PTC Issues 'Action Alert' About 'Proposed FCC Enforcement Changes' 'Mean MORE Obnoxious and Offensive Content Over Broadcast Airways'
Although their premise is actually somewhat incorrect, the PTC is warning, "The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) recently proposed changing the rules governing their enforcement of broadcast decency laws. Under the new rules, the FCC would only investigate and issue fines against the most 'egregious' broadcast content. Harsh profanity and 'non-sexual' nudity might not be punished under the new rules — IF we allow those new rules to be implemented." Referring to the FCC's recently issued call for public comments on enforcement of indecency rules, the PTC "alert" -- published on its website -- goes on to say, "That's right. The FCC is giving the broadcast networks license to air as much explicit profanity and nudity at any time of the day, regardless of how many children might be in the viewing audience. And as we all know, if you give the networks an inch, they’ll take a mile... so if this rules change goes into effect, we can expect to see an explosion of sex, profanity and graphic nudity pouring into our homes over the public broadcast airwaves. It's an outrage!
Michael Martin Signs Extension with CBS Radio
Michael Martin has agreed to a new multi-year contract to continue as VP of Programming for CBS Radio's San Francisco stations -- CHR-Top40 "99.7 Now" KMVQ-FM, Hot AC "Alice @ 97.3" KLLC-FM, and Alternative "Live 105" KITS-FM -- and as CBS Radio VP of Top 40 Programming, a position he has held since February 2012. Martin is also a key part of the development and execution of CBS Radio’s national music programming initiatives. "Our music stations in San Francisco have experienced consistent ratings growth under Michael’s leadership," says SVP and Market Manager Doug Harvill. "As a respected programmer with deep roots in the music community, Michael has been influential in transforming the way radio stations interact with an audience both on a local and national level. We are pleased to continue this winning partnership." Martin joined CBS Radio in 2009, following a career managing the operations and programming of a number of stations in Los Angeles and San Francisco, including serving as Program Director of KYSR-FM, KMEL-FM, KYLD-FM and KIOI-FM. George Willborn Joins 'Doug Banks Radio Show'
The newly launched Doug Banks Media hires George Willborn, Michael Baisden’s former co-host. He debuts on April 25 on the Urban AC "Doug Banks Radio Show" -- joining co-host DeDe McGuire and replacing co-host Rudy Rush. Dubbed comedy’s “Stress Reliever,” Willborn was the co-host of the nationally syndicated Michael Baisden show for eight years, up until the show’s recent cancellation. Willborn tells us, "I grew up with Doug and let me make this perfectly clear - I am now and have always been a fan of his. I’m looking forward to doing whatever I can to bring all of my talent and every one of my fans to compliment the tremendous talent that is Doug Banks.” Says Banks, "I’ve always wanted to work with George. It was just a matter of timing. This move will take the show to an entirely new level. And how perfect is it that we have him for our Next Big Voice debut?" Doug Banks Media President Ed Pearson adds, “George is a rare talent with lots of fans. His addition to The Doug Banks Radio Show will result in even higher ratings and affiliate growth.” Bob Socci Named New England Patriots Play-By-Play Voice
Veteran sportscaster and play-by-play broadcaster Bob Socci is named the radio play-by-play announcer for the New England Patriots on "98.5 The Sports Hub" WBZ-FM, the official flagship radio station of the three-time Super Bowl champions. Socci (pronounced So-SEE) replaces Gil Santos, who retired following the 2012 season after 36 years as the Patriots' radio voice. Socci, who has called Navy football games on the radio for the past 16 years, will join analyst Scott Zolak, who will be entering his third season as part of the broadcast team. "This is the thrill of a lifetime to get the opportunity from 98.5 The Sports Hub and the Patriots organization to continue the tradition established by the legendary Gil Santos to be the play-by-play announcer for the New England Patriots," says Socci. CBS Radio Boston VP of Programming Mike Thomas tells us, "We were impressed with his extensive work and expertise calling various football and baseball games, and he’s a local guy with great knowledge of the Patriots. No doubt, Bob has big shoes to fill, but we are excited about this new era of play-by-play with Bob and Scott." Socci will appear on the "98.5 The Sports Hub" show "Felger and Massarotti" show Thursday afternoon, and will join the "Gresh and Zolak" midday program for their NFL draft special Saturday. Socci is currently in his first season as one of the two radio voices of the Pawtucket Red Sox. He will be leaving that position July 1. Cox Media Group Promotes Two in Houston Sales
Cox Media Group Houston names Judy Lakin as its new cluster Director of Sales, and Alana Thomas as CMG Houston’s new General Sales Manager for Classic Hits "The Eagle" KGLK-FM. Lakin will oversee the entire cluster sales department, and continue to be responsible for the combo "Country Legends 97.1" KKBQ-FM and KTHT-FM, where she's been General Sales Manager for more than 12 years. Lakin joined Cox in 2000. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Advertising Education Foundation of Houston and Houston Advertising Federation of America. Thomas, who will work closely with Lakin on cluster opportunities, has been with CMG for seven years. She's currently involved with the Media Alliance of Houston and has served on the Houston Works Board since 2011. Says CMG Houston VP and Market Manager Mark Krieschen, "I am extremely proud of Judy and Alana and that we’re able to promote such amazing sales talent from within CMG. Both of these women are proven winners, solid leaders in the advertising community, and deserving of their new roles at CMG. Judy and Alana will be hiring a new local sales manager for the cluster soon." TTN and Univision Radio Renew, Expand Partnership
Total Traffic Network (TTN) announces a renewed and expanded multi-year agreement with Univision Radio. Effective immediately, we're told, TTN will be the exclusive traffic content provider for Univsion Radio. As part of the expanded partnership TTN will provide its "24/7 News Source" newswire service to all of Univision's news and talk stations. TTN's "24/7 News Source" is a web-based News and Information wire service delivering national, state and local news, weather, sports and consumer reports, plus entertainment news and format-specific show prep. "Our partnership with Univision brings together two industry leaders to provide Spanish-speaking radio listeners the traffic and news information they need from the stations they trust," says TTN SVP of Affiliate Sales Mike Haake. "With the Hispanic population in the U.S. growing by over 40 percent in the last decade, our partnership with Univision Radio will ensure that Total Traffic's radio network mirrors the diversity of our markets. I'm very pleased we've been able to turn this into a long term relationship." Apple Reports Record Fiscal Q2 Revenue
