Friday's Radio & Media News - March 1, 2013

Baltazar Returns to Boston to Co-Host Mornings on 'Hot 96.9'

Baltazar

Greater Media announces that Baltazar has been reunited with Pebbles as co-host of the new "Baltazar and Pebbles Morning Show" on Rhythmic AC "Hot 96.9" WTKK-FM, Boston. The new show debuts Monday (March 4). Baltazar most recently was the morning host at CBS Radio Hot AC "Now 100.5" KZZO-FM, Sacramento. Prior to that, Baltazar hosted mornings on Clear Channel Rhythmic CHR "Jam'n 94.5" WJMN-FM, Boston, with Pebbles, from 1994-2001. The duo will officially return to the Boston radio airwaves after being apart for 12 years. "I had to pinch myself and ask if this was a dream to reunite with my radio soul mate, Pebbles, who I enjoyed such great chemistry and success with in Boston," says Baltazar. "What a winning formula: Rob Williams as front office genius, Cadillac Jack as the masterful coach and Pebbles as my playmaker. I can't wait to say hello to Boston and rekindle our amazing relationship!" Greater Media Boston Director of Programming Cadillac Jack McCartney tells us, "2013 is shaping up to be a very good year for the All New Hot 96.9. The list is very small of radio personalities in America who would, on day one, already have a raving fan base in Boston, proven chemistry with Pebbles, and a great sense of humor to top it all off. Baltazar brings that and more to our station. I am very pleased to be able to add another 'A' talent to the team and reunite Baltazar and Pebbles for the first time in over 12 years for the listeners of Boston." On February 22, we reported that Baltazar had exited "100.5 Now FM" KZZO-FM, Sacramento.

Milwaukee's WMCS-AM Flips to '1290 Martini Radio' WZTI-AM

1290 Martini Radio

Former African American Talk WMCS-AM, Milwaukee, flips to Adult Standards "1290 Martini Radio" WZTI-AM. Stan Atlkinson is named Operations Manager for the Milwaukee Radio Alliance station. "We're looking forward to bringing a unique sounding radio station to Milwaukee," says Atlkinson. "It's Rat Pack meets brat pack and it will be fun to listen to." Tom Calococci

Former Beasley Broadcast Group Rhythmic CHR "Power 96" WPOW-FM, Miami, Program Director Tom Calococci is named Program Director for Cox Media Group's AC "97.3 The Coast" WFLC-FM, Miami. "Tom's passion, creativity, expertise and excellent track record of developing and coaching successful on-air talent, makes him the perfect candidate to lead 97.3 The Coast to the top of the ratings in the Miami/Ft Lauderdale market," says CMG Miami VP and Market Manager Dan Kearney. "After spending the past two years dabbling in the film and television industry, I couldn't be more excited to be making my return to radio," says Calococci. "I'm also making my return to the place I now consider home, South Florida. This move also re-unites me with CMG Director of Programming, Steve Smith, and I'm thrilled to be joining the CMG team in Miami to work with Market Manager, Dan Kearney and his incredible team, including CMG's Steve Hunter, format captain for Hot AC!" Smith adds, "The last time Tom and I worked together, he was tireless, a true programming warrior who couldn't sleep at night until he was on top. Andrew Z Ordered to Stop 'App Radio' Show,
Says He Will Ignore Cumulus Cease/Desist Order

Andrew Z

Former "Star 105" WWWM-FM, Toledo, morning host Andrew Z (Zepeda) has been served him with a "cease and desist" order from Cumulus Media for relaunching his show using a smartphone app, claiming that violates a non-compete agreement with his former station. But Zepeda says he will ignore the C&D order. "Star 105" fired Andrew Z in December after he was convicted of charges related to a 2010 break-in he allegedly orchestrated at the pizzeria he formerly owned. The station fired him after the sentence was issued. WWWM-FM had just signed Zepeda to a multi-year extension earlier in the year while the charges were pending. Zepeda says he will continue the show via a free mobile app called "Toledo's APP Station." His lawyer agrees with the decision. "We don't believe that the noncompete applies to Web radio and we're pretty adamant about that," says attorney Beau Harvey. "Specifically with Andrew, they've limited his scope to the local business area -- in other words, Toledo -- whereas the web reaches the world. We don't believe there's any competition whatsoever. They are different entities." Cumulus Toledo General Manager Matt Spaulding, of course, disagrees. He says of the non-compete: "Typically its engaging in any type of competitive business whether on-air, online or any of the like within a certain radius of where he or she was previously employed." Zepeda was fired after he was sentenced to 30 days in the Wood County jail and placed on probation for five years.

