor what is playing in those areas. Clicking a station plays the stream in a web browser. Both MP3 and AAC stations stream directly into the browser using HTML5 with a Flash fallback providing a universal player for all popular radio stations. The uniform web experience is also useful for PCs and tablets. Says Robertson, "Remember when you had to scan through each TV channel to find something to listen to because there was no interactive guide? That's how radio still is today, but UberStations changes that by giving users a comprehensive real-time guide to songs and shows that are playing across the entire radio world all of which play in a uniform experience." According to the Los Angeles Times, UberStations is offering a challenge to TuneIn and iHeartRadio.