Apple announces its financial results for the company's fiscal second quarter, which ended March 30, reporting that the company's revenue for the quarter was $43.6 billion. That's up from $39.2 billion a year ago. Net profit, however, fell from $11.6 billion a year ago to $9.5 billion, representing Apple's first year-to-year profit decline in a decade. According to CNet, though, the reported numbers are above Apple's own expectations for the quarter -- and are essentially in line with Wall Street predictions. Apple sold 37.4 million iPhones in its fiscal Q2, as well as 19.5 million iPads and just under four million Mac computers. Apple's iTunes Store set a new record with $2.4 billion in sales, up 28 percent from a year ago, head of its 10th anniversary. The iTunes Store launched in 56 new markets around the globe in late December. "We are pleased to report record March quarter revenue thanks to continued strong performance of iPhone and iPad," said Apple’s CEO Tim Cook. "Our teams are hard at work on some amazing new hardware, software, and services and we are very excited about the products in our pipeline." Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer adds, "Our cash generation remains very strong, with $12.5 billion in cash flow from operations during the quarter and an ending cash balance of $145 billion." Apple's news release says the company "is providing the following guidance for its fiscal 2013 third quarter: revenue between $33.5 billion and $35.5 billion; gross margin between 36 percent and 37 percent; operating expenses between $3.85 billion and $3.95 billion; other income/(expense) of $300 million; and, tax rate of 26%." Grooveshark Loses Latest Round in Court
A New York court rules against Grooveshark in an appeal of its case with Universal Music Group. Last July a court rejected UMG's argument that the DMCA's safe harbors didn't apply to pre-1972 sound recordings, because, technically, those recordings are not covered by federal copyright law. UMG appealed, and in doing so made, what some observers say are "some compelling arguments about the wording of the law." The appellate court agreed, and has now issued pretty much the opposite decision of the earlier one -- pre-1972 sound recordings are not covered by the DMCA, and thus Grooveshark has no DMCA safe harbors for such songs. A 17 page decision, handed down Tuesday, contains the new ruling. UMG's lawsuit argued that Grooveshark had infringed on copyrights by hosting songs uploaded by users that were owned by the label. Grooveshark said it was relying on the "safe harbor" rules, but UMG countered that the provisions did not apply to pre-1972 recordings. TechDirt writes, "There are a few different parts to the ruling, but the core argument is straightforward: section 301(c) of the Copyright Act explicitly states that no 'rights or remedies' under common law copyright on pre-1972 recordings shall be 'annulled or limited' until 2067, and it's pretty hard to argue that the DMCA doesn't do that." After a lengthy write-up of the UMG vs Grooveshark case, and the DMCA, TechDirt concludes: "The only optimistic thought is that perhaps it [the latest ruling] would force congress to revisit the law, and we could finally push for a Digital Millennium Copyright Act that actually works in the digital millennium." AWM to President Obama: Consider Diversity in FCC Appointments
The Alliance for Women in Media (AWM) is one of 50 in a national group of organizations sending a letter to the White House urging the Obama Administration to nominate candidates committed to promoting "diversity and inclusion" when filling two FCC vacancies -- a new Chair and one Commissioner. AWM says it "strongly believes the FCC needs leaders committed to reversing the extraordinarily low representation of minorities and women in media." They tell us in a news release, "The representation of women and minorities remains disproportionately low in industries overseen by the FCC. These industries collectively represent one-sixth of our nation's economy. The letter notes that "[m]inority and women's participation in broadcast ownership are particularly at risk, as they continue to decline rapidly." The organizations signing the letter also are encouraging President Obama to address the issues by nominating leaders who will "assign the highest priority to racial and ethnic minority and women's participation in the nation's most influential industries." Says AWM President Erin Fuller, "The Alliance for Women in Media has been encouraged by the past appointments of Commissioners that share our priorities of diversity and inclusion. We eagerly await the FCC to reach full composition, and stand ready to assist in areas including research, public education and promoting the role of all forms of media in our society."

Cox Enterprises Announces Executive Changes
Cox President/CEO Jimmy Hayes to Retire, John Dyer to Succeed Him
Cox Enterprises, the parent of Cox Media Group, announces a series of executive changes, with President/CEO Jimmy Hayes set to retire from the company in April 2014. That spurs the changes, we're told, as "part of the company's long-term, succession plan." Among the coming changes, current CMG President Douglas Franklin will become EVP/CFO of Cox Enterprises. Hayes has served as President/CEO since 2008, leading the company’s four major subsidiaries -- Cox Communications, Manheim, Cox Media Group and AutoTrader Group, as well as corporate headquarters groups including financial operations, human resources and administration. Hayes will continue serving as a member of the Cox Enterprises Board of Directors. "Jimmy has led an impressive career at Cox, and I consider it a privilege having worked alongside him for so many years," says Cox Enterprises Chairman Jim Kennedy. "I thank Jimmy for his loyalty and service to Cox, and am delighted to work with him over the next 12 months to carefully and thoughtfully transition Cox’s next senior leadership team." Effective May 1, John Dyer will be named COO of Cox Enterprises and will succeed Hayes as President/CEO upon Hayes’ retirement next year. A 36-year Cox veteran, Dyer currently serves as EVP/CFO of Cox Enterprises, a position he's held since 2008. "John is a seasoned Cox leader with deep and rich experience in both finance and operations," says Kennedy. "His commitment to the Cox culture, coupled with his pursuit of excellence makes him the perfect choice to succeed Jimmy. I look forward to working closely with John as we continue to invest in opportunities to grow our portfolio of businesses." Douglas Franklin will succeed Dyer becoming EVP/CFO of Cox Enterprises, effective May 1. Franklin currently serves as President of Cox Media Group, a position he has held since 2011. In his new role, Franklin will be responsible for the company's treasury, financial reporting and control, as well as tax and audit functions. He also has responsibility for public policy, supply chain services, information technology, risk management and legal. "Doug has spent his entire career with Cox and will make a great addition to the Cox Enterprises senior leadership team," continued Kennedy. "His extensive experience in both finance and operations is the ideal background for this role, and the skills he’s honed for the past three decades will serve him well as he makes his transition."