FCC Affirms Contest Violation Fine for Boston's WMJX-FM

WMJX-FM

The FCC affirms its $4,000 fine against Greater Media AC "Magic 106.7" WMJX-FM, Boston, for "misleading information" in its May 2008 "Win a Car" contest. A complainant told the Commission that the station's contest promos said the winner would win one of three new cars. After qualifying to win the grand prize, the complainant discovered that the grand prize was a two-year lease on the selected car, but only if the winner had good credit. According to WJMX, while promos said there would be a chance for the winner to choose from three different cars, only the complete rules on the station web site specified that the prize was a lease with a credit restriction. The station also acknowledged that promos didn't mention the rules posted on its website. The FCC ruled that the contest was promoted with "misleading information that did not fully disclose to the listening audience the contest's material terms." The Commission's also said that the promos did not include an accurate description of the prize, the prize's value, the eligibility requirements or a referral to a place to access the complete rules. The FCC's rule concerning licensee-conducted contests states that "a licensee that broadcasts or advertises information about a contest it conducts shall fully and accurately disclose the material terms of the contest, and shall conduct the contest substantially as announced or advertised. No contest description shall be false, misleading or deceptive with respect to any material term."

Pandora to Limit Free Mobile Listening

Pandora

Pandora will discontinue its free unlimited mobile listening plan -- and limit some listeners to 40 hours per month. The cap is intended to curb the streaming service's high royalty costs. Pandora says, however, the new plan will affect only "a small number" of its users. Pandora founder Tim Westergren writes, "This week we will begin communicating directly with a small number of our listeners as we introduce a 40-hour-per-month limit on free mobile listening. Most of you reading this will never hit the limit. In fact, it will affect less than 4% of our total monthly active listeners. For perspective, the average listener spends approximately 20 hours listening to Pandora across all devices in any given month. That said, limiting listening is a very unusual thing to do, and very contrary to our mission so we wanted to share a quick explanation. Pandora's per-track royalty rates have increased more than 25% over the last 3 years, including 9% in 2013 alone and are scheduled to increase an additional 16% over the next two years. After a close look at our overall listening, a 40-hour-per-month mobile listening limit allows us to manage these escalating costs with minimal listener disruption. For listeners who do hit the limit, we have a variety of options available to keep the music you love flowing. Listen for free for as many hours as desired on desktop and laptop computers; pay $0.99 for unlimited listening for the remainder of that month, or subscribe to Pandora One for unlimited listening and no advertising. In short, this is an effort to balance the reality of increasing royalty costs with our desire to maximize access to free listening on Pandora. We will be sure to alert any of our listeners that start getting close to the 40 hour limit. As always, your feedback is welcome."

TuneIn Launching 'TuneIn Live' User Interface

TuneIn

TuneIn is adding a new customized graphical interface to its web and iPad versions -- "TuneIn Live" -- offering rotating tiles with music, sports, and news information based on the logged-in user's listening habits and interests. "TuneIn Live" will be added to the service's other mobile apps later this year. "Our biggest opportunity has been discovery," says CEO John Donham. "We have more than 70,000 radio stations and more than 2 million on-demand programs from around the world, and that's a lot for anyone to digest. We needed a sophisticated system to do the work for our listeners, not ask them to do extra work in order to personalize their experience. TuneIn Live is a big part of that system." Donham adds, "Every day, there are thousands of live events on the radio, from concerts to interviews to sports to a DJ playing a set of songs and, until now, there has never been a way to relay all of this live content to people worldwide. That's where we're innovating with TuneIn Live. We're combing through our millions of listening options from around the world and, for each individual listener, we’re bringing into focus just the stations that mean something to them."