'Rob, Arnie and Dawn' Apologize for Boston Comments,
The syndicated morning team of Rob, Arnie and Dawn published an apology on their website for comments made on-air about Boston in the aftermath of last week's Boston marathon bombings. And they have now returned on Entercom "98 Rock" KRXQ-FM, Sacramento. Their Sacramento-based syndicated show was pulled off the air last week by the station because of comments on Tuesday and Wednesday, as previously reported here. They then posted a lengthy defense of their comments, and criticism of a crosstown host who attacked them on his show on their www.RobArnieAndDawn.com website. Now, on the same website, they have issued an apology -- and "clarification" -- for those widely-reported comments, including some made Monday (April 22) on the show which was syndicated and streamed, although not aired on KRXQ-FM. "Last week and again this morning, content from some of our broadcasts and photos from our websites were taken completely out of context and published with innuendo or suggestion that somehow we or RAD Radio have been insensitive to the victims of the Boston tragedy. We are sad and disgusted that those two monsters inflicted such extraordinary pain and damage and we stand with Boston and everyone else seeking answers and justice. To the degree anything we have done or said, regardless of context, is or has been construed as insensitive or offensive to the victims of the Boston tragedy, we whole-heartedly and sincerely apologize. As always, thank you for your continued support." That apparently was enough as Entercom returned "Rob, Arnie and Dawn in the Morning" to KRXQ-FM. Clear Channel Seattle Names Keith Cunningham VP of Programming
Clear Channel Media and Entertainment (CCME) Seattle appoints Keith Cunningham as VP of Programming, effective May 19. He will oversee all programming operations for the seven-station Seattle cluster. Cunningham joins CCME from Jacobs Media, where he was Broadcast Media Consultant since 2005 and Morning Show and Talent Development Specialist. Before Jacobs, Cunningham operated his own firm, Media Positioning, for five years. Previously, Cunningham worked at Clear Channel stations in Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Jose and Denver. "The past seven years with Jacobs Media has been a wonderful experience, and I feel fortunate to now have the opportunity to return to Clear Channel Media and Entertainment to work with Seattle's great brands like Kiss, KUBE, KJR AM and FM and The Brew," says Cunningham. "The Clear Channel Seattle cluster is well positioned for growth -- the resources available to the team are second to none and each brand is loaded with great talent, both on and off the air." CCME Seattle Market President Lisa Decker tells us, "I am excited to have Keith join the Clear Channel Seattle management team. He brings a wide-range of experience and knowledge to our programming operations and is well suited to lead our brands and talent to be the best they can be." CCME SVP of Programming Brad Hardin adds, "Keith's past experience working with multiple brands in a variety of markets will bring strong leadership and a unique vision to our management team in Seattle. I look forward to working with Keith to grow our already strong listener base." Denver Broncos Extend with KOA-AM, Add FM '103.5 The Fox'
News Talk "News Radio 850" KOA-AM, Denver, signs a four-year extension with the Denver Broncos to continue as flagship station which it has been since 1969. Under the new agreement, the Broncos add FM coverage with game day play-by-play airing on sister Clear Channel Classic Rock "103.5 The Fox" KRFX-FM. KOA's Dave Logan is entering his 24th season in the Broncos broadcast booth and 17th season as the radio play-by-play voice. Former Broncos wide receiver Ed McCaffrey will be back for his second year as color commentator. "850 KOA and the Denver Broncos have been a winning combination for more than 40 years," says Clear Channel Denver Market President Pat Connor.
Atlanta's WGST-AM to Return to News Talk
Clear Channel says it will return WGST-AM, Atlanta, to a News Talk format on June 3. The station dropped the format for Spanish Sports "ESPN Deportes" in late September of last year. WGST-AM's return to Talk will feature only syndicated programming -- including "Wall Street Journal This Morning" along with Glenn Beck, Andrea Tantaros, and Dave Ramsey. Beck and Ramsey currently air in the market on "News Talk 1160" WCFO-AM.
Univision Reports 2.4% Q1 Radio Revenue Increase
Univision reports that first quarter overall revenue increased 6.4% to $562 million from $528.4 million in the year-ago period. For radio, Univision says net revenue was up slightly (2.4%) -- from $66.8 million to $68.4 million. Univision Television, one of the top five U.S. networks, provided a much bigger chunk of the overall revenue increase. Says Univision CEO Randy Falco, "We saw strong performance across our divisions throughout the first quarter. Univision increased its primetime audience by 4% among Adults 18-49 and by 5% among Total Viewers 2+ compared to the first quarter of 2012. And, Univision had the #1 ranked Spanish-language radio station during the quarter among Adults 18-34 in 9 of the top 12 Univision markets where Arbitron’s Portable People Meter is used." Univision owns or operates 69 radio stations in 16 of the top 25 U.S. Hispanic markets and Puerto Rico. Analyst Marci Ryvicker Sees Stronger Radio Q2
Wells Fargo Securities analyst Marci Ryvicker says in a new report that the radio business is picking up as the second quarter of 2013 begins. Ryvicker notes, "Radio started 2013 rather soft but picked up in March and April." She says that January and February of 2013 were down compared to the same months in 2012. While radio has essentially been flat in the last few quarters, she writes, "We do believe that March ended in positive territory, with upward trends continuing in April." First quarter fiscal reports from broadcasters will begin rolling out in early May. Ryvicker expects "the focus of the first quarter calls will likely be cost control," and we can expect to learn about "the impact of various format changes." Key points to look for, she says, are the early ratings at the new Cumulus Country "NASH FM" WNSH-FM, New York; more information about FM chips in mobile phones; the Sports radio battles; any mention of competitors to terrestrial radio, especially Internet radio providers; and lower radio royalty payouts to ASCAP and BMI. 'Shareholders Foundation' Sues to Block Sinclair Acquisition of Fisher