Entravision Q4 Revenue Up 28%

Entravision

Entravision Communications, reporting its fourth quarter and full year 2012 fiscal results, says Q4 net revenue grew by 28 percent to $63.75 million, and the company went from a net loss in the year-ago period to net income of almost $7.7 million. Entravision reports fourth quarter radio revenue increased 16%, led by a 45% gain in national ad sales. For the full year, net revenue was up by 15 percent to $223.25 million, while going from a 2011 net loss of $8.2 million to net income of $13.6 million. Says Entravision Chairman/CEO Walter Ulloa, "During 2012, we achieved double-digit revenue growth primarily driven by increases in political advertising, core advertising, and retransmission consent revenue. Core revenue (excluding retransmission consent revenue and political advertising revenue) from our television and radio segments outperformed their respective industry averages, and we significantly improved our free cash flow over 2011. Our television and radio platforms have become an increasingly important channel for reaching Hispanic voters, resulting in significant increases in political advertising revenue. Our audience shares remain strong in the nation's most densely populated Hispanic markets, and we believe we are well positioned to benefit as the U.S. Hispanic market continues to expand and advertisers increasingly recognize the importance of reaching our target audience."

Their "Annual Music Study 2012" reports the number of consumers using peer-to-peer (P2P) services to download music fell by 17 percent last year, compared to 2011. When P2P file sharing peaked in 2005, one in five Internet users aged 13+ (33 million people) used P2P services to download music. Last year that number fell to 11 percent (21 million people). The volume of illegally downloaded music files from P2P services also declined 26 percent, compared to the previous year; however the NPD Group found that P2P wasn't the only sharing activity to shrink. Music files burned and ripped from CDs owned by friends and family fell 44 percent, the number of files swapped from hard drives dropped 25 percent, and the volume of music downloads from digital lockers decreased 28 percent. According to the NPD study, 40 percent of consumers who had illegally downloaded music via P2P services in 2011 reported that they had stopped or downloaded less music from P2P networks. The primary reason given for this decline in file sharing was an increased use of free, legal music streaming services. Nearly half of those who stopped or curtailed file sharing cited the use of streaming services as their primary reason for stopping or reducing their file-sharing activity. "For the music industry, which has been battling digital piracy for over a decade, last year was a year of progress," says Russ Crupnick, SVP of Industry Analysis at NPD. :Among other factors, the increased use of legal and licensed streaming services has proven to be an alternative for music fans who formerly used P2P networks to obtain music." More than two years after Limewire was shut down, nearly 20 percent of P2P users who reduced or stopped their P2P activity cited the fact that that their preferred service was closed, or that the services they used created issues with spyware and viruses. "In recent years, we’ve seen less P2P activity, because the music industry has successfully used litigation to shut down Limewire and other services; many of those who continued to use P2P services reported poor experiences, due to rampant spyware and viruses on illegal P2P sites," added Crupnick.

WXKS-AM/Boston Ditching Comedy for Biz News

Matty's Comedy 1200

"Matty's Comedy 1200" WXKS-AM, Boston, apparently believes the All Comedy format isn't making enough people laugh (or even chuckle). The Clear Channel station is set to flip to Business News airing Bloomberg Radio, March 1. WXKS-AM launched "Matty's Comedy 1200" last year when it ditched a News Talk format. The "Matty" came from sister CHR-Top40 morning host Matty Siegel who supposedly chose the content to make people laugh (or at least chuckle). And in case the new Business News format's content makes people especially unhappy, they can get an HD Radio receiver and listen to the displaced Comedy format on the HD2 channel of WJMN-FM, according to Clear Channel Boston -- which reportedly wasn't happy with the lack of audience for "Matty's Comedy" at 1200 AM. (We hope that at least the way we reported this item will make at least one person chuckle.)

Java Joel Named APD/MD at Cleveland's 'Kiss'

Java Joel

Clear Channel CHR-Top40 "96.5 Kiss FM" WAKS-FM, Cleveland, afternoon host Java Joel is upped to Assistant PD and Music Director, effective immediately. He will continue hosting the afternoon show, and also remains Music Director for Adult Variety Hits clustermate "106.5 The Lake" WHLK-FM. "Kiss" Program Director Bo Matthews tells us, "He has been assisting with these efforts since he made the move to afternoons in December. He possesses an unquestionable passion for the position, and will help take WAKS to great places. He has done an outstanding job in his positions and will continue great work in his expanded role." Matthews didn't tell us if he calls his new APD "Java" or "Joel" when he's not on the air.