"The Shareholders Foundation Inc." has reportedly filed a lawsuit seeking to block the sale of Fisher Communications to Sinclair Broadcast Group. We've previously reported that Sinclair announced its intent to acquire Fisher for $41 per share, but the so-called "Shareholders Foundation," based in San Diego, says that's not enough. In their suit they say that Fisher "breached their fiduciary duties by agreeing to sell the company too cheaply via an unfair process," claiming the "$41-offer is too low and undervalues the company." According to a news release, "Indeed, after the takeover announcement shares of Fisher Communications, Inc. rose in the open market above the current offer. In fact, FSCI shares traded on April 16th, 2013, as high as $41.39 per share. Furthermore the plaintiff alleges that the takeover process is also unfair to FSCI stockholders." It's interesting to note that "The Shareholders Foundation Inc." fails to identify any specific Fisher shareholders in their news release or in the actual lawsuit. The news release doesn't tell us exactly where -- or in what court -- the suit has been filed. We have so far been unable to directly confirm that such a suit has even been filed, but have based our report on the news release sent out late Monday (April 22). CEA Chief Gary Shapiro: Broadcasters Impede Innovation
Consumer Electronics Association (CEA) President and CEO Gary Shapiro says broadcasters are blocking technological innovation, specifically broadband spectrum auctions. Shapiro, addressing The Media Institute, said: "We are concerned that broadcasters seem less enthused about the auctions. In fact, while we were pushing for the law allowing auctions, broadcasters worked tirelessly to thwart its passage, first claiming against all credible evidence that there is no spectrum crisis, and then insisting that a complete spectrum inventory be performed prior to passage of any auction legislation. The legislation passed anyway. Now, broadcasters appear to be employing every possible strategy to slow walk the auctions." Shapiro also said that he could offer "many instances where the broadcasters tried to or actually thwarted or stalled technological innovation." Said the CEA CEO, "They push mandates, like an FM chip in cell phones, or tuners in TVs, or must carry on cable, or banning of devices, or new payments on others and no payments by them to copyright owners. Their message is clear: as long as existing broadcasters have their piece of the pie, there's no need to care about everyone else. To which I respond: innovate or die." During his address, Shapiro also offered three strategies for innovation to the NAB as well as the overall broadcast community -- Compete in the marketplace; Think beyond 30 minutes; and, Stop relying on Washington. Univision Radio Launches Uforia Music Service
Univision Radio launches the Uforia music service, the company's "new audio strategy aligning music efforts under one umbrella." As part of the strategy, the company will also launch "an upgraded music app focused on content curation with deep Latin genres." Following previous multi-platform debuts of singles from other artists, Univision Radio will exclusively debut Marc Anthony's new salsa single, "Vivir mi vida," April 26. Says Univision Radio President Jose Valle, "Univision Communications is committed to continuing our legacy of bringing the most cutting edge entertainment to Hispanic America. By leveraging the size and scale of the company's media platforms, we provide an unparalleled promotional platform for established and emerging artists while transforming the digital music experience for our audiences." Univision Radio also tells us that UCI is helping to foster emerging talent by partnering with music labels to exclusively premiere songs from up-and-coming artists. "Univision Communications is the most comprehensive solution for artists looking to reach and engage Hispanic America," says EVP of Content and Entertainment Evan Harrison. "We know our audience's listening preferences are evolving and have developed our new music service, Uforia, to meet their multiplatform lifestyle. Uforia will become Hispanic America's #1 choice for audio entertainment." This summer, we're told, Univision will formally release the upgraded music app, under the name Uforia, focused on content curation with deep Latin genres. The upgraded app will feature exclusive channels, customizable stations housing more than 20 million songs. It will also offer "a friend-sourcing service" by which users will be able to not only see what their connections are listening to, but also recommend music to them directly. Entercom Donates $25,000 to The One Fund
Entercom -- the radio broadcast partner of the Boston Red Sox and the Boston Celtics -- has made a $25,000 donation to The One Fund. That's the special fund set up by Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick and Boston Mayor Tom Menino to help those most affected by the Boston Marathon bombings on April 15. In the Boston market Entercom operates Rock WAAF-FM, News Talk WRKO-AM, and Sports Talk WEEI-FM and WEEI-AM -- but the donation to The One Fund comes from the company as a whole, says Boston VP and Market Manager Jeff Brown. "On behalf of over 2,000 Entercom employees across the country and our incredible Entercom team here in Boston, we are honored to donate $25,000 to The One Fund to help assist the victims and the families of the Boston Marathon tragedy."

Says Shannon, “My ideal candidate needed to have national sales experience, a programing background, and have an intimate knowledge of how special the Conclave is. Phil’s got it all." Strider tells us, "I'm unabashedly happy to be involved with the Conclave! I have long respected the intent and efforts of the organization and anyone who has attended in the past knows the Conclave Summer Conference is truly unique among industry gatherings. Bob Shannon and the board are mixing up some heady brew for Conclave 38." Cox Appoints Russell Lawson Athens-Gainesville GSM
Cox Media Group names Russell Lawson General Sales Manager for its six radio stations in the Athens-Gainesville Geogia market, effective May 13. "We are excited to have Russell join our team and to be able to tap into CMG's top internal sales talent," says CMG Athens VP and General Manager Scott Smith. "His multi-faceted experience in a variety of radio sales situations, and dedication to his craft, will make him an asset to CMG Athens-Gainesville." Prior to joining CMG Athens-Gainesville, Lawson, a Georgia native, was Account Manager at CMG's News Talk WOKV-AM-FM, Jacksonville, for the past five years. His 11 years with CMG began at Jacksonville's WAPE-FM, a heritage CHR station that's been on-air for more than 50 years. Additionally, Lawson is a 2012 CMG President's Circle honoree, a program that recognizes the company's top sellers. "I am glad to be returning to my Georgia roots, and I've seen wonderful people and systems in my visit to CMG Athens. My wife and I are thrilled about this opportunity and I look forward to joining the CMG Athens family," says Lawson. Mark Panetta Exits DMR Interactive
Mark Panetta has exited DMR Interactive, where he was most recently SVP of Marketing Strategy. Panetta was with the company for 17 years. "Over that time I've helped dozens of radio's key players improve their ratings position," says Panetta. "After all these years on the agency side I'm actually really excited about the chance to transition to the client side." DMR Interactive develops marketing campaigns. Panetta tells us he can be contacted by email at Mark.panetta@comcast.net.

New York '970 The Answer' Program Director Peter Thiele Resigns
Peter Thiele resigns as Program Director of Salem's Conservative Talk "970 The Answer" WNYM-AM and Christian Talk/Teaching WMCA-AM, New York, effective in early May. Thiele says he plans to relocate to San Antonio where he will establish a consulting firm specializing in branding and marketing. Confirming reports of his resignation, he thanks Phil Boyce, Jerry Crowley, Dave Santrella "and the rest of the Salem Team" for the opportunity he's had to program the two New York City stations. He joined the New York Salem stations in October 2007, coming in from the company's San Francisco cluster where he was Operations Manager for KFAX-AM and KNTS-AM. Before joining Salem in August 2006, Thiele was Program Director of Entercom's simulcasting Talkers "News Radio Word" WORD-AM and WYRD-AM, Greenville-Spartanburg, South Carolina. He also had been Program Director and an on-air host at WVNN-AM, Huntsville, Alabama, and has worked at KSTP-AM, Minneapolis. Greater Media Returns Jersey Shore's WJRZ-FM to Classic Hits
Greater Media returns WJRZ-FM, Manahawkin, NJ, serving the Ocean County portion of the Monmouth/Ocean market, to Classic Hits, after several years with an AC format. WJRZ-FM previously aired Classic Hits from 2000 until late 2009. Greater Media New Jersey SVP and Regional General Manager Daniel Finn tells us, "WJRZ-FM is now playing the heritage soundtrack of the Jersey Shore. We're returning to the legacy of WJRZ's roots." The station, he says, will air the music without hosts until the first week of May, "concentrating on the music that our listeners grew up with." A new on air line-up will be announced in the near future. WJRZ-FM will play "the greatest hits of the 60s, 70s and 80s." Glenn Kalina remains as Program Director, but morning co-host Dianne DeOlivera and afternoon host Tripp Rogers are both out. The return to Classic Hits at WJRZ-FM follows the music revamp and rebranding of Press Communications AC WWZY-FM/WBHX-FM from "The Breeze" to "107.1 FM - A Music Radio Station," dropping older songs in favor of more currents and recurrents. With Classic Hits -- "Jersey's Greatest Hits" -- WJRZ-FM will be featuring many of the older songs abandoned by the former "Breeze." Greater Media New Jersey specifically tells us that "WJRZ 100.1" will now feature "The Beatles, Michael Jackson, Chicago, Barry White, The Doobie Brothers, The Supremes, Madonna, Elton John and many more from this incredible music era." Tommy Del Rio Named Monterey 'Beach' Program Director
Veteran radio programmer Tommy Del Rio is in at the Mapleton Communications Monterey-Salinas-Santa Cruz cluster, as Program Director of CHR-Top40 "101.7 The Beach" KCDU-FM and Soft AC "B103.9" KBOQ-FM, effective April 22. Del Rio was most recently with Buckley Broadcasting Rhythmic CHR "Q97" KSEQ-FM, Visalia, California, and Classic Rock KIOO-FM, Fresno-Visalia, where he was Operations Manager and Program Director. "Tommy is the exact type of programmer we were looking for," says Mapleton Communications VP Mike Skot, "1017 The Beach shows excellent potential and Tommy will push it to the next level." Del Rio -- who has also programmed KYZZ-FM, Monterey, Classic Rock KIOO-FM, Fresno and KBMB-FM, Sacramento -- tells us, "Since I like long walks on the beach, or so the cliche goes, it makes perfect sense for me to program a station called 'The Beach!' I am excited to join the Mapleton team and look forward to working with CEO Jim Shea, GM Jodi Morgan, VP Mike Skot, OM Kenny Allen and the entire staff. This is a great opportunity for me to utilize my marketing strategies and creative strengths to enhance the KCDU and KBOQ brands for the Monterey-Salinas-Santa Cruz metro." Jay Rodriguez Joins Houston 'Sunny 99.1' Morning Show
Clear Channel AC "Sunny 99.1" KODA-FM, Houston, hires Jay Rodriguez as its new morning show co-host, teaming with Dana Tyson, and taking over from Marc Sherman who will be heard in afternoons. Rodriguez, most recently the Executive Producer for the syndicated Yolanda Adams Morning Show, is "returning to his roots" as an on-air host, and especially a morning personality, says the station. He's been recognized as a two-time winner of "The Stellar Award" for "Morning Show of the Year" by the radio industry. The number of Hispanics listening to Internet radio is increasing greatly, as the percentage of Hispanics who use mobile devices continues to grow, according to a new study from The Media Audit. In the top ten U.S. media markets, the Media Audit finds that 32.7 percent of all Hispanics have logged on to an Internet radio website such as Pandora, iHeartRadio, Radio.com or Slacker in the past month. That represents 4.2 million Hispanic Internet radio listeners in The Media Audit's top ten markets. Also, says the study, 29.8 percent of Hispanics listened to Internet radio in the past week, suggesting nearly the same number are logging on weekly as they are in a typical 30 day period. With 91 percent of Hispanic monthly Internet radio visitors listening on a weekly basis, the preliminary data suggests that many Hispanics are becoming loyal to Internet radio listening. Among all adults in the same top ten markets, 22.8 percent reported having listened to Internet radio within the past week, making Hispanics 35 percent more likely to be listening to Internet radio when compared to the general population. As for specific websites, 28.7 percent of Hispanics in the top ten markets logged on to Pandora in the past month, while 8.4 percent logged on to iHeartRadio.com, and 1.9 percent logged on to Radio.com. The figures represent "a dramatic change in Hispanic Internet radio listening behavior" from a year ago, when only 13.5 percent of Hispanics listened to Pandora. As a result, the year over year growth rate is 142 percent for Hispanics accessing Pandora. Further, only 3.9 percent of Hispanics accessed iHeartRadio in 2011, resulting in a 182 percent increase in monthly visits year-over-year, while access to Radio.com increased 52 percent during the same period.
CBS Radio Philadelphia to Air HD Spanish Phillies Broadcasts
CBS Radio Philadelphia may give a boost to the sale of HD Radio receivers, announcing that in conjunction with Spanish Beisbol Productions, they will air Spanish language play-by-play of Philadelphia Phillies games. But the Spanish broadcasts will air only on HD Radio -- via the "Phillies 24/7" channel on 98.1 WOGL-FM's HD4. The Spanish Phillies coverage begins May 3, when the Phillies take on the Miami Marlins at 7pm. CBS Radio and Spanish Beisbol Productions tell us the broadcasts will include pregame and postgame coverage. The Spanish broadcast team consists of Bill Kulik, Rickie Ricardo and Angel Castillo. "Phillies 24/7" -- claimed to be "the first ever HD Radio multicast station exclusively dedicated to a Major League Baseball team" -- airs continuously throughout the year. Says CBS Radio Philadelphia SVP and Market Manager Marc Rayfield, "We are excited to reach a new and growing audience with these broadcasts as we continue to expand our partnership with the Phillies. By carrying games on Phillies 24/7, CBS Radio Philadelphia is proud to expand coverage of Spanish play by play." Spanish Beisbol Productions President Bill Kulik adds, "As the Spanish language broadcasters of the Philadelphia Phillies, Spanish Beisbol Productions is excited to have our signal carried on WOGL's HD signal. The Hispanic population of the US is forecast to grow 188% between 2000 and 2050. By comparison, the non-Hispanic population is forecast to grow just 29%. With the number of Spanish speaking Phillies fans experiencing explosive growth in our region, and the Latino passion for baseball, this is a service that I am certain will be well received by the Hispanic community." FCC Okay with 'Big Papi' Ortiz On-Air Use of 'F**king City'? Comment Made Before Red Sox Saturday Opening Game at Fenway Park
FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski reportedly gave Boston Red Sox star David "Big Papi" Ortiz's use of the "f-word" in his comments to fans at Fenway Park before Saturday's game (which the Red Sox won 4-3) a note of support via Twitter. A Twitter tweet, attributed to Genachowski, via the FCC's verified account, reads: "David Ortiz spoke from the heart at today’s Red Sox game. I stand with Big Papi and the people of Boston - Julius." Ortiz, during the emotional ceremony following last week's Boston Marathon bombing, and Friday night's apprehension of the second suspect, said, 'This is our fucking city, and nobody is going to dictate our freedom. Stay strong." The ceremony didn't air on broadcast television and the WEEI-FM network was able to "dump" the "f-word" before it aired. The comment did air unedited on cable's MLB Network and the Red Sox TV outlet, NESN. But the FCC doesn't regulate content on non-over-the-air television -- and the "f-word" is often heard on cable/satellite stations. Also, while the Twitter account used was the Commission's verified account, there's no confirmation that the tweet was actually from Genachowski, as major accounts have recently been reported as hacked and showing unauthorized content. (For example, it's currently being reported that CBS Twitter accounts for "60 Minutes" and "48 Hours" and some NPR websites were hit by hackers last week.) Meanwhile, some are suggesting that Genachowski's comment was apparently in conflict with his Commission policy on "fleeting expletives" Such comments were the subject of the recent Supreme Court battle in which the Commission argued that it has the right to fine stations for "fleeting expletives" used by non-broadcasters during coverage of live events. However, the high court ruled that such enforcement needed clarification.