Sun Replaces Dial Global as TRN Rep

TRN

Talk Radio Network ends its advertising sales and affiliate relations relationship with Dial Global, signing a new agreementl with Sun Broadcast Group. Sun will now provide national ad sales representation and assist in station affiliation for all products of Talk Radio Network. The new partnership expands the firm's portfolio of news, talk and entertainment programming that Sun has represented since 2008. TRN's lineup of talent includes the recently launched "The Andrea Tantaros Show," along with Jerry Doyle, Rusty Humphries, Phil Hendrie and others. Says Sun Broadcast Group CEO Jason Bailey, "In this day of safe, personality driven radio, the stable of talent that TRN continues to expand is something we are very proud to present to our agency partners. From new entertaining talk products to amazingly produced long form news, I believe the iconic brands that have put their faith and trust in Sun over these last several years will be excited to become part of this new direction in network programming." TRN CEO Mark Masters tells us, "We look forward to a long and prosperous alliance with Sun Broadcast Group. Jason and his team understand what it takes to succeed in radio today. We are pleased that our products will be well represented with Sun as we continue to grow each and every one of the TRN companies." TRN's split from Dial Global had been expected since last August when TRN sued Dial Global in U.S. District Court seeking to use federal antitrust laws to break up the company.

Veteran radio/media reporter Tom Taylor, in his "Now" newsletter, notes that in January, "13-year TRN executive Jim Watkins joined Florida-based Sun as its new VP of Programming," as he reports TRN's switch from Dial Global to Sun. Although we reported Watkins move last month, we didn't make that connection until we read Taylor's Thursday (Feb. 28) report.

Tuesday's Top News Reports (Feb. 26, 2013)

FCC Delays Media Cross-Ownership Ruling

FCC

FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski has agreed to put the media cross-ownership ruling on hold for a short time to complete an impact study requested by the Minority Media and Telecommunications Council. The MMTC made the request in a letter to the Commission. Says Genachowski in a statement: "The study is expected to take several weeks and will be filed with the Commission, after which MMTC suggests that the agency solicit public input, to be followed by a Commission vote. In this heavily-litigated area where a strong record is particularly important, I believe this is a sensible approach to moving forward and resolving the issues raised in this proceeding." According to Broadcasting & Cable's John Eggerton, a senior official called the approach "a strategy to move towards a successful vote and strengthen the Commission's position in court." Genachowski says, "The study addresses an issue of importance, will augment the record, and will assist the Commission in resolving the issues before it is on the full record."

FCC Commissioner Robert McDowell isn't as strongly in favor of the delay, but says he does back a "prudent process" -- with limits. In his own statement, McDowell says: "Although I firmly believe that the record regarding the Commission's newspaper/broadcast and radio/television cross-ownership policies more than sufficiently justifies the immediate elimination of these outdated rules, I respect adhering to a prudent process that allows for the submission of the proposed Minority Media and Telecommunications Council study, along with expedient but adequate public comment. The Commission's review should be swift and sound. Not only did Congress intend for us to eliminate obsolete rules once more competition becomes evident, but it also meant for us to act with alacrity in our review. Accordingly, it is my hope that this most recent pause in our progress on this front is our last. I look forward to a substantive vote to modernize our rules by this summer."

Milwaukee's African American WMCS-AM Changing Formats

WMCS-AM

The Milwaukee Radio Alliance has ended the African American Talk format of WMCS-AM, Milwaukee, with most all of the on-air staff ousted. A new format, yet to be revealed, is expected to be launched soon. For now the station is stunting -- currently with all Elvis music. Duane Dudek of Milwaukee's Journal Sentinel reports that the format change was described as a "business decision" by Bill Hurwitz, VP of the Milwaukee Radio Alliance, a partnership of Willie Davis' All Pro Broadcasting and Times Shamrock. "This decision was made by the owners, plural," Hurwitz is quoted as saying. He said that WMCS-AM "has been losing money for a decade," with low ratings and a limited ad base. "Stations like this, basically super serving the African American community especially on AM, don't exist in this country," said Hurwitz. "If not for Willie, the station would have been gone a long time ago." He called the decision "the hardest thing I've ever done in 40-years in broadcasting." Other reports from Milwaukee say all on-air staffers have been released, except Phil Anderson, who hosts the nightly "Blues After Dark." WMCS-AM has been serving Milwaukee's African American community for more than 20 years. A new website for the station is "under construction" at its existing 1290WMCS.com url, where you can listen as the current stunting continues.