'Rob, Arnie and Dawn' Still Off the Air at Sacramento's '98 Rock'
As we told you last week to expect, morning hosts "Rob, Arnie and Dawn" did not return to the air this morning on Entercom "98 Rock" KRXQ-FM, Sacramento. The station last week pulled the locally-based syndicated "Rob, Arnie and Dawn in the Morning" off the air for airing a "Top 5 Reasons to Hate Boston," Wednesday (April 17). Thursday we wrote, "Despite earlier reports that they were off the station until Monday, we've now learned that no decision has been made as to when the show will return on KRXQ-FM. The trio originally said they were told they would be off the air for the rest of the week. That, after criticism from crosstown 'CBS Sports Radio 1140' KHTK-AM morning host Don Geronimo. He blasted Rob, Arnie and Dawn for the bit and for asking on Tuesday's show if it was too soon to joke about Boson. On their www.RobArnieAndDawn.com website, the hosts posted a lengthy statement criticizing KRXQ-FM for taking the show off the air. They have even stronger words about Sports Talker Geronimo." We also said before the weekend that "we have learned that the morning hosts may not actually be back on the air Monday. Sources at Entercom headquarters say no decision has been made about when they will return, despite their published statement that they'd return to 'Rock 98' Monday. One source suggests it likely won't be Monday when stations in the Boston market will commemorate the previous Monday's tragic events with a minute of silence at 2:50pm. Having heard about the reports that Entercom may not return the show to 'Rock 98,' Rob Williams says that as far as he knows the trio will indeed be back after the weekend. But he also notes no one from the station has contacted him or his two co-hosts, or their representatives, since telling them they'd be off the air Thursday and Friday." This morning their show was indeed still off the air at KRXQ-FM, which doesn't employ them but airs their show as a syndicated show even though it originates in Sacramento. While some are reporting the trio won't ever be back on KRXQ-FM, their show is still listed on the station's website. Williams now says he hopes the show will return to Sacramento radio tomorrow (Tuesday, April 23) after today's commemoration of last week's bombings in Boston. Former NFL Coach Mike Holmgren Joins Seattle's 'Sports Radio KJR'
As we first reported late last week in our "Behind the Microphone" feature, former Seattle Seahawks and Green Bay Packers coach Mike Holmgren joins "Sports Radio KJR" KJR-AM/KNBQ-FM, Seattle, as an NFL expert and regular contributor, effective today (April 22). As he starts his new radio assignment, KJR Program Director Rich Moore tells us, "We are so excited to have Mike Holmgren join our team at Sports Radio KJR. As a former coach he has a great connection with the fans here in Seattle and his football mind and personality will really enhance our comprehensive football coverage." Holmgren returned to the Pacific Northwest after serving most recently as the President of the Cleveland Browns. Prior to that, Holmgren was the head coach of the Seahawks from 1999-2008. He will be on-air weekdays during "Mitch in the Morning" from 9-9:30am on Mondays, "Elise and Jerry" at 11am on Tuesdays, "Ian Furness and Jason Puckett" at 2pm on Wednesdays, and "Softy" from 4-4:30pm on Thursdays. Radio Antenna/Tower Company Dielectric to Quit Business
Longtime broadcast equipment company Dielectric announces it will shift attention elsewhere, and close down its broadcast antenna business. Dielectric, in the business for more than 60 years, has recently been known to radio as a seller of towers, but that's coming to an end at the end of June. Actually, in recent years the company did more business with television than radio. The announcement comes just after Dielectric exhibited at the NAB Show in Las Vegas, as Dielectric General Manager Mark Fichter blames "extremely difficult global economic conditions in the broadcast marketplace." Dielectric was purchased by SPX in 2001. In a statement, SPX is encouraging 57 employees in Raymond, Maine, affected by the change, to apply for openings at other SPX-owned businesses, including the adjacently located RadioDetection, which installs and maintains infrastructure networks for utility companies. SPX says it's providing outplacement services to help Dielectric staffers find new jobs. Dielectric will, we're told, "continue to operate on in a limited capacity through the end of June" and will complete pending orders, and "the necessary steps to close the business." SPX tells us that by shutting down Dielectric it can focus on other business segments which are more profitable. "SPX is confident that this action is in the best interest of the company’s future growth and success," says their statement.

Friday's Radio & Media News - April 19, 2013
|
[Updated] Boston Radio Returned to News-Info Emphasis,
With Boston in a lockdown Friday morning (April 19), as a massive manhunt continued for a second suspect from Monday’s Boston Marathon bombings, radio in the market returned to a major news and information mode. CBS Radio was simulcasting All News WBZ-AM on its four Boston FMs, after news that one bombing suspect had been killed and the second was at large with an all-out manhunt. The bombing suspect who was killed, and the second suspect being sought, robbed a covenience store, then "shot a police officer to death, carjacked an SUV and hurled explosives out the window in an extraordinary firefight with law enforcement," authorities told national news media. The second suspect was on the loose, and police ordered people in the Boston suburb of Watertown to stay in their homes and businesses not to open. Boston shut down its buses and subway system for the hunt. The surviving suspect has been identified as Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, 19, whose last known address was Cambridge, Massachusetts (pictured). His brother, 26-year-old Tamerlan Tsarnaev, is the other suspect. He was killed by police overnight in Watertown. Boston University's NPR affiliate WBUR-FM was airing wall-to-wall coverage of the new developments. Greater Media was interspersing news coverage from Boston’s local ABC-TV affiliate on its five music FMs, along with updates from the stations' own on-air talent. Clear Channel and Entercom stations were also providing updates and airing calls from listeners talking about the news. Offices for Greater Media and Entercom were open to essential staff only. Clear Channel's CHR-Top40 "Kiss 108" WXKS-FM "Matty in the Morning" suspended music and was talking with listeners and providing updated information. The station said the live show would continue on-air in that mode "for as long as needed."