RAB/Borrell Report: Radio Growing Digital Sales Share

Radio Websites

Radio gained digital share in 2012, and it looks like many stations are building on that momentum in 2013, according to a report issued by Borrell Associates on behalf of the RAB. And there appears to be significant profit in local digital sales operations, the report concludes. The report -- "Benchmarking: Local Radio Stations’ Online Revenues" -- says that radio grew its online ad revenues 22% last year, outpacing the 20% overall increase in local online ad expenditures. That was enough to achieve a share increase of two-tenths of a point, to 2%. The report is based on Borrell's annual industry-wide survey on more than 6,200 local online operations, including more than 2,000 radio stations in 527 clusters. This report analyzes data derived from three principal sources: media ad revenue, local business ad spending, and a special radio manager survey asking questions about digital revenue resources, sales methods, expenses and other digital operations. "In terms of digital advertising, radio has been in a come-from-behind position for years," says Borrell Associates CEO Gordon Borrell. "But it looks like quite a few groups are breaking out and even challenging their newspaper and TV competitors for a slice of that very large digital pie. I hope the data in this report will show radio general managers and general sales managers that it is entirely possible to generate millions in digital sales, and that there's a high likelihood that these sales hold significant profit margins."

Overall, radio sellers closed $370.7 million in local online advertising last year. Borrell expects the number to pass $420 million this year as many radio groups double down on digital sales efforts. Much of that growth will be fueled by stations budgeting for unusually high growth. In a survey of 1,075 radio stations administered in January as part of the report, 17% said they expect growth of 30% or more this year. There's more good news for radio, according to the report. Stations are diverting their focus from banner advertising and branching out to sell other, more popular formats like email advertising, paid search and even video ads. While banner ads were the largest single source of revenue for 32% of the stations who participated in the survey, the number dropped to 22% for 2013. "Digital strategy among radio stations and groups is varied," says RAB President and CEO Erica Farber. "Revenue opportunities continue to grow for those who are pushing the digital limits with online and mobile initiatives. As radio further defines and focuses on monetizing their digital platforms and applications, we will continue to see growth for radio in revenue and market share." The full study is available to RAB members on the RAB.com website. A free webinar featuring the study results will also be presented by the RAB, March 7. Katz Study Confirms Audio's Power to Extend Ad Brand Presence

eye vs ear

Katz Marketing Solutions, the national marketing arm of the Katz Media Group, today (Feb. 25) announced its findings of a new study that quantified the importance of audio elements in successful television commercials. The results show that audio, or radio, can efficiently and cost-effectively enhance a brand’s identification and messaging. The study examined television commercials from 14 major brands including Allstate, Apple, Capital One, CoverGirl, Diet Pepsi, DirectTV, Dos Equis, Duracell, GEICO, Old Spice, Outback Steakhouse, Snickers, Taco Bell, and Warner Brothers. All audio and visual brand references were removed, and 300 respondents were served either the de-branded television clip or an audio-only version of the same clip. The respondents were asked to identify the brand, pinpoint their "aha" moment of recognition, and describe their emotional response to the audio and video segments. Overall, the audio clips generated 93% of the brand identification metrics that the television commercial clips generated. Even with the absence of visual stimuli, consumers were able to correctly identify the brands being featured in the ads. The results also indicated that in certain instances audio triggered brand identification at a much greater rate than visual cues. For example, 25% of the respondents exposed to the Taco Bell television clip referenced visual cues as the brand trigger, while 55% mentioned the sound of the iconic Taco Bell “bong” as the “aha” branding moment. In Duracell’s television clip, 50% more viewers referenced its distinctive three-note audio signature as the brand trigger than any visual stimuli. And for Outback Steakhouse, four times as many respondents cited the announcer’s distinguishing voice as the brand trigger than any visual element of the commercial. The audio clips alone also prompted emotional responses in respondents. For the Warner Brothers' movie, "The Hobbit," as many respondents to the audio clip expressed excitement and desire to see the movie as those exposed to the television clip. In Taco Bell’s case, the audio clip generated mentions of hunger almost as often as those exposed to the television clip. For CoverGirl, the audio clip was just as likely to invoke feelings of happiness as the television clip.