Kansas City Public Television Acquiring '90.9 The Bridge' KTBG-FM
Kansas City Public Television (KCPT) has agreed to purchase NPR News and Triple-A "90.9 The Bridge" KTBG-FM, Warrensburg-Kansas City, Missouri, from the University of Central Missouri for $1.7 million, which includes $600,000 for improvements and upgrades. The letter of intent permitting the acquisition of UCM's campus-based radio station was signed April 18 by the UCM Board of Governors, according to a Friday news release. "This is a decision that was made after carefully considering our overall mission and the university's recent academic and administrative reviews," says UCM President Charles Ambrose. "The university is very pleased with the overall agreement with Kansas City Public Television. In conjunction with transferring ownership of KTBG, we are also establishing an exciting, multi-dimensional relationship with KCPT and the Kansas City community, which will greatly benefit both parties." Says KCPT CEO and President Kliff Kuehl, "This is an incredible opportunity for KCPT to extend its reach into the community and develop new relationships with our public media partners in Warrensburg. KTBG has developed a strong following of listeners with an exceptional programming line-up of music and local services. We're thrilled to be able to share this community asset with an even greater audience in the Kansas City region." The news release notes that "KTBG currently operates on the 90.9 FM frequency as licensed by the Federal Communications Commission. Through the transaction with UCM, KCPT is purchasing the rights to operate on this frequency, which must be approved by the FCC." Says Ambrose, "This agreement with KCPT provides a new collaboration structure that allows us to explore meaningful opportunities that will ultimately benefit UCM, our students, KCPT and its audiences. KCPT has an established national reputation as an excellent public broadcaster and through the elements of our future relationship our combined efforts will serve and benefit our respective and collective stakeholders." Veteran Chicago Program Director Barry James to Retire from Radio
Hubbard Radio Adult Hits "Rewind 100.3" WILV-FM, Chicago, Program Director Barry "BJ" James announces his retirement after 36 years in the radio industry. James says he will retire from the station and broadcasting on May 17, his 20th anniversary with Hubbard. James was named Program Director for Hot AC clustermate "101.9 The Mix" WTMX-FM in 1993, and was promoted to VP of Programming three years later, before adding programming duties for WILV-FM in late 2004. He was Operations Manager of "Y98" KYKY-FM, St. Louis, until 1993. "During my interview with [Hubbard Radio COO] Drew Horowitz in May of 1993, he mentioned that I should really settle in and stay a while in my next position," says James. "I took that to heart and enjoyed an amazing 20-year run!" Hubbard Radio Chicago VP of Programming and Operations Greg Solk tells us, "BJ has had a run most broadcasters dream of. Inbetween Barry's many passions that include aviation, scuba diving, motorcycles, playing the drums and racing cars, Barry has been a dear friend and a brilliant programming partner to me and our Chicago teams for two decades. We are thrilled for Barry and his next chapter." James says his future includes racing cars and motorcycles. "I've been racing cars and motorcycles since I was old enough to point one down the track." He adds, "So, I'm retiring from radio after 36 years and taking a dream opportunity with VMP Superchargers, a performance motorsports company based in Central Florida." Seven More Members of Congress Supporting LRFA
Even as Congressional opposition is launched against the Local Radio Freedom Act, six more House members and another Senator have signed onto the non-binding resolution that opposes "any new performance fee, tax, royalty, or other charge" on local broadcast radio stations. The LRFA is now currently co-sponsored by 124 Members of the House and 10 Senators. Earlier this month a bipartisan group of nine House members and another Senator signed onto the resolution supporting local, free, over-the-air radio. Adding their support to the act this week are Reps. Jim Bridenstine (OK), Christoper Gibson (NY), Jim Jordan (OH), Mark Meadows (NC), Mick Mulvaney (SC) and Tom Reed (NY). Senator John Boozman (R-AR) is the latest lawmaker to sign onto its companion resolution in the Senate. Reps. Michael Conaway (R-TX) and Gene Green (D-TX) introduced the Local Radio Freedom Act (H. Con. Res. 16) in the House on February 15 along with 71 additional co-sponsors. An identical resolution (S. Con. Res. 6) was introduced in the Senate on March 6 by Senators John Barrasso (R-WY) and Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND). These are the new 2013 versions of the LRFA which are virtually identical to those from last year. Yesterday we reported that a bipartisan group of Congress members -- Darrell Issa (R-CA), John Conyers (D-MI), Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) and Melvin Watt (D-CA.) -- have sent a letter to their colleagues urging them not to co-sponsor the LRFA. Confirmed: Jersey Shore's 'Breeze' Blows Away
Earlier this week, we told you that a "change is reportedly 'in the air' at Press Communications AC 'The Breeze 107.1 and 99.7' WWZY-FM, Long Branch, and WBHX-FM, Tuckerton, NJ." We've now learned from Press Communications that the stations is rebranding as "107.1 FM" -- with the slogan "A Music Radio Station" -- and a scaled-back music library.
More 'Bull' - This Time Down South at WMUV-FM
Renda Broadcasting Country WMUV-FM, Brunswick, Georgia-Jacksonville, Florida, rebrands from "Country 100.7" to "Bull 100.7" less than two months after changing the format from Classic Country "Country Legends 100.7" to a mainstream Country format. With the name change, for the first time since the late 1980′s, the station is changing its focus from the Jacksonville market and focusing on Southern Georgia. New on-air imaging for the station is promoting "South Georgia’s Big Old Bull." Lance Venta reports that Renda also owns Country '99.9 Gator Country' WGNE-FM in Jacksonville, and removing WMUV-FM from the Jacksonville market makes it a two way competition between WGNE-FM and Clear Channel’s WQIK-FM for the Country audience in Jacksonville. Clear Channel Albany Announces Two New Appointments
Clear Channel Media and Entertainment Albany announces a pair of new appointments. Shanna joins Hot AC "99.5 The River" WRVE-FM as the new morning co-host, and CHR-Top40 "Kiss 102.3" WKKF-FM afternoon host D Scott is named Assistant PD for WKKF-FM. Both appointments are effective immediately. Shanna -- who will co-host alongside Kevin Rush weekday mornings from 5-10am on "The River" -- joins from "Kiss 98.5" Buffalo, where she spent the last few years as an on-air talent. "I'm excited to further my radio career with Clear Channel Media and Entertainment Albany," says Shanna. "I'm looking forward to getting to know our listeners and exploring the Capital Region." WRVE-FM Program Director Randy McCarten tells us, "Shanna's personality alongside our current co-host Kevin Rush will help our Capital Region listeners wake up with a smile each morning. They are both excited to get out and have some fun with River listeners." D Scott has been with "Kiss 102.3" since 2011. In addition to his new role as Assistant PD, he will continue to host weekdays from 2-7pm. He's been in the radio industry for more than 14 years and started his career as a Producer for "American Top 40 with Kasey Kasem." Since then, D Scott has held a variety of on-air positions including hosting weekend and evening shows in Albany. CBS Sports Radio Adds Two New Weekend Shows
CBS Sports Radio adds two new weekend shows. Beginning this weekend, "Eye on Baseball" with host Damon Bruce will air Saturdays 10am-12noon ET, focusing on Major League Baseball news and headlines. Bruce will be joined by a rotating group of sports experts who will serve as co-host. Bruce is based out KNBR-AM, San Francisco, where he hosts "The Damon Bruce Show" weekdays from 12-3pm. The former ESPN talent also currently serves as post-game host for San Francisco 49ers games. Also, CBS Sports Radio debuts the weekly program "Eye on Basketball" this Saturday from 6-8pm. The show will be hosted by Jody "Jody Mac" McDonald and CBSSports.com's NBA insider Ken Berger. The duo will explore the latest NBA topics and breaking stories. McDonald, a 25-year Sports Talk veteran, was an inaugural member of WFAN-AM, New York. He's hosted middays at WFAN; WIP-AM-FM, Philadelphia; and ESPN New York, as well as afternoon drive at Sports Talk "The Fanatic" WPEN-FM, Philadelphia, and a SiriusXM program. Award winning journalist Berger serves as the NBA expert for CBSSports.com.
Jelli Receives Second Patent:
Social radio platform Jelli has been awarded a second patent from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office -- this one for “Dynamic selection of advertising content in a social broadcast environment,” which describes methods related to determining advertising content to be included in a broadcast dynamically. These methods are based on a broad set of inclusion criteria, including among other factors, audience targeting (demographics, location), audience feedback, advertiser bidding, third party advertising technology parameters, according to Jelli Chief Technology Officer and co-founder Jateen Parekh. The dynamic selection for ad content patent follows Jelli's first patent last month for "Social Broadcasting User Experience." At that time, as we reported on March 26, Jelli CEO Mike Dougherty told us, "Jelli has made a significant R&D investment in both the technology, platform and underlying intellectual property around user-controlled broadcasting. This technology combines the reach of broadcast with the social engagement of the web, to unlock value for users, broadcasters and advertisers alike. We are pleased to receive a fundamental patent in this area to protect the innovations of our team, for our company and partners." Reporting the second patent, on its website, Jelli writes: "More patent goodness at Jelli, supporting our technology innovation! On the heels of receiving our first patent, we have now received our second patent." After summarizing the same information sent us in their news release, Jelli adds, "Broadcasting is defined broadly as any one-to-many communication regardless of transmission method (e.g., terrestrial, digital, satellite, streaming, etc.) or broadcast medium (e.g., radio, television, in venue, etc.). We are adding to the intellectual property of the company in this important area of advertising." Detroit '89X' PD Jay Hudson Shares Boston Marathon Experience
Bell Media Detroit market Alternative "89X" CIMX-FM, Windsor, Ontario, Program Director and afternoon host Jay Hudson ran in the April 15 Boston Marathon, finishing the race before the marathon bombings began. Hudson says he had already crossed the finish line and was sitting inside a bar about quarter mile from the finish line when the first bomb exploded. He's shared his experiences in audio from his "89X" afternoon show. Courtesy of CIMX-FM, we have that audio.

The FCC was created to protect consumers, not as a lobbying arm of the entertainment industry! And yet once again, families lose out and Hollywood gets to push its anything goes agenda on the rest of us." The PTC is asking parents to protect their children from "More Sex! More F-bombs! More Profanity! More Nudity!" by taking action to contact the FCC before May 20 -- the deadline for comments in the Commission's proceeding -- even providing a clickable link (with instructions for a "formal submittal") and a "suggeted example of a comment you can submit." As we reported early this month, the FCC is seeking comments on its indecency policy, asking how they should enforce their indecency policies following last year's Supreme Court ruling that the Commission can indeed do so, but needs to clearly spell out what the policy actually is, in a manner which can be evenly enforced, and which broadcasters can understand. While the ruling backed the FCC, it also called for less vague standards than have been enforced.

Alternative "96X" WROX-FM, Norfolk, Virginia, Program Director and afternoon host James Steele exits after nearly six years at the station. Assistant PD/Music Director and morning host Nick Chappell is promoted to Program Director ... Triple-A/AC hybrid KBHR-FM, Big Bear City, California, Program Director/Music Director Mike Evans resigns and exits after six years, eight with owner Parallel Broadcasting. Evans says he will relocate and seek new opportunities in the Palm Springs area -- noting "it is time for me to move to the desert permanently and explore my career options" ... Also from KBHR-FM, announcer Jay Tunnell exits after 17 years to go to Lake Havasu, Arizona, and work for a four station group there. And Rick Bates, best known for his Friday evening "Blues on the Bear" show, is named KBHR-FM Music Director.
Succeeding Franklin as President of Cox Media Group will be Bill Hoffman (pictured right), who currently serves as an EVP at Cox Media Group. In this role, Hoffman oversees the majority of the company’s radio and television operations, as well as its corporate revenue efforts. "Bill is a talented, senior executive who will provide strong leadership, continuity and direction at Cox Media Group," Kennedy adds. "His innate understanding of the integration of broadcast, print and digital media will help ensure Cox outlets maintain their enviable rankings in a highly-competitive media landscape." Prior to serving as EVP, Hoffman was VP/GM of the company's WSB-TV in Atlanta. He joined Cox in 1979 as an account representative at TeleRep and has held a number of roles within the company. Hoffman serves on the ABC board of governors as its current chairman, on the board of directors of the Anti-Defamation League, Southeast Region and Chattahoochee Riverkeeper.
"Now, in 2013, we're thrilled to extend our Broncos coverage to a wider audience with the addition of 103.5 The Fox as our FM simulcast partner. This new Broncos agreement, along with recent long term extensions with the Colorado Rockies and University of Colorado Football and Basketball, will ensure 850 KOA remains the play-by-play sports destination for Colorado's sports fans." Broncos SVP of Business Development Mac Freeman adds, "The Denver Broncos and 850 KOA have a partnership spanning more than four decades and we are excited to continue that Rocky Mountain tradition. The new simulcast agreement with 103.5 The Fox will further enhance our ability to reach fans with a first-class radio broadcast."
Allowing time for relocating those shows accounts for the delay in the WGST-AM flip until June 3 from the April announcement.