"In these days of tighter budgets and intensified focus on ROI, advertisers must maximize ad budget impact in every way possible," says Bob McCurdy, President of Katz Marketing Solutions. "Marketers often allocate large sums of ad dollars to broadcast television commercials, which results in the creation of tremendous audio equity—a brand’s audio logo or signature–that can continue to carry the marketing punch of a television commercial. This data strongly supports the strategic and creative use of radio to supplement a television campaign." The complete study results are available at www.raisingthevolume.com/eyevsear. "This study and additional data-driven analyses are part of Katz Marketing Solutions’ ongoing efforts to provide in-depth research on the power of sound and the listening habits of consumers," says a news release. "The division is one of the first media sales organizations to partner with USA TouchPoints, the most comprehensive syndicated research product to track all forms of consumer behavior and media consumption. In addition, Katz Marketing Solutions also works closely with Ipsos MediaCT to conduct ongoing evaluations of radio campaigns in order to relay radio’s key branding metrics and improve campaign efficacy."

Todd Schnitt Hires New Attorney As He Seeks New Bubba Trial

Bubba-Schnitt

Todd Schnitt has hired a new attorney as he seeks a new trial in his defamation case against Bubba the Love Sponge Clem. Schnitt has hired lawyer Wil Florin to replace Phillip Campbell and Jonathan Ellis who handled the first trial. Campbell's DUI arrest during that trial became both a news story of its own and a part of the civil suit's proceedings. The announcement that Schnitt has hired Florin follows reports that the radio personality had fired Campbell and Ellis. The Tampa Bay Times reports that Schnitt's "decision comes in the midst of a flurry of legal activity in the wake of the first trial, a loss for Schnitt that ended with accusations that Clem's attorneys hatched a DUI setup plot involving a young female paralegal." A managing partner at Campbell's law firm released a statement that says: "We continue to believe in the Schnitts' causes of action and hope that they are ultimately able to bring an end to the attacks on them personally and their personal reputations in this community." On January 30, as we reported at the time, jurors found that Clem did not defame Schnitt and his wife with comments he had made about them when the two radio personalities were direct morning show competitors in the Tampa market.

Fitch Has Concerns About Clear Channel's Financial Future

Fitch Ratings

Fitch Ratings has assigned a "CCC/RR4" rating to Clear Channel's "$575 million senior secured priority guarantee note (PGN) due 2021. The notes will rank pari passu with the existing secured credit facilities and the existing secured PGN. Fitch currently has a 'CCC' Issuer Default Rating (IDR) on Clear Channel." This follows last week's announcement that Clear Channel plans to offer $500 million in notes, due in 2021, in a private offering. Fitch notes that the "CCC/RR4" rating refelects the expectation "that the enterprise value of the company will be maximized in a restructuring scenario (going concern), rather than a liquidation." Fitch adds that its ratings concerns also "center on the company's highly leveraged capital structure, with significant maturities in 2016 (approximately $10 billion); the considerable and growing interest burden that pressures FCF; technological threats and secular pressures in radio broadcasting; and the company's exposure to cyclical advertising revenue. The ratings are supported by the company's leading position in both the outdoor and radio industries, as well as the positive fundamentals and digital opportunities in the outdoor advertising space."

Arbitron Reports Q4 Net Income Down,
Full Year 2012 Net Income Up 6.8%

Arbitron

Arbitron reports fourth quarter net income was down, to $13.4 million, or $0.50 per share (diluted), compared with $14.1 million, or $0.51 per share (diluted) for Q4 2011. The company says, "Net income in the fourth quarter 2012 was reduced by $5.2 million pre-tax—which is $0.18 per share (diluted)—due to consulting, legal, and other expenses related to the pending acquisition of Arbitron by Nielsen Holdings." Net income for the full year 2012 increased 6.8 percent to $56.9 million compared with $53.3 million for 2011. GAAP earnings per share (diluted) for the full year 2012 were $2.11 compared with $1.93 per share (diluted) in the prior year. "Excluding expenses directly related to the pending acquisition, earnings per share (diluted) for the fourth quarter and full year 2012 would have been $0.68 and $2.29 respectively. Compared to 2011 earnings per share (diluted) excluding a $3.5 million non-operating impairment charge (or $0.07 per diluted share) taken in the fourth quarter of last year, pro-forma earnings per share (diluted) in 2012 increased 17.2 percent for the quarter and 14.5 percent for the year." The company reported revenue of $124.7 million during the fourth quarter of 2012, an increase of $4.6 million or 3.8 percent, compared to revenue of $120.1 million during the fourth quarter of 2011. Costs and expenses for the fourth quarter 2012 were $106.6 million, an increase of $7.1 million or 7.1 percent over costs and expenses of $99.5 million in the fourth quarter 2011. This increase was primarily due to expenses related to the pending acquisition by Nielsen, additional cost of revenue for the PPM service, and additional Scarborough royalties due to increased sales of those services. Earnings before interest and income tax expense (EBIT) was $24.7 million in the fourth quarter of 2012, as compared to $23.8 million in the fourth quarter 2011. Excluding both the costs for the pending Nielsen transaction recorded in the fourth quarter 2012 and a non-operating impairment charge taken in the fourth quarter 2011, EBIT in the fourth quarter 2012 would have been $29.9 million, and EBIT in fourth quarter 2011 would have been $27.3 million. For the full year, says Arbitron, revenue was $449.9 million, an increase of 6.5 percent or $27.5 million, as compared to revenue of $422.3 million in 2011. Revenue in 2012 increased primarily due to growth in revenue for PPM-based ratings service, in part due to the nearly completed phase-in of contracted PPM price increases. Revenue in 2012 also grew due to an increase in Scarborough qualitative service revenue, an increase in Diary-based ratings service revenue, and an increase in revenue for the Arbitron Mobile service. The 2012 revenue growth was partially offset by a decrease in international equipment sales.

Says Arbitron President and CEO Sean Creamer, "In 2012, we maintained our focus on long-standing objectives: continued growth in our core revenue, improving margins while aggressively investing in the quality of our radio ratings services, and entry into new markets such as digital radio, cross-platform, and mobile. Over the past year, we were able to increase the number of PPM markets that are accredited by the Media Rating Council. Today, 18 PPM markets, including six of the top 10 radio markets, display the Council's coveted doublecheck marks. Also in 2012, we enhanced the radio data that advertisers can use in their marketing mix models. We believe our enhanced data will improve the resulting measures of radio's impact on sales and will help advertisers better appreciate the return on investment that radio can deliver on their marketing dollars. And importantly, we renewed contracts with a number of our top radio group clients, including Cumulus. This contract returned nearly 250 radio stations in more than 50 markets as subscribers to our diary-based radio ratings services."

Jacobs Media Debuts 'Smart Launch'

Lori Lewis

A recent post in Jacobs Media's "JacoBlog" about the launch of "Nash FM" and its difficulty in corralling its social media accounts has led to the debut of a new Jacobs Media service – "Smart Launch." Spearheaded by social media strategist Lori Lewis, the company will offer a 30-day program to ensure that new station debuts go off seamlessly – socially. It will be available to broadcasters launching new stations as well as to those defending against a debut from another station in the market. Says Lewis, "I am excited to be able to work with companies to make sure that everything’s in place socially on Day One. I’ll then personally work with a station’s social accounts to welcome fans, connect with new listeners, handle competitive threats, and take full advantage of the social sphere." Jacobs Media President Fred Jacobs notes, "Radio pays a lot of attention to the meat and potatoes of a launch – testing the music, production, sales support, and marketing. But too often, the all-important social assets are on a back-burner or not accounted for at all. Smart Launch will give new stations an important advantage." Broadcasters interested in Smart Launch can contact Paul Jacobs at Jacobs Media for more information.

Benztown Launches Syndicated 'Round Trip Country'

Becca

Benztown Radio Networks is launching a new syndicated Country show -- "Round Trip Country" -- a two-hour weekly program that "re-visits Country music in the 1990's" hosted by Becca, the midday host at WKDF-FM, Nashville, and the co-host of television's "The Country Vibe with Chuck and Becca." The new "Round Trip Country" debuts in five markets. Says Becca, "The engines are revving and we're excited for Round Trip Country to take off. It's a thrill to be able to take our listeners back to some of Country Music's best days, the 90's, where larger-than-life country superstars like George Strait, Reba McEntire, Clint Black and Brooks & Dunn moved Country Music and Country Radio in a new direction, creating some of Country's greatest music. It's a really fun, novel, and high-energy concept for a radio show -- and now, 20 years later, it's an idea whose time has come!"
